EIGHT - Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, April 25, 2001 Young golfer to travel to Australia Kevin Drake Kevin Drake o f Heppner will be traveling to Australia this summer to represent Oregon on an Oregon g o lf team. He was nominated by the ISSI (International Sports Specialists, Inc.) state coach because o f his accom plishm ents or recognition on either a pre-season or post-season honors list for the state. The Oregon g o lf team will be accom panied by the state coach, Stacy Smith o f Prineville. He will be leaving for Australia on July 8 and returning on July 20. The team will be playing golf for seven days on the Gold Coast o f Australia and one match will be against the Australian team. The tnp also includes sightseeing and three days in Hawaii. The Down Under Games were started in 1986 by George O'Scanlon who took high school football players to Australia to compete. It then grew to include basketball, volleyball, wrestling, ice hockey, cross country, cheerleading and golf. All 50 states are represented. The Down Under Games are sponsored by the Australian government. Kevin, a junior at Heppner High School, is the son o f Doug and Carley Drake o f Heppner.
