S IX - Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, March 10,1999 Obituaries Bob McGuire Robert Keith “Bob” McGuire, 75, of Boardman, died Tuesday, March 2, 1999, at his home. The funeral for Mr. McGuire was held Saturday, March 6,1999, at the Boardman Community Church. He was bom November 19, 1923, at San Juan, Texas, to John P. and Verda L. Sturtevant Mc Guire. As a youngster, he lived at La Grande, where he was in the Boy Scouts. He later lived on a ranch at Smith Praine until he was 15, then he moved to Boise, Idaho where he worked for Momson- Knudson. In 1943, he joined the U.S. Navy, serving overseas until 1946. He worked as a cowboy and a brand inspector for a time, then went to work as an electrician/ lineman in construction. On February 8, 1958, he mar ried Jacque Bailey at McDermitt, Nevada. They lived at Bums and John Day and at Mountain Home, Idaho, where he worked at the m issile site. They traveled throughout the West while he worked on construction projects, including the John Day Dam, The Dalles Dam, Bonneville Dam and then the Boardman Coal Fire Plant. They moved to Boardman in 1977 and he retired in 1978 for health reasons, although he con tinued to raise cattle and rope horses. Mr. McGuire enjoyed team rop ing. He and his son, Jack, won two roping titles, one in 1981 and one in 1990. He enjoyed fishing, gar dening, animals and spending time with his family. He was a m em ber o f the Hermiston Elks, Rodeo Cowboys Association, IBEW Local 49 and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Survivors include his wife, Jacque, o f Boardm an; sons, Patrick of Boise, Idaho, Rodney of Condon, and Jack of Pendleton; daughters, Marchelle Downey of Boardman and Verda Lilly of La Grande; brother John Paul Jr. “Jack” M cGuire o f Shelton, Washington; sister Virginia Bones of Boise, Idaho; 13 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and sev eral nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, William Barry Valley; and two brothers, Thomas and James. Hammons, 89, of Hardman, died Friday, March 5, 1999, at Pioneer Memorial Hos pital in Heppner. By her request, there will be no Mineral services. Disposition was by cremation. A memorial gathering of fam ily and friends was held Wednes day, March 10,1999 at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ernie Dilley, Lex ington. Mrs. Hammons was bom May 11,1909, at Spokane, Washington, to Bill and Della Cox Ridle. She grew up at Spokane and attended schools there. For many years, Mrs. Hammons managed the Douglas County Humane Society kennels in Roseburg. She was an influential member of the American Kennel Club and was recognized for her love of animals. On November 11, 1962, she married Melvin Hammons, at Stevenson, Washington. The couple moved to the Heppner area in 1972. Survivors include her husband, Melvin, of Hardman; daughters, Connie Hammons of Roseburg, Glorene Baker Wright of Hepp ner. and Jeamne Dilley of Lexing ton; son, Nathan Hammons of Hardman; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
