Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner Oregon Wednesday, September 15, 1999 - THREE Mustangs romp over Umatilla Mustang JV football team starts^ off on right foot, beats Eagles By Rick Paullus The Heppner M ustangs JV football team started their season off on the right foot by beating the visiting Wahtonka Eagles. 24-8 on Monday. Sept 13 The Eagles fumbled on their first play to give the Mustangs good field position at the 30 Nick Anthony got the Mustangs on the board with a nine y ard run around end on a broken play Donald Adams ran in the two-point con version to give Heppner an early 8-0 lead The Mustangs defense held and got the ball back on a bad snap to the punter Brad Adams ran 25 yards to the six where Kelly Paullus took it in for the Mustangs second touchdown Brad Adams ran in the PAT and the Mustangs safe; Sophomore running back Michael McCabe sprints for TD By Rick Paullus The Heppner Mustangs trav eled to Umatilla on Fridas. Sept 10 and rolled over the Vikings. 49- 0. in just under three quarters of play The game was stopped with 57 seconds left in the third quar ter due to the 45-point mercy rule The win moved the Mustangs' record to 2-0 with another class 3A team, the Baker Bulldogs, coming to Heppner this Friday. Sept 17 The Mustangs' defense set the tone for the game, holding the Vi kings to a net minus six yards rush ing and just 127 yards passing Heppner had four interceptions, three by Craig Scott in the sec ond quarter alone, to stifle the Vi kings. Heppner took over on its own 39 following a 15 y ard return of the opening kick-off by Michael McCabe Scott ran for four yards and Levi Geer took a sweep for 10 Michael Schonbachler ran for six and McCabe four and a first down After a couple of short runs. Scott made some nice moves to break free for a 33 yard touch down Blake Knowles kicked the extra point to give the Mustangs an early 7-0 lead Each team failed to move the ball and the Mustangs took over at mid-field after the Vikings' sec ond punt Schonbachler ran for five yards and Ry an Matteson kept the ball for nine yards and a first down Schonbachler broke free for 20 more and a first down at the 17 of Umatilla McCabe ran for five yards, then three more On fourth down, he took it in from nine y ards out. with the help of a great block by Stefan Matheny. for the touchdown The kick was no good and the Mustangs held a 13- 0 lead at the end of the first quar ter. The Mustangs' defense held and. after Knowles tackled the punter on a bad snap for a 22 y ard loss, the Mustangs took over on the 18 yard line of the Vikings On second down. Matteson hit Joe Papineau for a 15 y ard touchdown pass Knowles' kick was good to give the Mustangs a 20-0 lead early in the second quarter The Vikings failed to move the ball, but intercepted a pass to take over at the Mustangs' 40 yard line Umatilla then mounted its only serious scoring threat, but was thw arted by the first o f Scott's interceptions at the seven yard line McCabe broke free for 21 yards to give the Mustangs some breathing room On third and nine from the 30. Matteson kept the ball on the option and made a nice cut to run 70 y ards for the touchdown Knowles' kick was perfect to give the Mustangs a 27-0 lead with 5:28 left in the first half Scott got his second intercep tion on the Vikings' next posses sion and returned it 35 yards to the M ustangs' 37 yard line Schonbachler gained 11 yards. Scott seven more and an offsides penalty gave Heppner a first down on the Vikings' 41 The Mustangs then tumbled the ball aw ay, but Scott picked off his third pass to give Heppner the ball at their own 20 McCabe picked up 17 yards on the option and M atteson hit Papineau for 20 yards to the 43 of Umatilla Matteson then hit Scott for 28 vards to the 15 Knowles then made a nice catch over the defensive back in the back of the end zone for the touchdow n Matheny then hit Schonbachler for the two-point conversion to give the Mustangs a 35-0 lead at halftime The Mustangs' defense held and took over on downs at the 33 of the Vikings Schonbachler ran for 12 yards and Brad Adams ran for four y ards and a first down A penalty and an eight yard run by Adams took the ball to the two A pass interference penalty gave the Mustangs a first and goal at the one. but they couldn't get the ball in the end zone and Umatilla took over on downs Matheny then picked off a pass and raced 30 y ards for the touch down The two-point conversion pass failed and the Mustangs took a 41-0 lead with 5:55 left in the third quarter The Mustangs' defense again held and took over at the Vikings" 34 y ard line Adams ran tw ice for nine y ards and a pass interference penalty gave the Mustangs a first down at the 13. Adams then ran for nine and on fourth down picked up a yard for a first Kelly Paullus picked up two y ards to the one before senior Jake Roy scored his first career rushing touchdown on a one y ard run Nick Anthony hit Jerry Shank for the PAT to give the Mustangs the 49- 0 win. The game was called fol lowing the kick-off Stefan Matheny led the defen sive with 23 points, including the interception for touchdown Craig Scott used his three picks to get 20 defensive points Clint Bellamy had 11 and Michael McCabe and Kelly Paullus each had eight Mitch Matthews had seven and a fumble recovery Ry an Matteson led the offense w ith 79 yards rushing and a touch down and completed six of sev en passes for 100 yards and two touchdowns Scott rushed six times for 65 y ards.
