Heppner varsity girls started
out the season with a great
weekend of basketball at the
Colton tourney, December 1 and
2, pulling out a close one over
Catlin Gabel, 49-44, in Friday's
tournament
opener,
then
dropping the championship game
on Saturday to Colton, 33-38.
“I was very pleased with the
way the girls played, especially
Friday night,” commented Coach
Dana Reid. “It was one of the
strongest season openers for
Heppner I've seen in several
years.”
Shelley Rietmann led the
Mustangs against the Catlin
Gable Eagles with 16 points and
11 rebounds. Lacey Matteson
added 11 points and dished out
six assists, Brett Barber snagged
11 boards and four steals, while
Jenni Patton added nine points
and eight rebounds to the team
effort.
The Mustangs fell just short in
Saturday's championship game
against Colton. The Mustangs
got into foul trouble early,
resulting in starters Rietmann
and Barber sitting much of the
first half.
Leading by three at the break,
Colton quickly increased the
margin to 10 early in the second
half. The Mustangs jumped back
into the fray to pull within five
points by the end of the third
quarter, but were unable to gain
the lead.
Fouls were the Mustangs
undoing. The Vikings walked
the plank to the charity stripe 31
times, and, although they were
able to convert only 14 of those
shots, they spelled the difference the girls lost, 49-38.
