B y R ick Paullus The th ird-ranked H eppner Mustangs used a stingy defense to ruin the W eston-M cEw en Tigerscots' homecoming, beating them 40-6 on Friday, Oct 1 The M ustangs' offense gained over 460 v ards. led by Craig Scott's 108 rushing y ards, and Ryan M atteson's 194 yards passing Michael M cCabe scored three touchdowns for the Mustangs Heppner improved to 5-0 on the year with the Culver Bulldogs coming to town in a key Colum bia Basin Conference matchup on Thursday. Oct. 7. at 7:30 p m for the Mustangs' homecoming game The Mustangs took the open ing kickoff and got a key third down reception from Craig Scott for 11 yards and a first down at m idfield M atteson then hit McCabe on a screen, who broke a tackle at the line of scrimmage, got good downfield blocks from Clint Bellamy and Matt Baker, and raced 49 y ards down the sideline for the touchdow n The pass failed on the conversion attempt and the Mustangs led 6-0 with f * «. . . * ffj* J 'v trj K ri/J 10:06 left in the first quarter The Tigerscots took the kick off and drove down the field be fore Travis Bellamy recovered a fumble for the Mustangs to the Weston-McEwen six yard line Matteson ran for nine yards and Michael Schonbachler picked up three more and a first down Scott then broke outside and rushed for 25 yards to near midfield The Mustangs were forced to punt where the Tigerscots took over at their own 35 y ard line The Mustangs' defense held, forcing a Tigerscot punt, which McCabe returned to the 48 y ard line Stefan Mathcny caught a third down pass good for 32 y ards and a first down at the 17 yard line as the first quarter ended Scott then ran three times to the two yard line where McCabe ran it in for his second touchdown of the game. M atteson passed to Blake Knowles for the two-point con version to increase the Mustangs lead to 14-0 early in the second quarter. The M ustangs' defense held p ho to by Joyce Hughes and. after a quarterback sack by Josh Hill and Clint Bellamy. forced a punt which was downed at their own 15 yard line Scott ran for two. then seven yards and Schonbachler ran for two yards and a first down McCabe then took a screen pass 17 y ards for a first down to the 40 yard line M atteson then hit Matheny for 11 yards and another first down An interception and return gave the Tigerscots the ball at the 25 of Heppner The Tigerscots moved the ball down the field where Nathaniel Lieuallen scored on an eight y ard run The kick failed and. with 2:07 left in the first half. Heppner led 14-6 The Tigerscots fumbled the kickoff w hich Scott recov ered at the 35 yard line o f W eston- McEwen Scott ran for four. McCabe took the pitch on the op tion for three and an offsides pen alty gave the Mustangs a first down After a short run. Matheny made a great catch at the five and ran to the end zone for the touch down The pass failed and the Mustangs led 20-6 early in the third quarter The onside kick failed and the Tigerscots took the ball to the Mustangs 30 before good defen sive plays by Matheny and Clint Bellamy gave Heppner the ball at their own 32 yard line After a short gain by McCabe. Matteson kept the ball on the option, broke a tackle and ran 67 yards for a touchdown Knowles kick was good to give the Heppner a 27-6 lead The Tigerscots took over on their own 23 yard line after the kickoff The Mustangs got a good defensiv e play from Joe Papineau to force a punt vv ith Heppner tak ing over at their own 33 yard line M cCabe ran for three, then M atteson hit Knowles for 34 vards to the 30 Scott ran for 11 and a first down, then two more, and McCabe went for 12 yards to the four McCabe then took it in for this third touchdown of the game The kick was blocked, giv ing the Mustangs a 33-6 lead The Tigerscots took the kick off and drove down to the Mus tang 10 before the defense held and Heppner took ov er on downs After a short gam. Scott took a pitch on a sweep for 12 y ards and a first down Scott then ran for three, then 12 more and another first down Levi Geer picked up three y ards. but the offense stalled and Heppner had to punt the ball back to the Tigerscots Knowles, however, picked off a Tigerscot pass, giv ing the Mus tangs back the ball at their own 41 y ard line Scott broke through the line for 10 yards and McCabe broke one for another 40 yards to the fn e y ard line McCabe picked up three yards, setting up M atteson's bootleg run to the endzone Knowles’ kick was good to make it a 40-6 game. A fter the kickoff, the T igerscots fum bled which M cCabe recovered at the Weston-McEwen 28 yard line.
