TEN - Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, February 28, 2001 Greenfield Grange Efforts made to bridge plans St. Pat's urban/rural divide dinner W CVAL receives grant Greenfield Grange in Boardman will prepare a St. Patrick's dinner at the hall on Friday, March 16, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. The menu will be corned beef and cabbage, a buftet salad, biscuits and dessert for $6, all you can eat. Added features for the evening are dancing in the big hall; the DJ will have a variety o f music. A photographer will also be available to take pictures. Everyone is invited to attend. "Come and enjoy a little bit of the Irish with us,” said a grange spokesperson. For more information, call Edna at 481-6191. The Willow Creek V alley Assisted Living Corporation has received a $12,000 grant from the Meyer Memorial I rust. I he grant monies will be used for signs, marketing and a grandchildren's playground for the facility. Pathfinders help in teddy bear, towel drive Garden Club plans meeting The Heppner Garden Club will meet Monday, March 5, at the St. Patrick's Senior Center at 6:30 p.m. to hear an update on the Morrow County Health District. The new hospital administrator, Victor Vander Does, will be the guest speaker. The Garden Club reminds members that the new meeting time is at 6:30 p.m. The public is invited to attend the meeting. THe Oregon Trail Pathfinder Club participated in the recent Red Cross Teddy Bear/Towel Drive by helping to pick up donated items. Approximately 85 items were picked up and added to the donations brought in by other teams who also helped with the pick up. This is one of several helping and caring activities in which Pathfinders have participated. Others include collecting canned goods for the Neighborhood Center, making cookies for the elderly and making cards for the nursing home residents. Mabel Allen to celebrate 95th 4-H Club News photo by Patty McNary Kim Morris with Nipper A 95th birthday party for Mabel Allen, Boardman, will be held this Sunday, March 4, from 2-5 p.m. at the Riverview Center in Boardman. She requests no gifts, but instead asks those attending to bring a story to share. Allen, who has lived in Morrow County for almost 80 years, still lives independently and recently renewed her driver’s license, says son Gene Allen. Allen also enjoys traveling and drove with her son to Alaska last June and flew to Florida in January. Allen married her husband, Arthur, in Arlington in 1925. He passed away in June of 1989. She was a homemaker and she and her husband owned the Texaco service station in Boardman. She is still the owner and leases the building out. Several years ago Allen was honored by the Morrow County Fair and Oregon Trail Pro Rodeo. Allen has a son, Gene, Boardman, 12 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and one great, great-grandchild. Son, Clayton, died earlier. St. Pat's bottle drive planned The Heppner High School Class of 2001 is planning a can and bottle drive following the St. Patrick's Celebration. The pick-up date will be announced later. The seniors ask that people save their cans and bottles to help benefit the senior class trip to Coeur d' Alene. Spray Rodeo queen tryouts March 31 Tryouts for the May 26-27 Spray rodeo will be Saturday, March 31, at 4 p.m. at the Spray rodeo grounds. Contestants do not have to be local or Wheeler County residents, however, they must be at least 15 years old and never married. The queen will be announced that evening and crowned by 2000 Queen Lacie Frazier at the Rodeo kick-off dance at the Spray School gym beginning at 9 p.m. For further information or an application call 468-2442. "It was recognized that there is a rurai/urban divide and we need to do something about it," White said. She is planning on arranging a visit to Heppner by 12 to 15 people within the next several months. With White is Heppner City Manager Jerry Breazeale who showed her around the city Tuesday. Cargill Community Scholarship Program application is due. March 1: Oregon Student Assistance Commission 2001- 2001 scholarship application is due. Students can apply for up to 12 scholarships on this one application. A three-to-four-page essay on The Proper Use of Credit is required for this scholarship This scholarship is included in the Oregon Student Assistance Commission Scholarship booklet -Ford Scholars Program-the Ford Family Foundation sponsors this program. The application for this scholarship will also be included on the Oregon Student A ssistan ce Com m ission scholarship form. -Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship requires a Grade Point Average of 3.85+, an ACT score o f 28+ or SA E combined a GED score of 325+ along with the ACT or SAT required scores is also eligible to apply. The application for this scholarship will also be included on the Oregon Student Assistance Commission scholarship form. March 1: Oregon PTA offers a Teacher Education Scholarship that needs to be postmarked by March 1, 2001. Residents of Oregon who are going to study for a teaching degree at an Oregon public university or college are eligible to compete for this $500 scholarship. March 5: Oregon Sports Hall of Fame Museum Scholarship is due. This scholarship is awarded to applicants who plan to attend higher education institutions in Oregon March 10: American Legion Auxiliary Department of Oregon Scholarship. A 500-word essay titled "Look to the Future" is required along with the application, form. Forms are available in the counselor's office. March 30: The Oregon Association of Broadcasters offers a $1000 Broadcast Scholarship. Applicants must be Oregon residents accepted for enrollment in a two or four-year public or private college or university who plan to major in one of the following areas: jo u rn a lis m , p ro duction, management or other broadcast- related majors. April 2: Oregon Nurserymen's Foundation offers several scholarships for both senior students in high school and for current college students. Quilting class to get underway A beginning quilting class will start Tuesday, March 6, at 7 p.m. at the Greenfield Grange in Boardman. The class will be held once a month and will cover a variety of patterns and techniques. This class is free to the public. For more information, contact Jane Dean at 481-5223. Local student earns honors Justin Nelson, Lexington, a student at Oregon State University and Linn- Benton Community College, has been inducted into Phi Eta Sigma, a national scholastic honor society which recognizes high academic achievement among university freshmen. Nelson, who maintains a 4.0, was inducted on February 25.
