On Holy Saturday, April 3, a Vigil Mass of the Resurrection will be at 5 p.m. This celebration will include the service of light, blessing of the fire and lighting of the Easter candle, the Easter proclamation, liturgy of the word, blessing of Easter water, renewal of baptismal promises and Holy Mass. On Easter Sunday, April 4, Mass of the Resurrection will begin at 11 a.m. St. William Church St. William Church in lone will have Stations of the Cross on Good Friday, April 2, beginning at 5:30 p.m. On Easter Sunday, Mass of the Resurrection will be at 8:45 a.m. Heppner United Methodist Church Good Friday Service will be held at the Heppner United Methodist Church at the comer of Church and Gale streets, on Friday, April 2, at 8 p.m. On Easter Sunday, April 4, worship and celebration of communion will be held at 10:30 a.m. Everyone is invited to attend. i 1 Lexington Baptist Church is planning a morning of special activities for Easter Sunday. Following the Community Sunrise Service at the fairgrounds, an Easter breakfast will be served at the church from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Sunday school will follow the breakfast. Easter service will be at 11 a.m. Special music is planned and an ensemble group, comprised of violins, cello, woodwinds and brass instruments, will accompany the congregational singing. Matt Jepsen will perform a trumpet solo as well. The Easter message, entitled "Wonderful Times", will be delivered by Pastor Glenn Anderson. Lexington Baptist Church is located at 170 'B' Street in Lexington. Everyone is welcome to attend the morning's activities. First Christian Church A special worship service at the Heppner First Christian Church on Easter Sunday will start at 9:45 a.m. with fellowship, with coffee and donuts, followed by services at 10:30 a.m. Everyone is welcome to attend. WCCC ladies golf kickoff It’s time to think golf. Willow Creek Country Club (WCCC) women are invited to join in a golf game on Tuesday, April 6. Kickoff breakfast will be at 9 a.m., with play to follow at 10 a.m. The breakfast will be put on by the WCCC ladies’ officers. “Beginners are invited to come and join in the fun,” said WCCC member Bernice Lott. Seven Cub Scouts from Heppner Pack 661 went to the Columbia River District Pinewood Derby, held in Hermiston on March 27 and didn't come home empty handed. The pace brought home four trophies. The Scouts were Ben McCarl, Zach McCarl, Matt Holland, Bryan Holland, Curtis Harper, Seth Morgan, Scott Maker, Michael Merrill and James VanLiew. For the Tiger Cubs, Zach McCarl brought home a first- place trophy and Curtis Harper was fourth place winner. For the Wolves, Seth Morgan took the third place trophy. For the Bears, Ben McCarl earned a second place trophy. Zach McCarl was fourth place overall 1999 Columbia River District Pinewood Derby Grand Champion. Bike-a-Thon set for April 25 The annual lone St. Jude "Wheels for Life" Bike-a-thon is scheduled for Saturday, April 25, with registration to begin at noon near the lone Fire Hall. "Participants are urged to gather pledges now to raise funds for this worthwhile cause," said Anne Morter, St. Jude ride coordinator. Riders turning in $35 or more receive a St. Jude t- shirt. New this year to those raising $75 or more will be the choice of either a t-shirt and sports bag or a St. Jude sweatshirt. The rider gathering the most money over $100 will receive a dual cassette jam box. Two courses arc available. A one-mile circuit route within the city limits of lone is set for younger participants while anyone feeling up to the prospect of a longer ride is invited to tour the 22 scenic miles between Ruggs and lone. The ride will start at 1 p.m. at both locations. Participants are welcome to join the effort using other modes of transportation such as roller blades, baby Obituaries Ruben Leon-Torres Ruben Leon-Torres, 25, of Boardman, died Saturday, March 20,1999, at his home. Recitation of the Rosary was held Wednesday, March 24,1999 in the chapel at Bums Mortuary of Hermiston. Mass of Christian burial was held Thursday, March 25, 1999 at Our Lady of Angels Catholic Church in Hermiston with burial at Riverview Cemetery in Boardman. He was bom October 2, 1973, in Mexico, to Enrique Torres and Catalina Leon. When he was 12 years old, the family moved to the Boardman area. He attended jun ior high school in Imgon and gradu ated from Riverside High School at Boardman. He worked at various jobs and volunteered as a Boardman re serve police officer. In Novem ber 1996, he joined the U.S. Ma rine Corps and was currently serv ing as a corporal stationed at Camp Pendleton near San Diego, California. He enjoyed country music, karoake, wrestling, the military, and animals. Survivors include his wife, Miranda; son Michael; daughter, Shayla; his parents, Enrique Torres and Catalina Leon; and grandparents, A gustina and Guadalupe Leon, all of Boardman; grandmother Carmen Torres in Mexico; brothers, Hector of Yuma, A rizona, and Carlos, Esequiel, Ricardo and Rafael, all of Boardman; sisters, Guadalupe Torres-Colin and Irma Torres, both of Boardman and Alejandra Torres-Pacheco of Corvailis. The St. Jude Bike-a-thon raises funds for the St. Jude Children's Hospital in Memphis, TN. St. Jude Hospital, founded in 1962 by the late Danny Thomas, is the largest childhood cancer research center in America in terms of the number of patients treated and treatment success, said a news release. FAX SERVICE S end o r R eceive Heppner Gazette-Times 676-9211 Kathleen Ann Disque, 63, of Condon, died Saturday, March 27, 1999 at Mid-Columbia Medical Center in The Dalles. Graveside service was held Wednesday, March 31,1999 at the Condon Masonic Cemetery. Mrs. Disque was bom June 14, 1935, at the Turney Ranch, half way betw een Lonerock and Condon, to Rusty and Frances Huddleston Orwick. The family moved to Heppner in 1940 where she attended school until 1951 when they moved to Condon. She graduated from Condon High School in 1953. On February 3,1955, she mar ried Warren Disque at Condon. She had worked as a book keeper most of her life, at Colum bia Basin Electric, Highland Ma chinery and International Har vester, Flatt’s Truck Service and Butler Bookkeeping, all in Condon. She later purchased Butler Book keeping, which she operated until her retirement in 1981. Mr. Disque died in 1980. After her retirem ent in 1981, Mrs. Disque moved to Sandy where she lived with companion Steve Colt. Mr. Colt died in 1996, and she returned to Condon. She was a member of Gamma Epsilon Sorority. Survivors include daughter, Cindy Nicholson of Condon; son, Duane of Lexington; brother, Gene Orwick of Lexington; and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Warren, in 1980; companion, Steve Colt in 1996; her parents, and a brother, James Orwick. A celebration of life was held March 28, 1999, in Shadow Brook Mobile Estates in Clackamas. Mrs. Frye was bom May 22, 1947, in Condon. Her maiden name was Mabe. She moved to Portland in 1966 and was a floor supervisor for clothing companies, most recently Eiser Inc. In 1976, she married Wilmer Jr. Survivors include her husband; daughter, Chnstyl Lind of Portland; stepsons, Ronald of Bnngensburg, Germany, and Earl Whitfield of Floodwood, Minn.; stepdaughter, Betty Martin of San Pablo, Calif.; mother, Wilma Mabe of Heppner; sister, Sharyl Sizemore of Clackamas; three grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. Disposition was by cremation. The family suggests remembrances to Adventist Hospice. Arrangements were by Crown Cremation & Funeral Services in Milwaukie. Jean B. Crawford Jean B. Crawford, 74, Portland, died March 22, 1999, of a stroke. A funeral was held on March 25, 1999, in Redeemer Lutheran Church. Private interment was in Willamette National Cemetery. Jean B. Gaarsland was bom Sept. 12, 1924, in Fergus Falls, Minn. She and her family moved to Salem in 1937 and later to lone. After graduating from lone High School, she worked as an operator for the phone company in Heppner. During World War II, she was one of the first women from Morrow County to enlist in the armed services. For two years, she served in the U.S. Navy WAVES, reaching the rank of Specialist 3rd Class. After the war, she worked as an office clerk for Heppner Lumber Co. until 1947. She married Rodney "Pete" Crawford on October 11, 1947, and they moved to Portland where they raised their family Mrs. Crawford was a member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church. Survivors include her husband; daughters, Nancy Hughes of La Grande, Linda Minger of Hillsboro and Patti Crawford- Anderson of Portland; son, Tim of Portland; sisters, Gwen Healy and Ann Schwartz, both of Heppner, and Sue Mathes of Seattle; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her mother, Ida Coleman; her brother, Wallace Gaarsland; and her sister, Joan West. The family suggests remembrances to the American D iabetes A ssociation. In girls' singles, Molly Borrow gave Gen Wolff a run before losing 4-6. Barrow's strong serving and incessant energy kept her in the game. Jennifer Thompson defeated Amber Ament, 8-1. Thompson showed all around exemplary play to keep herself above Ament from the very beginning. Salli McElligott had a difficult time hitting her back court shots, losing to Elisha Wooderson 1-8. Salli had some key serves keeping Wooderson on guard. In girls' doubles, Ton Odinet and Erin Crowell teamed up to make a tough match for Abbie Melzer and Elisha Wooderson, defeating Sherman's doubles, 8- 0. Odinet and Crowell played tough at the net and covered the baseline excellently. Amellia Peck and Niki Sullivan had no trouble defeating Katie Ketchum and April Olson, 8-0. Sullivan is strong at the net while Peck's speed kept up with the plays in the back court. Allison Halvorsen and Katie Tworek defeated Katie Ketchum and April Olson, 8-4. Halvorsen's backhand improved immensely and Tworek's strong serves helped lift the duo over their opponents. In boys' singles, Steve Crum fell to Kolten Kock, 1-8. Crum had some hard hits and good plays but couldn't quite keep up with Kock's experience. Adam McCabe had a tough match against Joey Yourcheck, losing 7-9. McCabe played an excellent match against Yourcheck, keeping pace the entire match before falling to a player with more experience. Adam Neiffer defeated Shilo Langsten, 8-3. Neiffer’s serves were strong and hard, but his speed and agility are his greatest asset. In doubles, Adam Neiffer and Adam McCabe gave Nick Welk and Cole Shelton a run for their money before losing, 5-8. Neiffer and McCabe both are quick on the court, making it difficult to put them away. Jeremiah McElligott and Colin McElligott ended their winning season, losing 1-8 to Joey Yourcheck and Shilo Langsten. The duo of McElligott and McElligott are improving each and every game hitting shots and serves with more consistency.
