The Willow Creek Water Park in Heppner will be open on Mondays starting June 23, thanks to some area businesses and organizations. The H eppner Elks C lub and M urrays D rug donated funds for the pool to be open one Monday, the Odd Fellows donated two Mondays and the Bank o f Eastern Oregon donated the month of July. The pool will be open those days for free community swims from 1-5 p.m. Regular pool hours are Tuesdays through Fridays, 1-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m.; and Saturday and Sunday from 1- 5 p.m. Season passes are available for sale at $70 for individuals and $125 for families. Home school students hold awards and graduation night ä Meaghan Unruh The EXCEL home school group held its awards and g rad u atio n night on M onday, Ju n e 2, at the C h ristian Life C en ter in Heppner. Eighteen students from six families participated. The families included Bill and Nancy Jepsen o f Heppner, Andrew and CJ Johnson o f Heppner, Gabe and Becky Owen of Lexington, Dick and Karen Temple o f Lexington, Loren and Kathryn Unruh of Heppner, and Tim and Myma Van Cleave o f Heppner. Many o f the students did presentations for the audience including harp, trumpet, and flute solos, and vocal ensembles. Awards were presented to the students by their parents. These were given for character qualities, completed grade levels, and outstanding achievements. Meaghan Unruh was presented with a high school diploma by her parents, Loren and Kathryn Unruh. Meaghan has completed 13 years o f hom e s c h o o lin g , and graduated with a grade point average o f 4.0. She was nam ed a N atio n al M erit S cholarship C om m ended Student, and was awarded the Dean’s Academic Scholarship Gold Level for $2,500 per year at Oregon Institute o f Technology where she plans to study nursing. In addition, she has been awarded $300 from the Pioneer Memorial Hospital Foundation Earl and Hazel Wilson Memorial Scholarship, $150 from the M orrow County 4-H Leaders Council, $150 from the A m erican Legion Auxiliary, Heppner Unit, and $200 from the South Morrow County Emergency M ed ical T ech n ician s Association. The second session will be held July 29-Aug. 8. The half-hour classes will be held Tuesdays through Fridays from 9 a.m. until noon. Arts and crafts group plans meeting, workshops The Morrow County Creative Arts and Crafts group will have a lull agenda for their June 26 1 p.m. meeting at GD ’s banquet room. The trip schedule to the Oregon Garden, Lincoln city, Bandon and Sisters will be a v a ila b le w ith co sts included. Planning for the fair theme board at the Morrow County Fair will be discussed and works of art in the patriotic theme will be discussed. Topping the list will be Sandra Haynes who will show samples o f flowers, people and animals done in color pencil and pencil. She will also speak on layering color pencil. And will have a list of supplies needed for her Sept. 6 and 7 pencil workshop. Anyone interested in pencil art is invited to attend. Haynes will have a workshop on scratch board art coming up on November 15- 16. S cratch b oard art is considered one of the lost arts. “To have someone in this area able to teach this is a great experience for all to watch,” said Betty Mills o f MCCAC. H ay n es w ill g iv e a demonstration and will tell what supplies are needed for the workshop. Anyone interested in these arts is invited to attend. Call Judy Laughlin to reserve a space for the workshops. High school art students are welcome to attend.
