New secretary will finish out fair season Besäte Äetaell U of ü Ne»spaiar Library Eumene, OR 97403 A new fair secretary, Renee Yocom, was hired at the July l Fair Board meeting. Yocom will betaking over the position vacated by LaRae Kindle earlier this summer. Yocom was h i r e d tem p o rarily and her position will b e Renee Yocom reassessed in September. Yocom has been involved in fair activities for the past six years as a fair committee member and the superintendent of the Jr. and Superkids departments, along with other responsibilities. Her new position will put her in charge of organizing the premium book, scheduling food vendors, overseeing the placem ent o f inside and outside exhibits and helping with the open horse show. New food vendors this year include a M exican-style vendor, one who supplies buffalo meat, and possibly, a seafood vendor. “I hope everyone will come out and see the fair and discover the centennial spirit out here this year,” said Yocom. The 2002 Bank o f Eastern Oregon Jr. Golf program was a huge success this year, with over 40 youngsters completing lessons, said C raig H olland, instructor. The kids then showed off their skills in a tournament on July 27 at Willow Creek Country Club. Results were as follows: Girls: six-year-olds— Emily Holland, first place; Emily Rea, second place. Eight-year- olds— Cassi Day, first place; C arrie H aguew ood, second place. Local players will participate in the 50th annual Shrine football game P rep aratio n s are finalized and details are ironed out for the 50,h annual Shrine East- West football game to be held at Bulldog Stadium in Baker City on Saturday, August 10. Pre-game activities start at 6 p.m. and kick off is at 7 p.m. TTtree Heppner players have been selected to participate in the game. Stefan Matheny Mi chael McCabe was selected to play as well but can not because of an injury. Approximately 150 high schools participate in this activity, producing 120 graduate seniors for the August game. Each team will consist of a thirty-man player squad and a thirty man alternate squad, each of which is comprised o f 14 from the 3A schools, 12 from 2A schools and 4 from 1A schools. T his year B rice Gundlach of Vale High School will be the head coach for the East team and Greg Grant o f Heppner High School and Dale Holland of lone High School will assist him. Laric Cook of Alsea High School will head the West team, assisted by Kirk Miller of Regis High School in Salem and Tim Dodson o f Suislaw High School. In honor o f the 50 years of support to the Shrine Hospitals o f N orth A m erica, the organization is extending an in v itatio n to any previous p a rticip a n t to com e and be recognized. If anyone was or knows o f a past player, coach, queen or official, they are invited to come and be a part o f the weekend. Free physicals at lone High School lone Schools remind parents that they will be offering free physical exam inations to all middle/high school students on Thursday, Aug. 8 beginning at 6 p.m. There will not be another date offered for free physicals. Students unable to get a physical examination on that date must arrangements with a physician to have a physical before he or she p a rticip a te s in any school athletics. Students receiving a physical on Aug. 8 must have physical exam form filled out and signed by a parent or guardian in order to receive a physical at the school. Because o f the actions of an alert Heppner merchant, a pickup with a mobile methamphetamine lab was stopped in Heppner near Green Feed and Seed by Heppner Sheriff s deputies, resulting in the arrest o f the occupants of the pickup. On A ug. 3, using some inform ation from a poster provided by the Oregon State P olice, a local m erchant recognized that the purchase of some chemicals was unusual and that they could be used for the illeg al m an u factu re of methamphetamine. A description provided by the merchant lead sheriff s deputies to the occupants o f the pickup, which was seen leaving the store. Upon further investigation, deputies discovered other items and chemicals used in the m an u factu re of methamphetamine in the pickup. Cary Grove, 42, o f Siletz was arrested and charged with P ossession of P recursor Substance with the Intent to M anufacture a C on tro lled Substance, a class B felony. Also taken into custody on a Failure to Appear warrant out of Corvallis was Noah Bird, 19, also from Siletz. Grove was lodged at the Umatilla County Jail, while Bird was cited and released on instructions from the Corvallis Police Dept. MCGG buys Lexington Polaris The M orrow C ounty G rain G row ers has purchased Lexington Polaris from Scott Dougherty, and will be moving the shop and sales to the former tire bay at the MCGG store in L exington, M CGG general m anager John R ipple has announced. Ripple says the co-op will be opening the new facility in mid- August. “We are excited about the opportunity and look forward to serving everyone,” says Ripple. He added that the co-op will have a Polaris display at the Morrow County Fair next week, and urged everyone to stop by. Boosters take Deschutes River raft adventure trip (1-r): Sage Canyon River guide Bo, IHS senior Mike Radie, Chad Robie of Heppner, and lone graduates: Kari Morgan, Korey Morgan, Mark McEUigott and Jake McEUigott. Sixty-one lone boosters and friends had the adventure o f a lifetime when they gathered at Maupin for a one-day raft trip dow n the D eschutes River. Cardinal Booster Club President Debbie Radie who had the idea for a club m oney-m aker organized the trip. Bob Krein of Sage Canyon River Company worked with Radie to keep costs down, and offered a kick-back to the club for every trip sold. The day included tackling a series of C lass III and IV rapids, a barbecue chicken and steak lunch, bodysurfing and sliding, and spectacular views of the high- desert rock form ations. Professional guides on the rafts kept the six-hour day action- packed and fun for all, said a spokesperson. The trip was so popular club m em bers are already planning an outing for the summer of 2003. K rein offers day trip s, overnight rafting packages, and an a n g le r’s dream float. Anyone wishing to schedule a float trip may contact Krein at 1- 840-538-R A FT or www. sagecany onr i verco. com. lone man’s son going to Oregon Hall of Fame Wally Backman Wally Backman, son of lone resident Sam Backman, will be inducted into the Oregon Baseball hall of fame August 10, an honor he earned playing 14 years in the majors, including a World Series championship with the New York Mets. Backman was a first round draft pick of the Mets straight out of Aloha High School in Beaverton in 1977. He played in the minor leagues several years before joining the Mets in 1981. He played on the 1986 w orld champion Mets, batting .333 in the series. In 1990 he joined the Pittsburg Pirates, then in '91 and '92 played for the Philadelphia Philly's before ending his season with the Seattle Mariners in 1993. He is now a manager with the Chicago White Sox Birmingham AL farm club. The O regon Hall o f Fame induction will take place at the Tiger Woods building on the Nike campus at Beaverton. Final Concert in the Park is Friday B rian H anson and the Badland Patrol will perform on Friday, Aug. 9, starting at 6:30 p.m . at the lone C ity Park am phitheater. L eader Brian Hanson playing fiddle heads the free, three-hour concert; he also plays guitar and sings. Brian Hanson and the Badland Patrol performs mostly in Redmond and Prineville but have also played their country music at Mr. B's in Portland. H anson has also performed in Pendleton with the group known as Cross Country. Many popular country songs will be heard at the evening performance. This is the last of the Summer Concerts in the Park series, which have been held in south Morrow County, sponsored by the Willow Brian Hanson Valley Service Club and funded by the Morrow County Unified Recreation District. Everyone is invited to attend and enjoy an evening of music.
