T h e B a r n y a r d e r s 4 -H Club By Amy Jepsen, reporter The Barnyarders 4-H swine club recently had a wonderful opportunity when Kelwayne Haguewood donated a young sow to the club. The club members decided to have the pig butchered. The m eat would then be donated to the Heppner Neighborhood Center, St. Patrick's Senior C enter and the Stokes L.anding Senior Center in Imgon. Pat Schwarz donated the butchenng fee and the club paid him to cut and wrap the pig. The hanging weight of the sow carcass was 600 pounds. Some o f the club m em bers were present to see the hog butchered. They learned more about the internal organ parts including the heart, intestinal tract and the reproductive system from club leader Bill Jepsen. Garden Club installs officers The Heppner Garden (Tub installed new officers at its meeting June 4. Shelby Krebs receives Elks Legacy award Shelby Krebs, daughter o f Clint and M aureen Krebs o f lone, was recently aw arded a $1,000 Elks Legacy Scholarship. To be eligible for the Legacy, a student m ust be the child o f an Elk member in good standing. This year, a total o f 352 legacy scholarships were awarded to graduating seniors throughout the country. Seven o f these awards were given to students in Oregon. Shelby's father, Clint, has been an Elk m em ber for 25 years, and grandfather, Henry Krebs, is a life member. She is a graduate of lone High School and is the first student from BPOE Lodge #358 to receive a legacy award. "BPOE Lodge #358 congratulates Shelby on her award," said a spokesperson. Shelby Krebs Teen tournament set in Boardman A FLY (Friday, Life Youth) three-on-three basketball tournam ent for teens enrolled in middle school or high school will be held this Friday, June 8, from 1-5:30 p.m. at Columbia Middle School in Irrigon. Besides basketball, kick boxing, art displays and games will also be available. The cost is free, but teens m ust com plete a FLY registration form. Time to put on your walking shoes and enjoy a day at Boardman's Annual Flea M arket. The flea market, in its seventh year, will be on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, June 9-11 along NE Front Street in Boardman. The fun begins at dawn and lasts until dusk. Local vendors, as well as vendors from Arizona, Washington, California and other parts o f Oregon, will be on hand with a variety o f items to buy. Organizer Judy Scott said that there will be lots o f good buys, including antiques, tools, clothes, food, woodworking, kites, knickknacks and other items. There will be train ndes up and down the flea market for those who enjoy a break from walking. For more information, contact Judy Scott at 481-7606. We Print BUSINESS CAROS Heppner (¡mette- Times Julie Proctor Heppner Girls State delegate Julie Proctor The American Legion Auxiliary Unit #87 announces Julie Proctor as their delegate for Oregon's Girls State. Julie is the 17-year-old daughter of Mike and Kay Proctor of Heppner and is a junior at Heppner High School. She became interested in Girls State while attending "Rural Oregon Day" with the Heppner Cham ber o f Com m erce this past winter. She is active as a member o f the HHS Honor Society, Heppner Chamber o f Commerce high school representative, OSSOM president. Pipeline instructor and STARS instructor. She has been re-elected for a second term as the ASB publicity director. Julie has also participated as a teacher's assistant, dram a student, HHS volleyball player and cheerleader. She is active in the Catholic Youth Group as well as 4-H in sewing, swine and cooking, and was also a 4-H ambassador. Julie's plans to go into public relations and com m unications or elem entary education. The 61 st annual Girls State will be held at W illam ette University June 17-23. The program is designed to increase the awareness and knowledge o f governmental processes and procedures at the city, county and state levels. It is a hands- on experience with role playing and active participation as the primary mode o f learning. There will also be workshops on personal-growth, selecting a college, mock trials and open forums of discussion on current events. This year's sponsor for this scholarship was the American Legion Post #87, Heppner. Lions Club plans picnic The Heppner Lions Club annual picnic and awards presentation will be held Saturday, June 9, at 6 p.m. at the M orrow County Fairgrounds. Cost is $15 for a steak dinner or $12 for a chicken dinner. M embers are asked to bring their choice o f a salad or dessert. The master of cerem onies is Lions Club President Dick Pans. Guest of honor is Carol Tate. The program will also include installation o f officers, new m embers and presentation o f awards. I
