TEN - Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, March 17, 1999 Grain handlers oppose dam breaching A group of 17 gram handlers, elevator operators and farmers from Oregon, Idaho and Washington, organized by Pacific Northwest Grain and Feed Assn, just returned from a trip to Washington, D.C., where they visited with Congressmen and Senators on the issue of dam breaching on the lower Snake and Columbia Rivers. Those attending from this area were Barney Lindsay, Lexington, and Judy Rea, lone, representing the Morrow County Grain Growers. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers are studying the effects of breaching four dams on the lower Snake River and the John Day to restore endangered salmon runs. "The potential loss or disruption of river barging to this area would be devastating to a whole economy based on the river system," said Rea. The cheap power we now enjoy would be a thing of the past as well as the irrigation as we know it today." During the four days they visited with 25 Senate and House members in their three state area as well as Montana. "Their message was dam breaching is not an option," said Rea. "With the $61 million in the President's budget for studies and assessments of modifications, we suggested studies of methods to save salmon that work." The costs of removing the dams could be an estimated $1.2 billion without considering the economic impact to the environment, transportation, power, irrigation, wetlands or population, she said. Dog 4-H group Members of the newly-formed dog 4-H group include: Kim Morris with dog Nipper, a Dalmation; Whitney Wehrli, with Sheri, a Brittany; William Wehrli with Teddy, a Sheltie; Shane Key with Honey, a Cocker Spaniel; Tyler Key with Keilo, a Cocker; Rachel Key with Pierre, a Bichonfrise; Kristal Temple with Jewel; Amber Patton with Tia, a Shih Tzu; Drion Donner with Willie, a Blue Heeler; and Amanda Emery with Reggie, a Basset Hound. Ewe-do Bingo winner LaJuana McKenzie, Heppner, won the Ewe-Do-Bingo cash prize of $300 at the St. Patrick's Day Celebration. Proceeds from the event will go towards a swim team that Willow Creek Water Park manager, Bobbette Lovgren, is organizing. Volunteers and interested people are needed and may call 676-5752 or 676-5217 for more information. An organizational meeting will be held April 7, at 7 p.m. at the Willow Creek Water Park. Reggie Public invited to share old Boardman memories After the John Day Dam was built. Lake Umatilla covered the original Boardman townsite. Residents moved their homes and businesses to higher ground south of the Columbia River. For ease of demolition, the original Boardman Public School was set afire, used for volunteer fire training, then flattened to prevent possible danger to river navigation. On Palm Sunday, March 28, residents during those times of transition and interested public are invited to Riverside High School, 109 Boardman Ave NE, to view home movies of the "town on wheels" and the burning of the old school. Those present will be invited to share memories of the old school - Boardman Garden Club to choose yard of month The Boardman Garden Club will be selecting a yard in March to place the yard of the month sign. There will be an honorable mention sign as the runner-up yard. If anyone knows of a special yard he is asked to let a Garden Club member know. The club is looking for serious gardeners to meet once a month It night as an extension of the day club. If anyone is interested call Jane Dean, 481-5223. Anyone who lived or attended school in Boardman before the town was relocated is invited to come and share memories at "Honoring Our Past," March 28, 2-4 p.m., at Riverside High School. This event is free to the public and is a cooperative project of the Boardman Chamber of Commerce, Riverside High School and Boardman Tillicum Club. Last meeting the group planted garden seeds and houseplants which they hope to sell Apnl lb- 17 at the Grange Flea Market. Anyone wishing plants could check with the group as they may have some plants you want. The club elected new officers: Jane Dean, president; Martha Baker, vice president; Edna Melby, secretary/treasurer. New members are welcome. Income Tax Preparation Business - Individual - Partnership - Motorcross races awarded over $1780 in prizes The St. Paddy’s Motorcross Races were held at the Oregon Trail Pro Rodeo arena on Satur day, March 13 in Heppner. The total purse paid out to contestants was $ 1,781.55. One hundred, forty people entered the races. Gift certificates in the amount of $350 were awarded and the total value of trophies was over $440.
