By Rick Paullus The Heppner Mustang girls varsity hit 24-48 free throws to beat the 10th ranked Pilot Rock Rockets, 55-46, in overtime, on Friday, Jan. 28. The win improved the Mustangs’ CBG record to 4- 2 and their overall record to 11 -7. «"»i The Mustangs fell behind 8-1 early in the first and trailed 12-5 before L acey Matteson hit a free throw then scored to close out the first quarter and cut the lead to 12 - 8 . Amy Papineau scored on a three-point play to cut the lead to 15-12 and Matteson scored on a lay-in while Casey Ingraham hit a jum per to get w ithin 17-16. Ingraham hit a short jumper to tie it and Shelley Rietmann hit a ¡ay- in to give the Mustangs their first lead o f the game at 20-18. Ingraham’s short jumper made it 22-18 but a Rocket bucket at the end of the half made it 22-20 at the break. The H eppner M ustangs outscored the visiting Pilot Rock Rockets, 31 -22, in the second half to pull away for a 62-54 win on Friday, Jan. 28, improving their CBC record to 3-3 and their over all record to 10-8. Blake Knowles got the Mus tangs going with a rebound bas ket and Michael McCabe hit a running jumper to make it 4-2 early. Craig Scott hit a lay-in on a nice pass from McCabe to tie it at 7-7 and Scott hit a rebound bas ket to tie it again at 9-9. Stefan Matheny hit a free throw and a three-pointer to give the Mustangs a 14-13 lead and Ryan Matteson scored at the end of the quarter to give the Mustangs a 16-15 lead. Matteson hit a jumper then two long three-pointers in a row from the same place to give the Mus tangs a 24-19 lead early in the second The Rockets came back to take a 27-25 lead before McCabe scored on a driving lay- in to tie and Matteson hit two free throws to give the Mustangs a 29- 28 lead. Joe Papineau scored for a 31-30 lead but the Rockets hit two free throws for a 32-31 lead at halftime. Matheny scored, then had a lay-in on a nice pass from Matteson for a 35-34 lead in the third. Scott hit back-to-backjump- ers and Knowles scored to give the M ustangs a 41-36 lead. Knowles got a lay-in off a steal and McCabe hit a lay-in to make it 45-40 but the Rockets converted a three point play to cut the lead to 45-43 at the end of the third quarter. McCabe scored on a lay-in off a nice pass *rom Papineau, then returned the favor as the Mus tangs jumped their lead to 49-43 early in the fourth. In Athena on Tuesday, Jan. 25, the TigerScots jumped out to an 18-3 lead after one but the Mus tangs came back, getting four points each from Donald Adams and Kelly Paullus. to cut the lead to 23-15 at halftime. After an even third quarter, the TlgerScots pulled away in the fourth for the win. Adams led the Mustangs with 17 points, 13 in the second half, followed by Paullus with eight. The Mustangs hit just 10-38 free throws for the game. The Rockets led 16-7 after one, on Thursday. Jan. 27. The Mus tangs fought back to get within 46- 41 at the end of the third quarter, but the Rockets pulled away in the fourth to get the win. Adams and Paullus shared high-point honors with 11 points each, followed by Jerry Shank with eight and Doug Orwick with six. Three-pointers: Matteson (2), Matheny t grade girls still undefeated dy Brian Rust The Heppner Middle School seventh grade girls' basketball team improved their record to 5- 0 with wins over Columbia and Pilot Rock this past weekend. The seventh graders have five games, plus the tournament in Umatilla, left to play in their season. The eighth grade girls' basketball team lost both Friday, Jan. 28, to Columbia and Saturday, Jan. 29 to Pilot Rock. The losses put the girls at l-4 on the season with five games left in the regular season plus the tournament which will be held in Heppner on Feb. 19. The junior high girls next play host to Athena-Weston Friday, Feb. 4, and Umatilla at home on Saturday, Feb. 5. ' / /au axs.
