The lone American Legion Auxiliary members teamed up with the lone K- 4 grade stu d en ts for a coloring display along with the distribution of poppies leading up to the annual Memorial Day Celebration. Auxiliary members also donated American flag puzzles to the children for learn in g ab o u t the geography of America. The Memorial Day celebration will be at the American Legion Hall in lo n e at 10:30 a.m . on Monday, May 31. The grant will be used by the lo n e School D istric t to provide partial funding for a music teacher. The music program at lone was a victim of budget cuts in 2003. The lone Education Foundation plans to provide a similar grant to the lone School each year. In addition to the Tier One Grant, the lone Education Foundation has Heppner Elementary School students, family members and friends gathered Thursday, m ade all dues co llected May 20 to enjoy food, auction fun and a book fair at the HES Spring Fling. These grants are available for teacher/student learning projects. Tier Two Grants have been used to partially fund field trips, learn in g m aterials and teacher workshops. The lone Education Foundation has also applied for and received a matching grant from the Wild Horse Foundation in the amount of $7,500. The grant will be used to fund the construction o f a green house for the benefit of the lone School and community. The lone Education Foundation has agreed to match the $7,500 providing a total of $ 15,000 for the project. They sang a variety of songs, including their new Concert Etiquette rap. A sales deadline of June l has been established for the current phase of brick installation scheduled for this summer. The Foundation plans to continue sales after June l for installation at a later date. The foundation is funded from generous individuals and b u sin esses in terested in continuing the legacy of e x ce lle n ce o f the lone School. Baccalaureate ceremonies to be held B a c c a la u re a te cerem o n ies honoring Heppner and lone seniors will be held this coming week. The H eppner cerem o n y w ill be held Tuesday, June 1, at 7 p.m. at St. P a tric k ’s C ath o lic Church in Heppner. The lone ceremony will be held W ednesday, June 2, at 7 p.m. at Valby Lutheran Church in lone. Murray awarded $500 scholarship The K nights o f Columbus, Council 1673, has aw ard ed a $500 scholarship to Heppner High School senior Luke Murray, son of John and Ann Murray. Murray is a 4.0 GPA student and president of the National Honor Society for this year. He has also been active in football, basketball, baseball, St. Patrick’s Youth Group and altar serving. He plans to attend Willamette University or the University of Portland. Proceeds from the P endleton R oundup fu n d raiser w ere used to provide the scholarship. “We are g ra te fu l to the com m unity and the Roundup for their support,” said Dennis Hull, Knights of Columbus Grand Knight. “W ithout them . this scholarship would not be possible.” Over 120 Catholic men from Milton-Freewater, Athena, Mission, Pendleton, Pilot Rock, Heppner and lone p arish es belong to Council 1673 of the Knights of Columbus. Along with 1.6 m illio n m em bers worldwide, their mission is to p rovide p ro g ram s to enhance y o u th , fam ily, com m unity, ch u rch and council life.
