No one need ever be bored in Heppner. The Oregon Barrel Racing Association will be running barrels September 19 and the state finals will be October 8-9. These events are just the beginning of many uses for the Wilkinson Building, which will bring visitors to Heppner. Call the Rodeo Committee for further information. Add hunters, football games, the Booster Club Steak Feed and Auction, the school carnival and the Hardman Oyster Feed and we move quickly through October. November with Thanksgiving and Christmas will be right around the comer. The annual Artifactory is scheduled for November 20 and the Stroll Heppner and Light Parade is Thursday, December 2. Remember to check Channel 3 as you plan for your personal calendar of events and keep in mind the recommendation by many churches to keep Wednesdays free for family and/or religions activities. The Chamber of Commerce endorsed and supported the idea at their last meeting. Everyone needs balance in their lives and "time to breathe." This will be possible if we all work together. It's not too early to think about participating in the Heppner light parade... trucks, tractors, trailers, warm bodies all qualify as long as they are lit (with lights). As I remember a walking Christmas tree received an award last year. Out of town entries are more than welcome. Challenge friends and organizations to join in the friendly competition. Wouldn't an ice skating rink top off the evening. Hold that thought as future plans are pulled together for the use of our old pool. If you dream it, it can happen. Look out 2000-here we come. Thought for the week: "We can't take credit for our talents; it's how we use them that counts." Madeleine L'Engle Pool renovation meeting rescheduled A meeting concerning possible renovation of the former Hepp ner swimming pool site has been rescheduled Anyone interested in participat ing in the project is invited to meet at the pool at 6:30 p m on Tues day. There were some minor problems with the asphalt plant that delayed the start of paving until Wednesday, Sept. 8. They started finishing the shoulders and ditch line on Tuesday, Sept. 14. Tidewater has scheduled the paint striping crew to be here on Wednesday, Sept. 15 and they should be completed the same day. The guardrail subcontractor finished placing the posts for the rail on Sept. 8 and will return on Thursday, Sept. 16 to hang the guardrail on the posts. They should be completed with this by Friday, Sept. 17. Tidewater will be working on cleanup and finishing small projects that need attention prior to acceptance of the road. As scheduled this week, the road should be opened for traffic by Monday, Sept. 20. The week of Sept. 20, Tidewater will be grading and adding rock to the Shaw Creek Grade to get the road in repair for final inspection and traffic will be on FS 53 Road (Coal Mine Hill). The only truck traffic that should be on the FS 53 Road and the Shaw Creek Grade (detour route) will be logging and chip trucks. Emergency access through the project will be maintained throughout the construction season. Willow Creek Road will remain open to local traffic only, as far as Cutsforth Park. The park will remain open through the normal season. The detour route through Shaw Creek Road to the four comers, to Penland Lake and Ukiah, is and will remain open to all traffic. During the 1999 construction season, Willow Creek Road (Coal Mine Grade) (FS 53 Road) will remain closed to all through traffic, from Cutsforth Park to the intersection of FS Roads 5321 (Penland Lake Road). There will be some logging truck traffic from the FS 21 road (Penland Lake Road) and chip truck traffic from the FS 5350 road (Texas Pit Road). Watch for log and chip trucks, travelers, campers and wood cutters, observe the warning signs, including the speed limit, on the Shaw Creek Road detour route, and observe the barricades at both ends of the construction zone. Have a safe summer and remember that the barricaded road closures are for the traveling public's safety. Federal Highways asks the traveling public for their patience, consideration and cooperation, and appreciates input from the public. Contact Robert G.
