Due to reduced on-site septic system activity in the winter season and a projected budget shortfall in the state's on-site program, the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) has suspended its on-site septic system advice program The program has been offered the first Tuesday of the month at the Morrow County Planning Department in Imgon. The program has served as a local resource for on-site septic system evaluations, permitting and inspections and has been a means o f providing information about on site applications, constructing new system s or maintaining existing systems. Technical assistance and forms related to on-site septic system regulations, site evaluations, permitting and construction for Morrow County residents may be obtained at the DEQ Pendleton Office at 700 SE Emigrant, Suite 330, Pendleton, OR 97801. On-site applications and fees should also be sent to this address. For more information or assistance, contact the DEQ Pendleton office at (541) 276-4063. In order to keep their on-site system operating properly, owners should remember the "dos and don'ts" o f septic system operation and maintenance, according to a DEQ news release. Low-flow toilets, showerheads and faucets are recommended to conserv e water and extend the system’s life. Leaky toilets and faucets should be repaired Fax or e-mail senator Smith As many people are aware, the Washington, D.C., office o f Senator Gordon Smith has not received any constituent mail for nearly a month because o f anthrax fears. The toilet should not be used as a receptacle for sanitary napkins, diapers, condoms or other non-degradable products. Paint, oil, photo-chemicals, thm ners, yard pesticides or other chemicals should not be poured down the drain or toilet as the on-site system will not properly treat these m aterials, which may interfere with the proper functioning o f the system. Perennials, large plants, bark dust or mulch should not be placed in the drainfield area. Digging or building any structure over the drainfield, including the tank and distribution units, should be avoided The use o f additives, bacteria, enzymes or other chemical products should also be avoided. Irrigating heavily over the septic system is not recommended. Downspouts and other drainage should be kept away from the disposal area. Food scraps should be composted or put in the trash. The use o f a garbage disposal will require additional maintenance of the septic tank. Additionally, the septic tank should be pumped on a regular basis and inspected for system damage or problems A DEQ-ltcensed installer or pumper should be called when there is a problem and required permits need to be obtained.
