Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, August 18,1999 - SEVEN Sponsors provide plenty of awards for 77th rodeo Cabbage Hill west-bound lanes open The Oregon Department of Transportation is finishing up Emigrant Hill-Poverty Flats road construction project. Westbound lanes at Cabbage Hill were scheduled to be open to traffic by August 14. Asphalt paving o f the passing lane, shoulders and interchange ramps is near completion on the westbound lanes while work continues on the guard rails, sign installation and durable striping Tile sign installation project involves putting in place speed signs, runaway ramps signs and interchange signs. Surface repairs to the bridge deck at Poverty Flats are complete and consisted of a concrete overlay to extend the life of the bridge deck. Through the end of August, crews will remove the temporary eastbound concrete barriers. Motorists can expect periodic traffic control and lane closures during this phase of work. During daytime hours, eastbound traffic will be moved to one lane while barriers are removed and the lane striping work is finished. The Emigrant Hill-Poverty Flats construction project began in the spring of 1997. As a result of the project, the westbound lanes will have one asphalt lane and one concrete lane. A third lane was added on the eastbound lanes, w hich now consist o f three concrete lanes. This third lane will allow room for slower traffic to stay to the right while providing room for other traffic to pass on the left. The Oregon Dept, of Transportation worked with the contractor. Wildish Standard Paving of Eugene, to complete this project. All work on the project is scheduled for completion bv October 3 1. The top award at the Morrow County Rodeo is the amateur calf roping saddle crafted by Bill McCoin of Severe Brothers Saddlery of Pendleton and sponsored by Frontier Resources. Also awarded at the Morrow County Rodeo to the champion open calf roper are the Neil Beamer Memorial Spurs, donated by the Beamer family and crafted by Kenny Hansen of Lewiston. ID. Peterson's Jewelers; and Breakaway Roping, Green Feed and Seed. lone Cardinals gear up for season By Mickie Winnett As harvest comes to a close, the lone Cardinals are getting geared up for another action- packed football season. After losing only one senior last year this year, lone will have five transfer students: Patrick Davidson, who came in from Stanfield during basketball last year, Michael Ferguison, who is from Meridan, Idaho, Cody Erickson, who also came in during basketball last year and is from Boise, Idaho, plus two exchange students. There also will be approximately four freshman coming out. Assistant coach Dennis Stefani stated, "We have quite a few returnees this year-there will be more maturity and growth. We are planning on around 25 kids turning out. I am really looking forward to having a successful season. Patrick Davidson and Corey Bennetto agreed that the lone Cardinals will be in a better frame of mind and more focused on the game "if we can keep the injuries down." Equipment was issued to seniors on Aug. 16; juniors, Aug. 17; sophomores, Aug. 18; and freshmen, Aug. 19. Stefani said shoes and hats are in for those players who ordered them. The weight room is available Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays for the boys. Practice will begin Monday, Aug. 23, starting with daily doubles. Coach Robin Graff said in the newsletter that the words for this year will be "No Excuses." The Cardinals' first home game is with Spray/Mitchell on Friday. Sept. 3.
