The Mustangs’ record dropped to 6 and 3 in the pre-season with their first Columbia Basin Con ference games at Condon on Sat urday, April 13, for an important doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. The Mustangs took a 2-0 lead early as Stefan Matheny led off the game with a triple and Kelly Paullus follow ed up w ith a homerun to left field. The Eagles scored an un earned run in the bottom half of the first, but the Mustangs re sponded with four more in the second. Josh Winters walked and came around to score as Travis Bellamy doubled off the fence in left centerfield. Luke Murray had an rbi single, Matheny was hit by a pitch and both runners moved over on a Paullus sacrifice bunt. McCabe followed up with a two- rbi single to make it 6-1. The Eagles came back with six runs in the third and three more in the fourth to take a 10-6 lead, but the Mustangs came back with two in the fifth as Brad Adams tripled and W inters walked and stole second. Adams scored as Murray reached on an error and W inters scored as Matheny reached on another er ror. The Mustangs regained the lead in the sixth as McCabe hit a long homerun to left centerfield. Billy Gates walked and went to third on Brad Adams’ double. Winters had an rbi ground-out and Bellamy had an rbi single. The Eagles came back to tie in the bottom half, but the Mus tangs responded with a run in the top of the seventh as Paullus tri pled and scored on G ates’ ground-out. The lead was short lived though, as the Eagles came back with two runs in the bottom half to get the win. Paullus went two for four with a triple and a homerun, Bellamy was two for four with two rbi’s, Matheny was two for four with a triple, McCabe went two for five with a homerun and three rbi’s, and Brad Adams went two for five with a double and a triple. HR: Heppner-Paullus, McCabe. lone tennis teams win three over Condon Adam Neiffer lone tennis teams traveled to Arlington on Thursday, April 4, to battle against the Honkers. The lone boys split with Arlington with Adam Neiffer posting a 6-0, 6-3 win against Kevin Brandt. Jeff Hunt and Brian Bunch teamed up and were defeated by Bud Drummond and Jakub Sotak, 3-6, 3-6. In girls’ action, Caitlin Orem had a m atch which lasted approximately two and a half hours. Orem lost the first set, 3- 6, against hard-hitting Anna Durka, lobbed over her opponent to take the second set to win, 6- 2, but lost the third set 3-6. Sara Peck lost to Michelle Barry 1-8. Macarena Esposito posted the only win for the lone women, defeating Jenny Smith, 8-1. Tyler Raible lone tennis teams played against Condon on Friday, April 5. lone posted three wins and Condon walked away with two wins. C aitlin Orem defeated Breanna Anderson in a close fought match, 9-7. Tyler Raible was pitted against Tessa Nichols- en, taking his match into a tie breaker. Raible lost the match. 8-9. with a tiebreaker score o f 5- 7. Johnny Collin and Paul Ne iffer lost to Tessa Nicholsen and Breanna Anderson, 2-8. Billy Ross and Taylor McElligott de feated Kaila Kilgore and Katie Humphrey, 8-2. Meghan Mc Cabe and Sara Peck defeated Alex Hardie and Jessica Hill, 8- 3. By Rick Paullus Senior catcher Jesse Gutierrez had the game-winning hit twice to lead the Heppner Mustang softball team past the visiting Wahtonka Eagles in an exciting doubleheader to open EOL play. G utierrez singled home Genia Grant from second base in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Mustangs a come-from-behind 6-5 win in the first game. The Mustangs spot ted the Eagles an 11-0 lead in the top of the first inning in the sec ond game, but rallied to win in the bottom of the eighth, 17-14, on a Gutierrez three-run homerun to centerfield. The Mustangs improved to 3 and 6 on the year as Jesse Kempas picked up two complete game wins from the mound. The Mustangs will play at Culver on Saturday, April 13. Gutierrez doubled in the sec ond inning of game one and came around to score on a bases-load- ed walk by Jenny Whalen to give the Mustangs a 1 -0 lead they held until the top of the fourth, when the Eagles scored three runs. The Mustangs added anoth er run in the fifth when Nikki Sisk doubled and scored on a Kempas single, but the Eagles came back with two more in the sixth to take a 5-2 lead. In the bottom of the sixth, Marcy Miller singled, Whalen walked, Sisk had an rbi single and Kempas drove in two more with a single to tie the game at 5-5. In the bottom of the seventh, Grant walked, went to second on a throwing error on a pick-off at tempt and came around to score the winning run on Gutierrez’s single. Kempas was two for three with three rbi’s, Sisk was two for three, scored two runs w ith a dou ble and an rbi, Gutierrez went two for three with a double and an rbi and Miller went two for two. After the Mustangs spotted the Eagles the 11 -0 lead in the second game, they came back with five of their own in the bot tom of the first as Rachel Howard single. Grant singled, Gutierrez had an rbi single and stole sec ond, which allowed Grant to score. Alecia Geer walked. Mill er had a two-rbi single, Blake Allstott reached on a fielder’s choice, Kassie Gaines walked and Sisk had an rbi single. The Mustangs added two more in the fourth when Kempas and Howard singled, G rant reached on a fielder’s choice and Gutierrez had a two-rbi double off the field in left centerfield. The Mustangs came all the way back in the fifth as Allstott doubled, Gaines and Sisk reached on errors, Kempas had a sacrifice fly and Howard was hit by a pitch. Grant had a two-rbi single, Gutierrez had an rbi single, Geer had a sacrifice fly and Gutierrez scored as Miller reached on an error to give the Mustangs a 13- 11 lead. The Eagles tied the game up with two runs in the top of the sixth but the Mustangs came back with a run in the bottom half as Grant brought home Gaines with an rbi single. The Eagles scored a run in the top of the seventh to tie it at 14-14 and send the game into extra innings. With one out in the bottom of the eighth, Howard was hit by a pitch for the third straight time. G rant walked and G utierrez blasted a line drive over the fence for the win. Gutierrez ended up going five for five with six rbi's for the game. Grant went two for five with three rbi’s and Miller went two for five with two rbi's. The Mustangs led 3-0 after one as Kelly Paullus singled, stole second, went to third on a M ichael McCabe single and scored as Billy Gates grounded out. Brad Adams followed with a two-out two-run homerun to left field. They extended their lead to 6-0 after two when Josh Winters walked, Travis Bellamy singled and Stefan Matheny had an rbi double. Paullus had an rbi bunt single and McCabe had an rbi single. The Pioneer scored single runs in the fourth and fifth, but the Mustangs came back with three more in the bottom of the fifth. Gates reached on an error. Brad Adams and Winters walked, Bellamy scored two with a sin gle and Brian Gutierrez had a sac rifice fly to make it 9-2. The Pioneers came back with three runs in the sixth, but the Mustangs held on for the win. Donald Adams went four in nings to pick up the win, striking out four, giving up two hits, no earned runs and no walks. Gates pitched a perfect seventh, strik ing out two. Bellamy went two for three with two rbi’s, Paullus went two for three and scored twice, while McCabe went two for four with an rbi. Brad Adams had a homerun and two rbi’s. Leading the Cardinals was Natalie McElligott who finished first in all of her events. She won the high jump with a jump of 4- 10. She also won the long jump with a jump of 14-11 and the tri ple jump with a jump of 32-7. Diana McElligott took first in the 100m dash with a time of 12.73. She also placed first in the 200m dash with a time of 27.23. Cyndi Heagy took first in the 400M dash with a time of 1:10.00. She also placed second in the 200m with a time of 30.09. Brittany Day finished second in the 100m hurdles with a time of 19.57. She also placed fifth in the long jump with a jump of 12-2. Kim Morris placed second in the 800m run with a time of 3:30. She also fin ished fifth in the high jump with a jum p o f 4-4. Amelia Peck placed second in the 300m hur dles with a time of 55.22. She also placed fifth in the javelin with a throw of 85-9 and sixth in the shot put with a throw of 24- 2. Barbara Holland took third in the high jump with a jump of 4- 4. She also finished fifth in the discus with a throw of 54-1. Mis sy Baker placed sixth in the dis cus with a throw of 49-3. The 4x100m relay team of Amelia Peck, Cyndi Heagy, N atalie McElligott and Diana McEllig ott took first with a time of 53.59. The 4x400m relay team of Mor ris, Heagy, Holland and Emily Key placed second with a time of 5:20. The lone Cardinal boys track team placed second at the Condon track meet. Andrew Re- itmann and Brad Burright both won three individual events. Burright placed first in the long jump with a jump of 20-9. He also finished first in the 110m hurdles with a time of 15.07 and first in the 300m hurdles with a time of 42.02. Rietmann took first in the 100m with a time of 10.09. He also took first in the 200m with a time of 23.5 and first in the 400m with a tim e o f 1:02.87. Mike Radie placed sec ond in the 100m with a time of 11.78 and second in the 200m with a time of 24.91. Ashley Rob erts took second in the long jump with a jump of 17-2. He also took third in the javelin with a throw of 121-8 and third in the triple jump with a jump of 34-9. Til Tullis finished second in the pole vault with a height of 7-0. He also placed second in the 110m hur dles with a time of 20.4 and third in the 300 hurdles with a time of 51.06. Cayle Krebs finished sec ond in the discus with a throw of 101-3, third in the 100m with a time of 12.3, third in the shot put with a throw of 36-1, and 6th in the 200m with a time of 26.67. Cody Bergstrom placed 2nd in the 3000m with a time of 12:37 and fifth in the 1500m with a time of 5:30. Tim Doherty finished third in the 400m with a time of 1:13. Karl Morgan placed fourth in the 110m hurdles with a time of 24.17 and sixth in the discus with a throw o f 74-8. The 4x100m relay team of Radie. Ri etmann.
