EIGHT - Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, March 3, 1999 lone site council meets The lone Site Council, at their February 9 meeting, heard a report from Morrow County School Board member John Rietmann that the selection process for the Morrow County School Superintendent had narrowed the field to seven candidates. Rietmann also informed the council that teacher contract negotiations are still being held. lone High School Principal Dick Allen reported that he has been working on the President's Academic Excellence Award criteria. The award would be given to students exiting the fifth, eighth and 12th grades. He suggested that the criteria include a GPA of 3.5 or higher and an "exceed" rating on the state benchmark multiple choice test. A final decision was tabled until the March 10 meeting due to a large number of members absent. Rietmann reported that the school board would like the council to work further on finding solutions to the recent suggestion list forwarded to them. Allen took a poll of teachers asking how the site council could help them help prepare students for the state tests. The highest priority from the staff responding was additional prep time. Dale Holland suggested that we look at the possibility of modified block scheduling. The discussion was tabled until the March meeting. Charity McElligott mentioned that parents had approached her about the number of academic awards being given out. When students are filling out scholarship applications, they are noting a shortage of awards since many go to upperclassmen at too late a date to show up on the application. It was decided to see if more awards could be given in each subject area. Honored students this month included Katie Tworek, who placed first in the local Elks Scholarship Contest and who is a finalist for the WalMart Scholarship. Also, Jessica Krebs placed third in the local Elk Scholarship. Shelby Krebs placed second in international business at the District Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) contest. Finally, grades five, eight and 10 were commended for "working hard" on the recent state writing and math assessment tests. A decision was tabled on a request for reimbursement from a staff member who attended a conference recently. John Rietmann, Dick Allen, Dale Holland, Steve Schaber, Anne Morter, Charity McElligott and Betty Rietmann were present at the meeting.. The next meeting of the lone Site Council will be held on Wednesday, March 10, starting at 5 p.m. at Room One at lone High School. In the Service M arin e Pvt.
