EIGHT - Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, January 19, 2000 Heppner High to present ’The Miracle Worker’ HES holds geography bee Heppner High School students will present the play "The Miracle Worker" on Saturday, January 22, at 7 p.m. and again on Sunday, January 23, at 2 p.m. in the high school cafeteria. The award-winning play by William Gibson is based on the early life of Helen Keller, who became blind and deaf as an infant and the struggles of her teacher, Annie Sullivan, to reach her in her silent, dark world. Heading the cast are Codi Rosecrans as Sullivan, Krista Adams as Keller, Mandy Sneddon and Chris Bowman as Keller's parents and I.eland Rill as her half-brother. The cast also includes Tylynn Smith, Molly Turrell, Paula Spicerkuhn, Kelsey Greenup. Jody Maddem, Terry Hendricks, Nicole Sisk and Sally Calvert. Fourteen students earned a chance to compete for the championship as a result of a written test given before Christmas to all students in grades four, five and six. This year the contest was held in the HES gym, with parents, friends and students in those grades invited to observe the contest. Karen Smith-Griffith, fifth grade social studies teacher, read the questions and served as judge. Linda Shaw, reading specialist and TAG coordinator, served as pmer and score keeper. The students qualifying for the contest were: fourth grade-Andre Rauch, Kelsey Wolff: fifth grade-Brendan McElligott: and sixth grade-Dan Basile. Stephanie Burkenbine, Kyle Carlson. Brianne Jones. Sloan Keithley, Rory Kilkenny, Michael Merrill. Jackie Meyer, Roy Proctor, Brenda Victorio, and Gordy Wegwerth. After each student had a chance to answer seven questions, the six students with the most right answers became the finalists. Dan Basile and Roy Proctor each were presented with the same questions to be answered in written form. Proctor won the championship when he was the only . to answer the following question correctly: "Which country in the Caucasus region shares its name with a U. S. state?"* He will next take a written test to determine his Mrs Shaw and Roy Proctor eligibility for the Oregon State Geography Bee later in the spring. The MCGC will begin shoot ing for average scores on Sunday, By Sandi Day The Morrow County Gun Club (MCGC) held their weekly shoot on a warm but breezy Sunday af ternoon at the club in Lexington, with a large number of members in attendance. The winners of the 16 yard event were: first Jeff Cutsforth, Jan. 23 for the next three weeks and then will take shooters’ aver age. rank them and pair them with another shooter. A S10 per person entry fee is required to enter the league with cash prizes and other awards pre sented to the high overall shooter, ladies and junior shooters at the end of the eight week shoot. The group decided to meet the third Thursday of the month at 7 p.m. in the city hall. Plans were made to have a table with the latest smoke detec tor and fire prevention informa tion at the Morrow County Grain Growers appreciation breakfast on Saturday, Feb. 12. The Auxil iary also plans prizes, a member ship drive and a pledge sheet for the fire dept.
