Craig Scott, also a senior at Heppner High School, was selected as alternate. Knowles, a 6’3", 200 lb. tight end/defensive end, is the son o f Butch and Mary Knowles, Buttercreek. QB/DB, Cascade. lone varsity boys destroy Echo lone Cardinal varsity men totally devoured Echo on Saturday, Feb. 10, handing the Cougars a 54-28 loss. 5 L~ -- The gUme appeared to be a close one, withilone leadingby one point, 17-16, at the end of the first quarter. The Cardinals came out in the second quarter and continued to raise havoc, scoring an additional 22 points and holding Echo to eight additional points, widening the lead to 17 points by the half. Brad Burright was the leading point producer, scoring 10 o f his 18 total points in the second quarter. Burright also captured eight rebounds, delivered one assist and apprehended four steals. Aaron Brown scored 13 points, delivered two assists, captured 13 rebounds and seized two steals from his former teammates. Korey Morgan added 11 points, rendered four assists, captured one rebound and seized two steals for the Cardinals. Cory Bennetto scored six points, handed out three assists, seized eight rebounds and four steals. Zac Fabian added two rockets, launched from three-point territory for a total of six points. Brooks Rea scored four points, dished out one assists, captured two rebounds and snared one steal. Adam Neiffer added four points, delivered one assist, brought down four rebounds, snagged three steals and blocked one Cougar shot attempt. Dustin Haguewood scored two points, handed out two assists, grabbed seven rebounds and nabbed two steals for the Cardinals. Sophomore Karl Morgan also added two points to the lone scoreboard. This was the final game for the six seniors who led the lone team. All seniors added their touch, each scoring in their final game. lone men shot 81 percent at the foul line and 41 percent from the field, lone out-rebounded Echo, 44- 17. By Kick Paullus A 26-6 run in the third quarter broke open a close game and earned the Heppner Mustang varsity boys to a 74-44 win over the visiting Weston-McEwen TigerScots on Fnday, Feb. 9, in a Columbia Basin Conference game. I he win improv ed the second place Mustangs' record to 9 and 2 in the CBC and 14 and 5 overall. The Mustangs jum ped out to a 10-2 lead as Ryan Matteson made three o f four free throws, Blake Knowles hit a three-pointer and two free throws and Craig Scott hit a jumper. The TigerScots came back to get within 10-6. David Piper then hit a short jumper o ff an inbounds pass to give the M ustangs a 12-6 lead after one. Michael McCabe hit a short jumper and Stefan Matheny hit two to give the Mustangs an 18-8 lead, but the TigerScots came back to get within 18-15. Scott scored off a rebound, then Weston-McEwen got to within 20-19 before McCabe converted a three-point play. He then got a steal and a lay-in to make it 25-19. McCabe hit Matteson for a lay-in but the TigerScots narrowed the lead to 27-23 at halftime. Scott made a steal and lay-in, but the TigerScots tied the game at 29-29 early in the third before the Mustangs made their run. Scott hit a baseline jumper. Matheny made a free throw, Knowles scored on a rebound. Matteson hit a three- pointer, McCabe fed Knowles for a lay-in and Matteson hit another three to make it 42-29. The TigerScots scored four straight points, but Matheny came back with a three-pointer and the W heeler Falcons, on Friday, February Feb. 9, throwing up the shots but the ball did not want to fall in the lone bucket. To add pain to misery, Wheeler played one of their best games the entire season to defeat lone, 43-26. Amellia Peck led the lone scoring with 11 points. Peck also apprehended five rebounds, handed out one assist and seized one Falcon possession. Again, lone had a difficult time getting their shots to fall. The game was pretty physical and resulted injunior Salli McElligott colliding with Echo's largest player, causing her to get a concussion in the third quarter. Amellia Peck led the lone team with eight points. Peck captured one rebound, four steals and delivered two assists. Salli McElligott added six points and one rebound before her untimely Lady Cards lose to Wheeler lone Cardinal varsity women tried extremely hard to overcome Matteson scored on a nice pass from McCabe to make it 47-33. Matteson hit another three-pointer and scored o ff a rebound and Knowles converted a three-point play with one second left to give the Mustangs a 55-35 lead going into the fourth. Scott got a steal and lay-in and Piper hit two free throws to make it 49-40. The Mustangs then put together another run as Joe Papineau hit a rebound basket, Scott scored o ff a Know les' steal, McCabe fed Papineau fora lay-in and Matteson hit a three-pointer to make it 68-40. McCabe hit a spinning jum p shot from the middle o f the key, Brian Rust hit two free throws and Chuy Elguezabal made a lay-in as the Mustangs took the lopsided win. Matteson led the Mustangs with 21 points, hitting six o f seven shots in the second half and pulled down five rebounds. Scott hit six o f nine shots for 12 points, had four steals, four rebounds and two assists. Knowles had 12 points and six rebounds. McCabe hit four of seven shots for nine points, five assists and four steals. Matheny had eight points and three assists. Papineau pulled down seven rebounds. The Mustangs hit 12 o f 15 free throws for the game. scored four points, brought down four rebounds, grabbed two steals and delivered one assist. Salli McElligott added four points and four rebounds to her team's attempt. Kristina Powell scored four points, captured five rebounds and one steal. Cyndi Heagy added three points, snared six rebounds and one steal. Blake Knowles starts his drive to the basket. fC* team boys win again By Rick Paullus For the third time this year, the Heppner Mustang 'C' team boys beat the Umatilla Vikings in a close game, coming from behind to win 50-44 in Umatilla on Tuesday, Feb. 6. The win kept the Mustangs undefeated at 9 and 0 on the year. Conor Kilkenny scored four points and Aaron Griffith hit a three- pointer in the first quarter, but the Mustangs trailed 9-7 after one. Kiel N aim s scored three points in the second but the Mustangs fell behind, 21-17, at halftime. Josh Winters scored five points,' Brian Smith, four, Justin Botefur hit four o f four free throws and Griffith hit another three-pointer to help the Mustangs to a 36-32 lead a total o f three points and graBbed two rebounds. Johnny Collin scored two points and apprehended one rebound. Curtis Thompson scored two points and captured five rebounds. Jeff Hunt added two points and seized one rebound Paul Neiffer scored two points, captured eight rebounds, delivered two assists and seized one steal Mike Radie contributed two points and apprehended six rebounds. Aiding the lone team on the boards were Til Tullis with three rebounds and Tim Doherty with one rebound. Coach Jim Swanson was pleased with the level o f play his team displayed. Mustang ?C? team boys beat Cardinals By Kick Paullus The Heppner Mustang boys' "C" team stayed unbeaten by defeating the visiting lone Cardinals, 56-48, on Monday, Feb. 12. running their record to 10-0 on the year. Josh Winters scored five points and Aaron Griffith hit a three-pointer in the first as the M ustangs took a 15-10 lead after one. Griffith scored five and Zack Skaggs, four, in the second, as the Mustangs took a 28-21 lead at halftime. lone rallied in the third, getting to within 40-36 after three, despite Winters scoring seven points in the quarter, lone took a 41 -40 lead on a Bnan Gutierrez three-pointer with five minutes left in the fourth. Doug Orwick hit a free throw to tie and Kyler Lovgren hit a jumper and a free throw to give the Mustangs a 44-41 lead with 3:48 left. The Cardinals scored to get The lone "C" team took on the Heppner M ustangs on Monday evening, Feb. 12. Heppner outscored lone, 56-49. Aaron Tworek was on fire, dumping in 16 points for lone. Tworek connected with four buckets from the three-point territory. Tworek also captured three rebounds, delivered one assist and seized five steals. Winters hit a three-pointer with 2:00 left and Skaggs scored on a nice pass from Griffith to put the game away. The Eagles added 19 points to their score and lone men had a difficult time getting their shots to fall. Aaron Tworek led the lone score with nine points. Tworek also grabbed one rebound and seized six steals. Brian Gutierrez aided Tworek with nine points and was also one of the leaders on the boards, capturing 12 rebounds for his team. Gutierrez also delivered three assists and apprehended six steals. Cayle Krebs scored six points, led the team with 13 rebounds and handed out two assists. Cody Bergstrom connected with a missile launched from the three-point territory for after three quarters. Doug Orwick converted a three-point play as the Mustangs held on in the fourth to take the win. The Mustangs hit 20 o f 35 free throws for the game, with Botefur hitting six o f eight. Griffith led the Mustangs with eight points, followed by Kilkenny and Smith with seven points each. Mike Radie had an outstanding night, throwing in 10 points, one from the three-point range. Radie also apprehended five rebounds, delivered two assists and seized two steals. Brian Gutierrez scored nine points, one ball connecting for a three-pomt shot. Gutierrez was also responsible for four rebounds, two assists and four steals. Paul Neiffer added five points, captured eight rebounds, handed out two assists and gabbed three steals. Cayle Krebs scored four points, apprehended eight rebounds, delivered three assists and robbed three Mustang possessions. Jeff Hunt scored four points and was the leader on the boards with nine rebounds. Also helping out on the boards were the following-Til Tullis with four rebounds, Derek Campbell with two rebounds, Cody Bergstrom with one rebound and Johnny Collin with two rebounds. Collin also made one free throw to aid his team on the scoreboard. The Cardinals shot 35 percent from the field and 50 percent from the free throw line. Coach Jim Swanson commented, "We lost this game with some silly turnovers and fouls. They went to the line 33 times to our 12. This was a game we could have won and it was a good feeling knowing that.”
