The Cardinals fought hard, but couldn’t overcom e the 9 to 15 lead the H onkers had at the end o f the first quarter. The Heppner Mustang J V boys won their second close gam e in less than a week over the Grant Union Prospectors o f John Day; this tim e it took overtim e as they w on 49-43 on M onday, Dec. 29. With the win, the M ustangs improved to 7 and 1 on the year. The M ustangs took a 9-3 lead after one, getting five points from M att Kenny, and still led 17-14 at the half. They got eight points from Matthew Van Cleave and four from Kory Paullus as they took a seem ingly safe 31 -22 lead after three quarters. Mustang girls fall to Prospectors again By Rick Paullus For the second time in six days, the Heppner M ustang girls varsity lost a close game to the Grant Union Prospectors, this time by a score o f 56-52, on Monday, Dec. 29, in Heppner. The M ustangs fell to 3 and 7 on the year. They will get back into Columbia Basin Conference play on Friday, Jan. 16, hosting the Umatilla Vikings. The M ustangs got off"to a good start, taking a 19-16 led after a fast-paced first quarter. Heppner got six points froifi * Susan Southw orth, three each from Stefanie H anson and Shanna Rietmann, and a three-pointer from Katie Britt. Hanson and Southworth each scored four points and M adison Bailey scored five, including a three-pointer, as the M ustangs took a 34-29 lead at the half. The third quarter proved to be the undoing for the M ustangs as they w ere outscored 17-6 as the Prospectors took a 46-40 lead after three quarters. Bailey had five points, including another three-pointer, and Rietmann scored four, but it w asn’t enough as the Prospectors held on for the win. Southworth led the M ustangs with 12 points and five rebounds, with Bailey adding 10 points, nine steals and four rebounds. H anson had nine points, nine rebounds and tw o assists. Rietmann had nine points and nine rebounds. Chelsea Britt had six rebounds and tw o assists. Brooke Rust had six rebounds. The M ustangs hurt them selves by hitting only five o f 17 free throws.
