Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Defense shines as Mustangs blank Tigerscots 38-0 Ponies drop final game to Weston By Rick Paullus Two fum bles returned for touchdowns in the final m inutes o f the fourth quarter broke a 12-12 tie and led to the Heppner Lady Cards compete at Dufur Tournament By Marie Key Mustang offense tries to move the ball up the field By Rick Paullus S enior Jode Coil picked off four passes and the rest o f the H eppner Mustangs defense allowed less than 100 total yards as they shut-out the visiting Weston-McEwen Tigerscots 38-0 on Friday, Oct 22 in Columbia Basin Conference play The Mustangs, 4 and 0 in the CBC and 4 and 3 overall, will be at Culver on Friday, Oct. 29 in a key CBC gam e against a to u g h Bulldog team that piled up 412 yards rushing against Stanfield last week The M ustangs stopped the Tigerscots on their first drive taking over at their own 17-yard line after forcing a punt. Tyler Boyer ran for 16 yards on first down, Matt Kenny ran twice for 12 yards, Boyer tw ice more for nine and Matthew VanCleave for one and a first dow n B oyer broke free for 20 yards, but a holding penalty brought the ball back to the 43-yard line. Boyer then broke a tackle, bounced outside and took off down the sideline for a touchdown The two-point conversion failed, but the M ustangs held a 6-0 lead midway through the first quarter The defense again stopped the Tigerscots with the Mustangs taking over on downs at their own 36-yard line and went back to work Boyer ran four times for 14 yards and taking a screen pass nine yards, Kenny ran tw ice for 18 yards and caught a pass from VanCleave for a four-yard gain, but co n se c u tiv e holding penalties killed the drive and the Tigerscots took over at their own 26-yard line early in the second quarter Coil then picked off a long pass and brought it back 25 yards to the Heppner 45-yard line. The M ustangs were unable to move the ball and had to punt, but held the Tigerscots, taking over at the Weston- McEwen 48-yard line. Boyer ran for seven, Kenny for two and VanCleave for four yards and a first down at the 35- yard line F ran cisco Escalante ran for two, Boyer for three and an offside penalty took it to the twenty- five Boyer ran twice for seven, Kenny for one and on fourth down, Kenny took it three yards to the 14-yard line. VanCleave then hit Brandon Seitz in the end zone for a touchdown and after the tw o -p o in t c o n v ersio n failed, the Mustangs held a 12-0 lead late in the second quarter. Coil picked off his second pass w ith seven seconds left and the Mustangs held onto their 12- 0 lead at the half, despite having eight penalties for 72 yards. The Mustangs took the second half kick off back to the 21 -yard line and went to work with Kenny running twice for 24 yards. Boyer ran for three, a holding penalty on the Tigerscots took the ball to the Weston-McEwen 4 1 -yard line, Kenny ran twice for nine yards and a face mask penalty took it to thetwenty-seve'n. Kenny ran four times for 12 yards to set up a 15-yard touchdow n pass from VanCleave to Seitz to give the Mustangs an 18-0 lead with 7:56 left in the third quarter The Tigerscots took over at their own twenty-one after the kick off, but Coil picked off his third pass at the 37-yard line and a personal foul penalty took it to the twenty-one Another personal foul penalty against the Tigerscots took it to the eleven, but the M ustangs couldn’t move the ball and had a fourth down at the seventeen, where Coil took a reverse h a n d -o ff from Boyer for the touchdown. Matt McCabe went for 15 yards, Quinn Peck hit Aaron Delveaux for a 27- yard gain, McCabe ran for 13 yards and after an offsides penalty, Peck took it in from the one for the touchdown. Coil picked off his fourth pass and returned it 35 yards to the twelve where Justin Delveaux ran for six, then Escalante ran twice, the last one from two yards, to the end zone to make it 38-0 The team s traded possessions before Bailey picked o ff a pass and returned it to the Weston- McEwen 47-yard line Caleb M aben ran for three, Brendan McElligott for six, Bailey for eight, McCabe for eight more and Maben ran twice for 19 yards to run out the clock The defense was led by Coil with 23 defensive points with Aaron Delveaux and Kory Paullus adding 15 points each Casey Maben had 13 points, Rory K ilkenny had 12 points, Kenny had 10 points and Bailey had eight points Boyer ran 13 times for 105 yards, all but three in the first half.
