Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, March 10,1999 - FIVE Warriors bounce Mustangs, 57-44 Boyer shoots Mustangs over Monroe By Rick Paullus By Rick Paullus The Heppner Mustang girls’ basketball team opened up the OSAA/US Bank 2A Basketball Championship by losing to the Amity Warriors, 57-44, on Tues day, March 2. The Warriors came out strong against the cold-shooting Mus tangs, building a 13-3 lead as the only Heppner points were an Amy Papineau rebound basket and a Casey Ingraham free throw. Another Papineau rebound and putback, and a Brooke Boyer three-point play narrowed the lead to 13-8, but the Warriors got a lay up at the buzzer to end the first quarter with a 15-8 lead. Kathleen Greenup scored on a nice pass from Jill Barber to open the second quarter, then hit a long jump shot to make it 17-12. Boyer scored on a nice pass from Ingraham to make it 20-14, but the Warriors went on a 9-0 run to take a 15 point lead. Barber hit a short jumper and Ingraham hit a free throw to cut the lead to 29-17 at halftime. Ingraham hit a jump shot and Jaci Hughes got a steal and lay-in to open the third quarter for Heppner. After an Amity free throw, Greenup scored on a nice pass from Barber to cut the lead to 30-23. But the Warriors went on a 13-3 run to end the third quar ter leading 43-26. The Warriors scored to open the fourth quarter to build their biggest lead of the game at 45- 26. But the Mustangs wouldn’t quit as Ingraham scored on a lay- in, Barber got a steal and lay-in and Ingraham hit a long jumper to cut the lead to 46-32. Greenup hit two free throws and got a steal and lay-in to make it 49-36 with 3:00 left. Ingraham hit two free throws to cut it to 49- 38 with 2:45 left, but the Warriors came back with a basket and free throw to build their lead back to 14 points. Ingraham hit on a run ning jumper and Hughes hit a three-pointer to cut the lead to 54- 43, but it wasn’t enough as the Warriors held on for the win. The Mustangs out-rebounded the Warriors, 38-25, including 16 offensive boards, but shot only 30 percent to the Warriors 45 per cent. Ingraham led the Mustangs with 12 points and nine rebounds. Greenup had a good game with 11 points, nine rebounds and three steals. Boyer had six points and two steals. Hughes had four steals and two assists. Casey Ingraham led the Mus tangs with 11 points and four re bounds. Ropp finished with 10 points. Jill Barber had nine points and four rebounds. Kathleen Greenup grabbed five rebounds, including four offensive boards. The Mustangs ended their sea son with a 12-15 overall record, but ended up in the top 12 teams in the state. The game marked the end of their Mustang careers for seniors Jaci Hughes, Jill Barber, Brooke Boyer, Kathleen Greenup and Jessica Maben. The number-one ranked Enter prise Savages ended the Heppner Mustangs girls’ basketball season with a 59-47 win in the consola tion semi-finals on Friday, March 5, at the Pendleton Convention Center. Enterprise jumped out to a big lead early at 19-7 after one and increased it to 23-7 early in the second before the Mustangs could get going. The Mustangs trailed 35-18 at halftime. The Mustangs played great defense in the third quarter, hold ing the Savages to just five points, but couldn’t get anything to drop as they scored just seven them selves. The Savages built the lead to 46-26, but the Mustangs wouldn’t quit and battled to make it respect- fill at the end. Ashley Ropp hit two three-pointers and three straight free throws in the last minute for Heppner. The essay contest is sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars. For years, the VFW and it Ladies Auxiliary have sponsored a high school speech contest, but in recent years they've added the essay contest for grades six-nine. The topic this year was "What Freedom Means to Me". Daniel was awarded a $200 savings bond by contest chairman Clarence Martin of Hermiston. The district received entries from schools in Pendleton, Hermiston, John Day, Umatilla and Columbia Junior High in Irrigon this year. Daniel's winning essay has been sent on to compete at the state level. Casey Ingraham grabbed a re bound o ff a missed Monroe Dragon shot, dnbbled down the floor and passed the ball to Brooke Boyer, who hit a jump shot on the baseline with two seconds left in overtime to keep the Heppner Mustangs alive m the consolation bracket of the OSAA/US Bank 2A state basketball tournament. The Mustangs jumped out to an early lead only to have the Drag ons come back to take a 10-9 lead. The Mustangs came back, though, to take a 15-12 lead after one. With Ingraham out with foul trouble, the Mustangs found them selves trailing 27-26 at halftime. The Dragons still held a one point lead at 36-35 going to the fourth quarter, but the Mustangs rallied to tie the game at 52-52 at the end of regulation. Both teams had chances to win but missed crucial free throws and shots down the stretch. Monroe held a 60-56 lead, but a basket by Ingraham with 42 sec onds left cut the lead to two. The Mustangs made a free throw to get within one and fouled with 13 seconds left. The Drag ons missed both free throws then a shot on the rebound to set up the heroics o f Ingraham and Boyer. Ingraham led the Mustangs with 14 points and seven re bounds. Jaci Hughes ended up with 13 points, seven rebounds, four steals and two assists before fouling out in overtime. Boyer ended up with 10 points and Ashley Ropp came off the bench to hit two three-pointers to help the Mustangs down the stretch. The Mustangs shot only 25 per cent from the field, but hit on 24- 36 free throws for 67 percent. St. Patrick's Senior Center Bulletin Board Ninety-seven people were served at the senior dinner Wed., Mar. 3, and 23 meals were home delivered. Members of the Hope and Valby Lutheran Churches served. Birthday cake was served by members of their families in honor of Janice Buecher and Mrs. Lang. Hearing aid assistance was given and blood pressures were taken before the meal. The menu for March 17 will be comed beef and cabbage, boiled potatoes, carrots, pear Jell-0 salad, clover leaf rolls and grasshopper pie. The Methodist Church will serve. Volunteers folded, stapled and put address stickers on newsletters for the Extension Service on Tuesday and Thursday. Cards were played Tuesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons. Exercise class is Tuesday and Thursday at 10 a.m. Bingo was played Friday evening. There will no bingo Friday, Mar. 12, due to the Methodist stew feed that evening. The senior breakfast will be served at the center from 6-9:30 a.m. Saturday, Mar 13. The seniors will also serve the potato soup, roll, pie and coffee lunch from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and pie and coffee from 2 to 4 p.m. The Nazarene Church will serve breakfast from 6 to 9 a.m. Sunday at the Senior Center. Tickets for the quilt raffle are still available at the Senior Center. The drawing for the quilt will be held Sunday, March 14, at the auction. More help is still needed for the luncheon on Saturday and quilt ticket sellers on Saturday and Sunday.
