June 1. in the old school gymnasium. Eighty-one different students received certificates for academic contests, activities, or exceptional work in class. Traditionally at Heppner Elementary School, the final awards given are the President's Education Awards Program. This year eight sixth-graders received the President's Award for Outstanding Academic Achievement: Dan Basile. Brianne Jones. Rory Kilkenny, Michael Merrill. Jackie Meyer, Laurie Murray, Krystal Naims, Roy Proctor. To qualify for this award, students must meet high local and national standards. These students maintained at least a 3.5 grade point average for both semesters of fifth grade and the first semester of sixth grade, and scored at least at the 85th percentile rank on at least two different normed tests of reading or math during fifth and sixth g?ade. Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, June 7, 2000 - THREE Daycare shows support for local donors Heppner Daycare has recognized Kim and Bert Houweling of Central Market and Darrel] Raver of the Bank of Eastern Oregon for their support and donations during the St. Patrick’s Celebration. The daycare center's summer hours are now in effect from 6:45 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and they have "a lot of exciting things planned for the summer." according to director Merry Brannon. The center can accept only four children in their infant and toddler program for children six weeks to 2-1/2 years. The four children have their own care giver and each has his own crib for napping. The center has a new soft play area and new equipment is on order for age- appropriate play, says Brannon.
