The Mustangs improved to 21 and 3 on the year and advanced to the second-round to play at Regis on Saturday, F e b . 28 fo r th e r ig h t to a d v a n c e to th e s ta te cham pionships in Pendleton. T h e M u s ta n g s b e a t th e defending cham pion and top- ranked Regis 51 -50 in the first gam e o f the season for both teams on Dec. 5 at the Santiam Christian Tournament. Brian Sm ith got the M ustangs on the board first w ith a rebound basket as the team s traded baskets m ost o f the first quarter. E lguezabal tied the gam e to open the second, the E ag les sc o re d to go back ahead, then Seitz hit a long jum per and Elguezabal scored o ff a pass from G us Torres to give the M ustangs an 18-16 lead. A fter the E agles tied it again, Aaron Griffith scored off a pass from Elguezabal, Torres scored o ff a steal, Elguezabal hit a ru n n in g ju m p e r and B otefuhr scored o f f a pass from Torres to m ake it 26-18. A f te r a n E a g le b a s k e t, Elguezabal hit one o f two free throws to give the Mustangs a 27-20 lead at the half. T h e E a g le s s c o re d tw ice to open the third, but Seitz scored four straight to push th em b ack to 31-24. A fter four straight from the E a g le s , E lg u e z a b a l h it a running jum per, Torres fed M urray and Seitz for lay-ins and M urray scored o ff a drive to m ake it 39-28. The Eagles scored to end the third with the M ustangs leading 39-30. The Eagles scored to open the fourth, but M urray and E lguezabal scored o ff drives to m ake it 43-32. After a Joseph score, Seitz hit a ru n n in g ju m p e r, th e n the Eagles scored again; M urray scored o ff a pass from Torres and hit one o f two free throws, Seitz hit three o f four free th r o w s a n d E lg u e z a b a l com pleted a three-point play to m ake it 54-36 w ith 2:32 left. M urray scored o ff a drive to make it 56-38 with 1:12 left and Zach Skaggs hit one o f two free throw s and the Eagles hit tw o 3-pointers late to m ake the final 57-44. Murray added 11 points and four rebounds, Torres had five assists and four steals, Smith had six rebounds and three blocked shots and Botefuhr had three assists and two steals. T h e M ustangs, 21 and 4 on the year, battled the Ram s for three plus quarters, but w ent cold in the fourth, were forced to foul and the Ram s made 12 o f 13 free throws in the fourth to pull away for the win. The game marked the final g a m e in a M u sta n g u niform for se n io rs Luke M urray, C huy E lguezabal, B ria n S m ith , B ria n Haguewood, K yler Lovgren, Aaron Griffith, Justin Botefuhr. S e itz o p e n e d th e game by hitting a short jum per but the Ram s w ent on a 6-1 run to take a 6-3 lead. Seitz s c o re d o f f a p a s s fro m Elguezabal and Botefuhr hit a lo n g ju m p e r to g iv e th e M ustangs a 7-6 lead and after again, but the Rams scored to end the third with a 43-41 lead. Regis scored first to open the fourth. Sm ith hit a short jumper, the Rams scored four straight and after Seitz hit two free throws, they pushed their lead to 54-45. Elguezabal got a steal and lay-in, the Rams hit two free throws and Torres scored o ff a drive to m ake it 56-49. A fter tw o m ore free throws, Torres hit one o f two with 2:20 left to m ake it 58- 50 but the Rams hit six o f six in the next m inute to put the g a m e aw ay . H a g u e w o o d scored inside o ff a pass from Torres for the M ustangs last points o f the year with about a minute left. Seitz had 13 points and tw o blocked shots with Torres adding 10 points, two a s s is ts a n d tw o s te a ls . Elguezabal had a good all- around game with eight points, s e v e n a s s is ts a n d s e v e n rebounds. Sm ith had nine rebounds, M urray had four rebounds and two assists and Botefuhr had four rebounds. Regis scored eight straight until Seitz scored o ff a pass from E lguezabal to end the first quarter trailing 19-13. After a Ram basket to open the second, Torres hit a 3-pointer, but Regis pushed their lead to 24-16, but back c a m e th e M u sta n g s w ith M urray hitting a ju m p er and Torres feeding Seitz for a lay- in. A Ram 3-pointer m ade it 27-20, but S kaggs scored three straight lay-ins on passes from Elguezabal, Lovgren and M urray, then M urray scored o ff a rebound and Torres got a steal and a lay-in to make it 30-27. Regis tied it at the half at 30-30 on a late 3-pointer after a scram ble for a loose ball. The Rams opened the third w ith a basket to take the lead, but E lguezabal hit a 3- pointer and Seitz made one of two free throws to make it 34- 32. After the Rams tied it again, E lg u e z a b a l hit a long 3- poionter only to see the Rams com e back to take a 39-37 lead. To be listed, a student m ust carry at least 12 credits and achieve a T h e lo n e L a d y grade point average o f 3.5 (4.0 scale) or above, w hich is C ardinals lost to the C rane equivalent to the letter grade “A.” M ustangs, 35-40, in the first round o f state playoffs on Feb. 28 at lone. The Lady C ardinals’ offense struggled from the beginning o f the gam e, but their defense kept Crane from the basket until the final few minutes o f the fourth quarter. T h e f ir s t q u a r te r ended with lone behind one p o in t, 7-8. In the seco n d quarter, lone scored eight points to Crane's seven points. The third quarter ended with lone in the lead, 25-23. In the fourth quarter the Lady Cards had 10 points, and Crane had 18 points.
