Chamber Chatter By Claudia Hughaa, Chamber Manager This time of the year many activities are requiring attention: Town and Country wrap-up; Chamber dues notices; Chamber goal setting; getting the new year off to a good start; defining Chamber's role in the St. Pat's celebration and in the year-round events that help to enhance Heppner. On a personal level, tax preparation, calving for ranchers, inventory for businesses, family and friends envelope our lives. When it sometimes becomes overwhelming, it often helps to pause a moment and open our eyes to the world around us. Have you ever watched a covey o f quail? About 20 pair visit our yard daily scavenging for seeds, wheat and apple shavings. I first noticed them as they began sneaking through the rails of the fence, following their leader. As I observed more closely, I noticed that there is always a tree percher, elevated above the others observing the group. Maybe he is looking at things from a different perspective, maybe making a plan, maybe elected to warn the others of danger or maybe he's just antisocial. Then there are the fence sitters, not sure whether to take that extra step and get involved or not, a fear of being at ground level. On the ground are the workers or followers, scurrying hither and yon, taking care of business but staying in their comfort zone. The least signal of danger and they all go flying across the field. Then there is the adventurer. He's out there in front, going that extra step, looking around the comer, reaching for that extra grain, flying up to the bird feeder to test the seed, or perhaps he just plain wants more space and likes change. When the snow falls, they all need food, warmth, support and security. Their differences make the covey interesting and all need each other to complete their world. Stop and reflect on nature and people Relax a little. Conflict drains energy. As we move into 2000 le t’s im prove comm unication and understanding, and continue to celebrate and work together in Heppner and the Willow Creek Valley. Our rural area has a history of coming together to survive flood, fire, and other adversity, yet knows how to have fun. The Chamber appreciates all who were a part of Town and Country in large and small ways. If you're lucky enough to call Heppner home, you're lucky enough. Next week is the Chamber monthly discussion forum where all entities are welcome to give a brief report on activities, concerns, key issues, etc. The Chamber meets at noon, upstairs at Kate's on Tuesdays. Help us kick off 2000 with your ideas and energy. 4-H News Pins and Pots and Patterns and Pans By Emily Bergstrom On Friday January 7 club members made a meal for the Matthews.
