Chamber Chatter By Claudia Hughes, Executive Manager "Meetings, meetings, meeting, I’m so tired o f them," commented a Chamber director at the conference last week. It always seems that toward the end of the year, people tend to hold more meetings. These can be very worthwhile if they accomplish their purpose, give everyone the opportunity to speak at least once, stick to the agenda, encourage people to volunteer for assignments to accomplish the tasks at hand and adjourn within a reasonable amount o f time with people eager to spend a few minutes visiting. Some people don't do meetings and some thrive on them. "To thine own self be true." Td like to share the following from "Grow Something Besides Old", entitled 'Time Zones": "At the early long-range planning meeting, I yawned and he said, 'What time is it where you're from?' I said, Two hours earlier than this.' And the thought occurred to me, 'What are we in, then, a time warp? I flew two hours forward and he flew one hour back so we could meet and plan the group's future - and whafs the future anyway but time we're not really in yet. And we both stepped out of the time we were in just to plan it." It's food for thought. Ideally meetings should be attended with passion with the goal to make a positive difference for our community's future. Think of all the great things in Heppner that might not be in existence if not for meetings. It wouldn't be wise to "unmeet" ourselves into non existence. That might be defined as a dying community. A suggestion for all of you tired "meeters": agree to take December off for time to enjoy families, friends and freedoms; then dig in with renewed energy and invite a friend. Put some fun into your meetings. Bring new faces and new ideas for the new year. Next week will be the monthly Chamber luncheon when all entities report, moved to the second Tuesday, during November only. The luncheon will be at John's Other Place. Thought for the week: "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself." -Franklin D.
