In the Service Navy Seaman recruit G re gory G. MacDonald, son of Rob ert MacDonald of Heppner, re cently completed U.S. Navy ba sic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, IL. During the eight week program, MacDonald completed a variety o f training which included class room study and practical instruc tion on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and sur vival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness. MacDonald is a 1997 graduate of North Eugene High School, Eugene. Army National Guard Pfc. Christopher L. Gibson has graduated from One Station Unit Training (OSUT) at Fort Knox, Ky. The training included basic military training and advanced individual training. The first eight weeks o f initial entry training included basic combat training, drill and ceremonies, weapons, map reading, tactics, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid and Army history and traditions. During advanced individual training, the soldier was trained as an armor crewman to serve in tank units and conduct defensive and offensive combat operations. The trainee was instructed to operate, service and maintain armor tracked and wheeled vehicles, load and fire tank weapon systems, perform ammunition handling and supply duties and assist in target detection and identification. Gibson is the son of Richard and Elizabeth Gibson of Imgon. He is a 1998 graduate of Riverside High School, Boardman. Army National Guard Pvt. Francis D. Elliott has graduated from One Station Unit Training (OSUT) at Fort Knox, Ky. The training combines basic military training and advanced individual training. The first eight weeks of initial entry training include drill and ceremonies, weapons, map reading, tactics, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid and Army history and traditions. During the final seven weeks, soldiers receive advanced individual training as cavalry scouts. The training includes subjects and instructions to operate, maintain and fire M2/M3 Bradley fighting vehicles, call and adjust fire on enemy targets, recognize friendly and threat vehicles, conduct reconnaissance and security missions, perform foot patrols, conduct land navigation, locate and neutralize mines and operate and maintain scout vehicles.
