Ron Palmer as new owners, will give a pair of spurs for first place in bull riding. Severe Bros, of Pendleton is giving a set of bareback rigging for first place in b areback riding. F irst place bulldogger will receive a silver buckle from Cornett Green Feed, and first place w inner in saddle bronc riding will receive a pair of chaps from Heppner Auto Sales, Inc. Twenty-five dollars in cash will go to the winner of the girls’ barrel racing from Murrays Rexall Drug, and Jim Farley o f Farley Motor Co. will give a trophy to the winner of the flag race. Herman Green will present a trophy buckle to the winner of the Wranglers cow riding, and Mr. and Mrs. Wes Sherman of The Gazette-Times will give a trophy buckle to the winner of the novice bronc riding, new event this year. Most of the trophies are now on display in the window of Gardner’s Men’s Wear. Purses for the rodeo, as announced by John Venard, secretary, are as follo w s: S addle bronc riding, $250; calf roping, $ 100; bull riding, $ 175; cow milking, $100; bulldogging, $100; bareback riding, $175; w ild horse race, $100; OBRA girls’ barrel racing, $100; M orrow C ounty registered quarter horse race, $100; M orrow C ounty derby, 3/4 mile, $100; team roping, $100; quarter-mile open race, $50; flag race, $100; other races $235. In addition, there will be a $50 donated prize for novice bronc riding. Mini Carnival to provide fun for all Adopt a Teacher will be having a mini carnival again this year. Come join in on the fun on August 18 at lp.m. Come and have fun and su p p o rt the local teachers at the same time. Last year fun was had by all. Morrow County 4-H Helps Build Character Raising children to becom e d ecen t and re sp o n sib le a d u lts is a com plex and challenging jo b th a t is becom ing increasingly difficult in our society. To be a person of good character, youth must develop strengths of the 4 “H ’s” : head - they must know what is good; heart - they must desire to do the good; hands - they must be w illing to do good; and health - they must develop a lifestyle that supports the desire and willingness to do good. The Morrow County 4-H program striv es to develop good character in 4- H members. Qualities that define good character have been debated by various groups but in 1992, the Josephson Institute of Ethics with the help o f scholars, parents, youth workers, and others p u b lish ed the A spen D ecla ra tio n . This Declaration has become the cornerstone for the character d ev elo p m en t ed u catio n p ro g ram s in the U nited States. The A spen Declaration states: HEPPNER HEATING, INC. 1. The next generation will be the stewards of the world. 2. The w ell being o f society needs citizens with good character. 3. P eople do not automatically develop good moral character. Children must be taught so that they develop the values and a b ilitie s n ecessary fo r m oral d ecisio n m aking and conduct. 4. Character education is based on core ethical valu es - p illa rs o f character development - trustworthiness, respect for others, responsibility, fairn ess, carin g , and citizenship. 5. A lth o u g h c h arac te r education is first and foremost an obligation o f faith com m unities, the com m unity in general, schools, and youth and family serving organizations are also responsible. 7. Youth have a b e tte r chance of learning moral values if all groups work together to teach and reinforce moral values. 8. Every adult must take responsibility to model and teach the pillars of character development.
