Keith Brudevold taste the tempting delights at the Oktoberfest Cake Contest held Oct. 9 in Heppner. Nineteen cakes were entered into the Oktoberfest C ake C o n test held on Saturday, Oct 9 "All the cakes were delicious," said Nancy Gochnauer, contest organizer The cake auction was not held during the festivities, however, cakes are available for purchase by contacting G ochnauer at 676-5481 W inners received gift certificates with first place receiving $ 100, second $75 and third $50. Contest winners were: 1st- Willow C reek T e rrac e ’s Black Forest Cake, 2nd- Kandy B o y d ’s C ho co late Mayonnaise Cake and 3rd- Jamie McCormack’s Queen of Hearts Crown Cake R ecipes for the winning cakes follow: Black Forest Cake- 1“ place: Ingredients 1 cup sugar, 6 eggs, at room tem perature, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, V 2 cup all purpose flour, V 2 cup baking cocoa, V 2 cup melted butter, V a cup sugar, 2 tablespoons Kirsch or cherry Brandy, 1/ 3 cup water, 2 cups whipping cream, whipped, 1/3 cup confectioners’ sugar, V 2 cup Kirsch or cherry Brandy, 1 21-ounce can cherry pie filling. Maraschino cherries and chocolate curls. Directions: Preheat over to 350 degrees Cream 1 cup sugar, eggs and vanilla in mixer bowl for 10 minutes or until light and fluffy. Sift flour and cocoa into creamed mixture; mix gently. Sir in butter Pour into three lightly greased 8-inch round cake pans. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes or until layers test done Cool in pans for five minutes. Remove to wire racks to cool completely. Place layers on three plates. C h o c o l a t e M a y o n n a ise C a k e - 2 nd place: Ingredients 2 cups sifted all-purpose flour, 2/3 cup unsw eetened cocoa powder, 1 Vi teaspoon baking soda, V a teaspoon baking powder, 3 large eggs, 1-2/3 cups sugar, 1 teaspoon vanilla e x tra c t, 1 cup reduced-calorie mayonnaise, 1-1/3 cup cold water; For the ch o co late frosting: 12 ounces semisweet chocolate chips, 1 cup reduced-fat sour cream, Vz teaspoon vanilla extract and 2 squares (one ounce each) sem isw eet chocolate, melted D irections: 1) Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Butter and flour two 9-inch round cake pans, line the bottom s with wax paper. Onto a piece o f wax paper, sift the flour, cocoa, baking soda and baking powder 2) In a large bowl, with an electric mixer on high, beat the eggs, sugar and vanilla for 3 minutes or until fluffy.
