V*V»*v* mm imes VOL. 123 NO. 33 8 Pages Wednesday, August 18, 2004 J* * Morrow County, Heppner, Oregon MC Fair & OTPR Queen Lexi Kennedy Hailing as the first queen from Riverside High School, Q ueen Lexi Kennedy, 18, is this year’s 2004 Morrow County Fair and Oregon Trail Pro Rodeo Court queen. Kennedy has also served as a princess in 2003 and a pennant bearer in 2002. K ennedy is no stranger to the fair and rodeo as her grandfather was team roper Larrie Knaggs. She has also showed lambs for 4-H. Kennedy has had her 15-year-old quarter horse sorrel mare, Jacki, for three years and is glad to have her along for the ride. K ennedy said she has ridden horses all her life and recen tly has been working with Jacki in roping and breakaway. Kennedy has greatly enjoyed her reign as queen, en joying m eeting new people at several different fairs, rodeos and festivals. One great honor she received was riding in the te le v ise d Rose Parade. “Knowing I was on TV was really fun,” said Kennedy. K ennedy has also enjoyed spending time with her court. K ennedy knew B ergstrom and Anderson from last year’s tour and has enjoyed getting to know Wainwright, who she’d heard a lot about. Kennedy graduated this year from Riverside High School and is preparing to go to Eastern Oregon University to pursue a degree in early elementary education. “I love little kids. They are so fu n ,” said Kennedy. She hopes to one day teach kindergarten or first grade. She was also active in the Youth Alive program and the Fellowship o f Christian Athletes. In her free tim e, Kennedy also enjoys fishing and cam ping and ju s t recently learned that she enjoys miniature golf. “We had a chance to go mini golfing after riding in the Joseph parade and I found out that it was a lot of fun,” said Kennedy. K ennedy is the d au g h ter o f K evin and Tracie Kennedy and Tami Kennedy, all o f Boardman. Her sister, Amanda, is 14 and has been a pennant bearer for the past two years. “I really would like to say how m uch I appreciate my parents and the other court families for all they have done for us over the years,” expressed K ennedy. “ I am also a p p reciativ e of the overw helm ing response from our sponsors. ALL NEWS AND ADVERTISEMENT DEADLINE: MONDAYS AT 5:00 P.M. 1 and Eve Ironhawk register a p lone School District approves $84,000 agreement with MCURD The lone one School Board, at its regular meeting Monday night, unanimously approved an intergovernmental agreement with the Morrow County Unified Recreation D istrict for funding o f athletic programs and other extracurricular activities at lone Schools. According to the agreement, the school district will receive a sum not to exceed $84,000 from MCURD for the 2004-05 year. M CURD Board member Del LaRue, lone, told the board that the district is to bill MCURD for actual costs incurred in running the ISD athletic programs. However, he said that the M orrow County School D istrict had previously asked for more money than they actually incurred, which resulted in 3 “$ 175,000 carryover of our money (for MCSD),” said LaRue. “We were generous to Morrow County this year and we may not be next year,” he added. He also told ISD that, contrary to rumors, M CURD has not yet decided how much money they will disburse to lone next year. “We all know that you’re operating on a bare bones budget,” said LaRue. “ I’ve made that real clear.” Also at the meeting, Joel Peterson was appointed as a new board member, replacing Debbie Radie, w ho m oved out o f the district, and was sworn in by board Chair Joe Rietmann. Joe Rietmann was reappointed board chair and Gregg Rietmann, vice-chair. Newly-hired su p erin ten d en t Bryn Browning attended her first m eeting as adm inistrator and presen ted her adm inistrative report as follows; -student registration will be held on Monday, Aug. 23, facilitated by Cathy McCabe, Tara Proudfoot and Browning. Bliss, TX with several other local soldiers. There they arc receiving training before being deployed to Iraq.
