TWELVE - Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, May 16, 2001 Hard hitting Mustangs beat Stanfield 11-1 By Rick Paullus The Heppner Mustang baseball team banged out 14 hits, including four doubles, to beat the visiting Stanfield Tigers, 11-1, on Tuesday, May 8. The win improved the first place Mustangs' record to 11-1 in the Columbia Basin Conference East division and 17-4-1 overall. The Mustangs jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first as Chuy Elguezabal singled, stole second and came home on a Stefan Matheny single. Michael McCabe reached base on a fielder's choice and scored on Billy Gates' double. Brad Adams walked and came home on Travis Bellamy’s two-RBI double. DA's Report The Morrow County District Attorney David C. Allen has released the following information: -John Samuel Williams plead guilty to Interference with Making a Report, a Class A misdemeanor, and Contempt, a misdemeanor He was sentenced to 90 days in jail, suspended on the condition that he successfully complete probation conditions and 18 months bench probation. He was also ordered to have no offensive physical contact with the victim, complete anger management and alcohol treatment programs and pay $934 in fines, fees and assessments with $500 of the fine satisfied by 100 hours of community service. - R o b e rt M a rtin Leinweber plead guilty to Criminal Trespass, a Class A misdemeanor, and was sentenced to 60 days in jail, suspended on the condition that he successfully complete probation conditions and 12 months bench probation. He was also ordered to have no offensive physical contact with the victims, complete a misdemeanor alcohol treatment program and pay $374 in fines, fees and assessments. -Ricky Lee Pennock plead guilty to Assault 4, a Class C felony, and was sentenced to 36 months formal probation. He was also ordered to have no offensive physical contact w-ith the victim, complete a domestic violence treatment program and pay $1059 in fines, fees and assessments. In the third, Kelly Paullus and Brad Adams singled and Bellamy was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Donald Adams brought one home on a squeeze bunt and Luke Murray made it 7-0 with a two-RBI single. In the fourth, Gates singled and came home on a Paullus double. Paullus came around to score on a throwing error The Tigers scored a run in the top of the fifth, but the Mustangs came back to end the game in the bottom half. Kiel Naims singled and went to second on the throw and scored on Matheny's single. Brian Gutierrez then singled home Matheny to make it 11-1 and end the game. Josh Winters pitched four innings of two-hit ball to pick up the w in w ith relief help from Bellamy. Matheny led the w ay at the plate, going three for four with two RBIs. Gates and Paullus each went two for three and scored two runs. Elguezabal went two for three. Bellamy went one for two with two RBIs and Brad Adams, Naims and Gutierrez each went one for one. Merry Brannon will be the manager. Stephanie Clough will be the assistant manager and Manssa McCabe will be charge guard, with other people rounding out the staff. The hours will remain the same with the pool opening on the weekdays from 1-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. and on the weekends from 1 -5 p.m. This year, the pool will be closed on Mondays. Season passes are now available for sale. Individual passes are $65 and family passes are $125. Some payment plans are available. A clean-up day will be held on Saturday, June 2, for anyone interested in helping. Litter pickup set May 22 Volunteers are continuing their effort to remove unsightly litter and vegetation from the state highway rights-of-way through town. The next litter pick up date will be Tuesday , May 22, from 5 to 6 p.m. The alerter notices and SOLV litter bags will be distributed to the residences and businesses along the route on Friday, May 18. Please use the attached SOLV litter bag and deposit it next to your nearest highway sign for collection by Chamber o f Commerce volunteers. Hazardous items should be marked with an orange flag. Contact the pick-up coordinator, John Edmundson, if you need an orange flag. The Lexington Grange has received a set of 10 grapplers through a grant from SOLV. These are in storage at the Lexington Grange hall. Contact Barbara Gilbert Lexington Grange president, 676-9436, to use the grapplers. Nursing home residents enjoy M other’s Day tea Bake sale to benefit camp A bake sale will be held in front of the Heppner Post Office on Friday, May 18, starting at 10 a.m. with loaves of fresh bread, cookies, cakes and other goodies. This event is to help raise funds for Kelly Straley to attend the Baker Diocese Jr. High Camp. Any funds left over will be given to the Diocese of Baker to assist with sending other kids to camp. For the past five years St. Patrick's Catholic Church has contributed the funds to send Straley to camp This year she decided to help pay her own way and help send other lads in the Diocese camp. The camp is held at Camp Whitebranch near Sisters. This year's camp will is June 18- 22 and will have a circus theme. The theme is used to "teach spiritual lessons designed to strengthen faith, provide tools to defend their faith and live it." Lon Straley, Kelly's mother, will be going as camp nurse again this year. Kelly's younger sister. Ten will attend with Lori. Straley will be assisted by Lori and fellow St. Patrick's parishioner Robert Lutcher during the bake sale. r HHS Drama Club presents 'The W izard of OZ' Heppner High School presented the "Wizard of Oz" on Friday, May 4, and Sunday, May 6, at the Heppner Elementary School gym. The play was directed by Lea Mathieu. Cast members included Julie Proctor as Dorothy, Kelly Paullus as the Lion, Nick Anthony as the Scarecrow and Whitney Sherritt as the Tin Man. The cast also included: Courtney Nelson as Auntie Em, Judd Shepherd as Uncle Henry, Ben Turrell as Zeke, Tylynn Smith as Hickory, Tracy Baker as Hunk, Ashley Ward as Miss Gultch, Leland Rill as Professor Marvel, Krista Adams as Glinda, Kelli Bates as the Wicked Witch, Jody Maddem as the Wizard and "Trinket" Bates as Toto. Tami Rietmann was in charge of t-shirt sales. 4-H News The Hill Hoppers 4-H Club By Kelsey Wolff, reporter Glayds Connor (pictured above) celebrated her 93rd birthday with family and friends at the first annual Pioneer Memorial Hospital and Nursing Home Mother's Day tea, sponsored by the PMNH Auxiliary. Nursing home residents and their families enjoyed refreshments and entertainment. Amy Jepsen played the piano and Julie Howard sang. Morrow County Health District Victor Vander Does (also pictured) and his wife Nancy, a member of the auxiliary, helped serve. Organizer Pennie Miller said they hoped to make it an annual affair. Spelling contest planned May 17 The annual Morrow County School District Spelling Contest will be held on Thursday, May 17 at 6:30 p.m., at Columbia Middle School in Irrigon. They put a sealant on it to preserve it and prevent scuff marks from chairs and shoes. It gives it a nice shine and should last at least a year. Over the weekend. Mildred Eubanks was hospitalized for a liver ailment at Kadlec Hospital in Richland. Wash, and passed away. We are so sorry about her passing. Our sympathy to her family. We are happy that Evelyn Wagoner, a recent resident at the center, is recuperating from a close call with pneumonia. Evelyn is an RSVP member and a long-time resident of LaGrande. We also wish a speedy recovery for Archie Padberg who was airlifted to Portland with a heart problem. A healthy recovery to them all. We are all very sorry about Irene Schroeder's passing away. She was a long-time resident of the center and was an asset to the senior center and the community. She was also very helpful and kind to me. "the new kid on the block" from the East Coast. Our sympathy to all of her family. Exercise class was held Tuesday in the morning, with one card table of players with the usual coffee and treats. Bud says, "Dick (you know who you are) got his late 1920s "Model A" on the road, and wishes "Get Well, Lynnea," w ho broke her kneecap. There were 100 diners and take-outs at the Wednesday Mother's Day dinner, with a prayer by Paul Miller. The dinner was served by Dorothy Green, Barbara Ansotegui and Pauline Matheny of Hope and Valby Lutheran churches. We also had a chance to wish and sing "Happy Birthday” to Edith Mathews who is 89 years young. Please put these dates on your calendar or date book: Friday, May 18-the new 19-passenger senior bus will be going to the Capeco open house in Pendleton. The bus wiil leave the center at 9 a.m. If interested, call or get your name on the list at the center office. Ed Baker will be the RSVP driver and Velma Wright, the bus hostess. Lunch plans will be decided en route Thursday, May 24-a bus will be leaving for "bingo lovers" to the arts building in Lexington. The bus will leave at 5 p.m. Refreshments are available there also. Corol Mitchell hopes to have shopping trips via the senior bus to Hermiston and would like to plan a picnic outing in a suitable place or park to relax and go "barefoot in the grass." Exercise class was held on Thursday morning, with a light lunch of turkey soup, salad, combread. pudding and beverage follow ing. The afternoon movie was "Guess Who's Coming To Dinner" with Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn, enjoyed by all. There was only one table of card players on Friday with the coffeepot on and goodies for the players and the "puzzle comer." A lot of residents went out of town for family gatherings for the Mother's Day weekend. Due to illness and vacation trips, the RSVP drivers and office staff are operating on a skeleton crew basis, so please be patient with us as we are doing our best. We hope to improve! The Wednesday, May 16, menu was chicken fettucini with mushrooms, salad, fruit, rolls, cookies and beverage. Graduation gifts that say “WELL DO NE” Engagement Wolff- Logsdon Lindsay Wolff and Brian Logsdon of announce their engagement to be married.. The bride-to-be is the daughter of Thomas and Karen Wolff of Heppner and Nicolette and Ronald Kopp of Condon. She is a senior at Willamette University in Salem, majoring in English. Logsdon is the son of Linda and Ron Zoghbi of Pollock Pines, California, and Andy and Ruth Logsdon of Fremont, California He graduated from Chico State University with a degree in recreation management and is employed with Outward Bound in Portland. A May 27 wedding is planned at the Laney Ranch in Mayville, the home of the bride's grandparents.
