Clean up begun, need permanent solution To the Editor: We w o u ld lik e to express our appreciation to everyone involved in the clean up o f the C ity C orporation Yard. Viewed from our front row seats, w e can see a big im p r o v e m e n t in th e appearance o f this property. K u d o s to R a n d y Rayburn for the long hours and hard work he is putting into this project. It is a pleasure to watch his skillful handling o f die cat. He was very considerate when he voiced his concern for us, about all the dust he was stirring up. W hat’s a little dust when we can see the positive results. T h e P u b lic W orks Director stopped by to apprise us o f the progress o f the clean up. We appreciate that he did that. H e g reeted m e w ith: “ Hello, you ornery old cuss”, or words to that effect. 1 guess 1 am an o rn e ry o ld c u ss, because I’d still like to see som e type o f barrier placed betw een NW Sperry and the City C orporation Yard. F ru to s ’ driver’s license was suspended for six m onths and he was sentenced to 18 m onths o f supervised probation, with 30 d a y s in ja il, 80 h o u rs o f c o m m u n ity s e r v ic e a n d paym ent o f $914 in fines and fees. Friday evening, Aug. 29, at the lo n e C ity Park Amphitheater, Brian Hanson and the Badland Patrol will be returning to perform at 6:30 p.m. Last year the group was so w e ll lik e d th e y w e re requested to return. Leader Brian Hanson plays fiddle like you wouldn’t believe. He also plays guitar and sings. H anson and the B a d la n d P a tro l p e rfo rm m o s tly in R e d m o n d a n d Prineville but have played their country m usic at Mr. B ’s in Portland. H anson has also performed in Pendleton when Births Syd ni M arie Pointer- a daughter, Sydni Marie, was bom Friday, Aug. 8, to Eric and Vikki Pointer o f Sublimity. A re c ita tio n o f the rosary w as held A ug. 13. A fim eral m ass w as held A ug. 14, w ith burial at R iverside Cem etery in Boardman. S c h m id t w as b o rn A ug. 28, 1928, at Sw alw ell, Alberta, Canada, to David and Bertha Lang Schmidt. He attended schools in C anada and then w ent on to th e U n i v e r s i ty o f W a s h in g to n to s tu d y engineering. H e w orked on the Space N eedle in Seattle. Schm idt w as a self- em p lo y ed perso n in m any professions. H e w a s an a v id baseball fan, enjoyed playing p o o l, p la y in g th e o rg a n , traveling, fishing, his roses, planes and cars. He w as a m em ber o f the Eagles Lodge. O n Feb. 2 6 ,1 9 9 6 , he m arried G loria I. O rjuela at Reno, NV. H e loved being w ith his family. A t the age o f 9, Burkenbine’s family m oved to Heppner, so that his father could establish his own m a rk e t, H e p p n e r M ark et. Burkenbine began learning the trade and in his teens, he and his father pioneered one o f the first cold storage lockers in Oregon. B urkenbine attended H e p p n e r s c h o o ls and graduated from Heppner High School. Deciding to not follow after his father, B urkenbine p u r s u e d an i n te r e s t in m echanics and w orked at the Ford and Chevrolet garages in H eppner. He becam e a shop m anager for R oice Fulleton. He studied for every General M otors test offered in the area and receiv ed g rades o f 98 percent or higher. H e then w ent on to attend classes at G eneral M o to rs’ school in Tigard. He held their certificate o f “ C e rtifie d A u to m o tiv e Technician.” B urkenbine w as also an avid hunter and fisherm an and w as a m em b e r o f the National Rifle Association. He was also a lifetime m em ber o f the H eppner Elks Lodge 358 and a member o f the Episcopal Church. After joining the Civil A ir Patrol during W orld War I I, B u r k e n b in e b e c a m e in terested in airplanes. He spent m any hours helping to build the L exington A irport and built his ow n hanger to house his personal planes. O n June 11,1942, he m arried C hristina Brassfield, from Palco, KS. T he couple h a d fo u r c h ild r e n , C h ris Burkenbine, Lynn Burkenbine Schm orl, A nne B urkenbine B ro u sse a u and Jay Burkenbine. F ro m 1963 u n til 1981, B u rk e n b in e an d his fam ily lived in Portland. In 1 9 8 1 , th e y r e tu r n e d to Heppner.
