The boys won, 62-61, but one assist. Aaron Brown By Molly Rhea Heppner varsity girls started out the season with a great weekend of basketball at the Colton tourney, December 1 and 2, pulling out a close one over Catlin Gabel, 49-44, in Friday's tournament opener, then dropping the championship game on Saturday to Colton, 33-38. “I was very pleased with the way the girls played, especially Friday night,” commented Coach Dana Reid. “It was one of the strongest season openers for Heppner I've seen in several years.” Shelley Rietmann led the Mustangs against the Catlin Gable Eagles with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Lacey Matteson added 11 points and dished out six assists, Brett Barber snagged 11 boards and four steals, while Jenni Patton added nine points and eight rebounds to the team effort. The Mustangs fell just short in Saturday's championship game against Colton. The Mustangs got into foul trouble early, resulting in starters Rietmann and Barber sitting much of the first half. Leading by three at the break, Colton quickly increased the margin to 10 early in the second half. The Mustangs jumped back into the fray to pull within five points by the end of the third quarter, but were unable to gain the lead. Fouls were the Mustangs undoing. The Vikings walked the plank to the charity stripe 31 times, and, although they were able to convert only 14 of those shots, they spelled the difference the girls lost, 49-38. at the final buzzer. Fouled out - Matteson, Barber Mustangs take easy victory over lone By Molly Rhea The Mustangs kicked out of the bird cage early in their December 5 match up with the Cardinals, and loped to an easy victory over lone. Heppner increased the lead to 10 at the break and continued relentless defense throughout the third quarter. With six minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, lone pulled within four points, 34-30. Heppner coach Dana Reid called a time out to encourage the Mustangs to rear up and dump the Cardinals, scoring 18 points to lone’s 14, clinching the win. The Mustangs maintained their composure throughout the contest, making the win appear to be in the bag. The difference again came down to free throws. 'C team boys lose to Vikings lone's "C" team boys hosted Umatilla on Monday, Dec. 4. The Cardinals lost to the Vikings, 59- 25. The Cardinal men had a tough quarter at the beginning and Umatilla had a 26-5 lead by the end of the first quarter. The lone squad came out in the second quarter relaxed and, instead of throwing in the towel, worked extremely hard on their game and had some fun along the way. Mike Radie scored six points and captured seven rebounds. Paul Neiffer contributed seven points and heisted three steals. Derek Campbell had an excellent night on the boards, bringing down nine rebounds. Brian Gutierrez did an outstanding job playing point guard and added four points, nabbed five rebounds and delivered two assists. lone Cardinals were four-for- nine at the foul line and 10 for 38 from the floor, which included one three-pointer launched by Aaron Tworek that hit the target in the first quarter. Coach Jim Swanson was pleased with the attitude and hard work that his team displayed during their game. "Everyone had a great amount of playing time and gave 100 percent," he said. Lady Cardinals defeated The lone Lady Cardinals were not as fortunate as their male counterparts on Tuesday at they were defeated by Heppner, 49- 38. Allison Halvorsen led the lone troop with 12 points. Halvorsen also added four rebounds and three assists to her arsenal. Diana McElligott added seven points, two rebounds and two assists to the team effort. Cyndi Heagy did an outstanding job for her team by scoring six points, capturing three rebounds and blocking one Mustang shot attempt. Shelby Krebs scored a total of five points, seized three rebounds and delivered two assists. Salli McElligott added four points and issued one assist. Natalie McElligott contributed two points, four rebounds, blocked one shot attempt and handed out two assists. Amellia Peck scored two points, four rebounds and nabbed one Mustang possession for the steal. Ione JV girls lose to Mustangs lone JV teams traveled to Heppner on Thursday, Dec. 7. The lone girls tried hard but were unable to overtake the Mustangs, losing 32-18. Tracy Griffith led lone with nine points, four rebounds and two steals. Caitlin Orem’s lucky number must have been three as she contributed three points, three rebounds and three steals. Jeanette Brantley made two points of free throws in the second and fourth quarters, grabbed four rebounds and three steals. Jennifer Thompson also made two-of-two attempts at the line in the second quarter. Thompson captured two rebounds and two steals. Meghan McCabe added one point off of a free throw in the fourth quarter and captured the most rebounds for lone with seven. Eva Chitty also contributed one point, grabbed two rebounds and three steals in the game. Emily Key and Megan E. McCabe also added to the lone larceny-Key seized three steals and two rebounds, and McCabe had two steals and four rebounds. Heppner outscored lone in the remainder of the game and lone was unable to close the lead. Billy Gates was the lead point producer for lone, hitting one bucket in the second quarter and four three-point shots in the second quarter for a total of 14 points. Gates had an outstanding game, also seizing six rebounds for lone. Karl Morgan displaying his talent, adding eight points, capturing five rebounds and blocking two Mustang shot attempts. Andrew Rietmann scored five points, grabbed seven rebounds, delivered one assist, seized one Mustang possession and blocked one attempt at a Heppner basket. Zac Fabian hit one basket and one three-point shot in the first quarter to score a total of five points. Fabian also grabbed one rebound, delivered two assists and seized one steal. Cayle Krebs scored two points in the third quarter, grabbed four rebounds, one steal and had one monster block on a Mustang point attempt. Brian Gutierrez aided the Cardinals by adding two points to the score, one rebound, and seizing two steals. ’C team boys win first game By Rick Paullus The Heppner Mustang boys’ "C" team hung on to beat the Riverside Pirates, 47-44, in Boardman, on Tuesday, Dec. 5, in their first game of the year. The boys are coached by Jay Papineau. The teams were tied at 8-8 afrer one but the Mustangs got six points from Josh Winters to take a 21-20 lead at halftime. The mustangs increased their lead to 34-31 after three, getting six points from Adam Bergstrom and got five points from Zack Skaggs in the fourth to hang on for the win. Winters led the Mustangs with 12 points, followed by Bergstrom with 10 and Skaggs with seven. Conor Kilkenny and Adam Wight each added four points. The Mustangs will have a rematch with the Pirates on Thursday, Dec. 14, in Heppner, with the girls’ game getting underway at 5 p.m. and the boys' game following. lone Booster Club hosted the third annual lone Basketball Bonanza on Dec. 8-9. Teams that participated in the event besides lone were the Willamina boys, Umatilla boys and girls, Hermiston JV girls, and Elgin boys and girls. The Lady Cardinals lost their first game of the tournament to the Elgin Huskies, 56-51, on Dec. 8. Elgin had a two point lead at the beginning of the second quarter, but lone added 17 points to their score to lead 23-20 at the half. lone came out flat in the third quarter, only scoring an additional six points and the Huskies led by seven points at the beginning of the fourth quarter. The Cardinals retaliated by outscoring Elgin in the fourth quarter, but came up short when the final buzzer sounded. Amellia Peck was the leading point generator with 16 points. Peck captured three rebounds, blocked one shot attempt, seized seven steals and handed out one assist. Cyndi Heagy continues to strengthen her skills-she was the second leading scorer with 13 points and led the team with nine rebounds and robbed the Huskies of two possessions. Allison Halvorsen manufactured two three-point shots and made three- of-four attempts at the line for a total of nine points. Halvorsen also added two rebounds, four steals and four assists to her credentials. Natalie McElligott scored eight points, seized six rebounds, blocked four shot attempts, snatched three steals and handed out one assist. Diana McElligott scored three points, captured four rebounds and one steal. Salli McElligott made two- of-two free throws in the fourth quarter for a total of two points in the game. The Cardinals girls tried hard to avenge their loss from the evening before, but lost a close game to Umatilla, 56-54, on Dec. 9. Umatilla outscored lone in the first half, leading by 10 points at the beginning of the third quarter. lone cut the lead to nine by the end of the third quarter, then really turned up the heat, scoring 21 points in the fourth quarter. Amellia Peck led the team with 18 points, nine rebounds, one blocked shot and two assists. Allison Halvorsen added 12 points, shooting 100 percent from the three-point range. Halvorsen captured three rebounds, blocked one shot and grabbed three steals. Cyndi Heagy contributed eight points, seven rebounds and three steals to the Cardinal endeavor. Natalie McElligott hit two three-point Shots in the fourth quarter and also hit one-of-two attempts from the free throw line for a total of seven points. McElligott also added one rebound, four steals and three assists. Diana McElligott scored four points, captured three rebounds, blocked me shot, rendered three assists id swindled four Umatilla «sessions. Olivia Thompson added three points, two rebounds and three steals. Kristina Powell came back from an ankle injury and contributed two points, six rebounds, one steal and one assist. In the boys' bracket, the Cardinal men defeated the Elgin Huskies, 76-69, in their first game of the tournament on Dec. 8. Elgin retaliated in the fourth quarter and added 23 points to close the lead, but still came short when the final buzzer sounded. Korey Morgan had an exceptional game, leading the Cardinals with 22 points. Morgan also delivered three assists, snatched four rebounds, and apprehended three steals. Aaron Brown added 18 points, three assists, nine rebounds, and blocked two Husky point attempts. Brooks Rea scored nine points, handed out one assist, captured three rebounds, one steal and blocked two shots. Cory Bennetto added eight points, three assists, nine rebounds, two steals and obstructed one shot. Zac Fabian scored two points from the free throw line in the second quarter and seized three rebounds. Karl Morgan and Andrew Rietmann provided one point each from the line in the fourth quarter. The Cardinal win on Friday advanced them to the Championship on Saturday against Umatilla. lone lost to the Vikings, 68-61, in overtime. lone led in the first quarter of the game by two points. Umatilla took over the second quarter to lead lone by two at halfrime with a score of 30-28. Umatilla added an additional 17 points to their score to lead lone by 11 points at the end of the third quarter. lone fired up the court in the fourth quarter adding 25 points to tie the score at 61. Umatilla added seven points in overtime to take the tournament. Senior Brooks Rea was hot from the three-point range. Rea connected with four three-point shots and scored a total o f 17 points for the Cardinals. Rea also dished out five assists and seized eight rebounds. Aaron Brown was also a major point producer for lone with 17 points. Brown dominated the boards with 13 rebounds, handed out thre$, assiste, viking assists, stolc stole thrcc three '^ *^0 p ^ ^ n s and blocked ot£0 Umatilla shot attempt. Brad Burright scored 15 points, delivered four assists and apprehended 12 rebounds, one steal and blocked two shots. Korey Morgan added seven points, four assists, two rebounds and four steals to the Cardinal credentials. Cory Bennetto scored five points, handed out three assists, grabbed two rebounds and two steals. Cardinal 'C' team loses to Heppner The Heppner "C" team boys defeated lone, 41-28, on Monday, Dec. 11. lone had a difficult time getting shots off in the first two quarters, trailing the Mustangs, 20-7, at the half. Although lone outscored Heppner in the third quarter, Heppner turned up the tempo in the fourth quarter to seal the fate of the lone squad. Koby Rea scored 15 points for lone. Rea also dished out two assists and grabbed two steals. Paul Neiffer, an aggressive freshman, added six points, three rebounds and two steals to the Cardinal effort. Aaron Tworek scored four points and captured one rebound. Jeff Hunt added two points in the second quarter and recovered one rebound.
