FOUR - Heppner Gazette-Tim es, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, December 9 ,1 9 9 8 Mustangs beat Cardinals Mustangs lose to Vikings By Rick Paulk» The visiting Umatilla Vikings beat the Heppner Mustangs, 73- 53, on Friday, Dec. 4. The Vikings made nine three-point field goals, six by C.J. Savage, and made 16 of 22 free throws to hold off the Mustangs. The Mustangs took an early 3- 2 lead on a three-point play by Casey Evans, only to see the Vi kings score the next eight points to lead, 10-3. Tim Dickenson scored four straight, but the Vi kings scored five to increase their lead to 15-7. A Dickenson basket and a steal and lay-in by Evans cut the lead to four, but a Vikings basket made the first quarter score 17-11. A basket by Craig Scott cut the lead to 19-17 midway through the second quarter. The Vikings then scored the next 10 points to take a 29-17 lead. A Scott basket cut the lead to 10, but the Vikings outscored Heppner 5-2 to make the halftime score 34-21. The third quarter was no bet ter as the Mustangs were out- scored 16-11 to fall behind 50-32 going into the fourth quarter. Ryan Matteson highlighted a fast-paced fourth quarter by hit ting two three-pointers, but the Mustangs could get no closer than 15 points. Dickenson led the Mustangs with 22 points, 11 rebounds and three blocked shots. Scott added 10 points and Jared Eckman pulled down six rebounds. Evans had five points, five assists and three steals. The Mustangs got back on the winning track on Saturday, Dec. 5, at lone by beating the young Cardinals, 63-29. Ryan Matteson got the Mus tangs going with a three-pointer and Jared Eckman made a free throw and then a three-point play to make it 7-0. The Cardinals’ Patrick Davidson had a three- point play to make it 7-3 before Tim D ickenson scored four straight and Craig Scott had his own three-point play to make the score 14-3. Korey Morgan made a basket to cut the lead to 14-5. Casey Evans then made two free throws and a lay-in. Eckman made a bas ket and Evans hit another free throw to make it 21-5, Mustangs, at the end of the first quarter. The Mustangs hit eight o f 10 free throws in the quarter. The Mustangs continued pour ing it on in the second quarter and, after Matteson hit two straight three-pomters, the Mustangs led 32-9. The Cardinals fought back and a long three-pointer by Jacob Neiffer at the buzzer made the halftime score 33-16. Matteson scored 10 o f the Mustangs 12 points. The Mustangs outscored the Cardinals 12-8 in the third quarter to take a 45-24 lead in to the fourth quarter. The fourth quarter was all Mustangs as they outscored lone 18-5. Riley Tingue came off the bench to score four points and Derek Gunderson hit a three- pointer for the Mustangs. Eckman led the Mustangs with 16 points, seven rebounds and five steals. Matteson scored 13 points, including three three-pointers. Evans had seven points, nine re bounds, six assists and four steals. Brad Burright led the Cardinals with seven points and Allan Gribskov had six points. Heppner jumped out to a 12-4 lead early in the first quarter with Tim Dickenson, Casey Evans and Jared Eckman each scoring four points. Dickenson picked up his third foul with 2:54 left with the Mustangs up 18-10. The Blue Devils closed the fast-paced first quarter down by five at 22-17. Evans finished with eight points in the quarter. The second quarter was con siderably slower as both teams cooled off and five straight points by Condon’s Josh Gawith closed the gap to 26-24. But a basket by Blake Knowles and two baskets by Craig Scott made the halftime score 32-24. The Mustangs blew the game open in the third quarter, outscoring Condon, 14-5. Hepp ner outscored the Blue Devils 10- 1, with Eckman scoring four, to take a 46-29 lead into the fourth quarter. Evans hit a three-pointer to give the Mustangs their biggest lead at 51-31 before Condon ral lied to make the score close. Condon’s Todd Shaffer hit a three- pointer to make the final score 56- 46. Shaffer and Gawith lead all scorers with 14 points each. The Mustangs were led by Dickenson and Evans with 12 points each. Scott scored nine points and Eckman had eight points, nine rebounds and two blocked shots. Ryan Matteson fin ished with five points and three blocked shots. Bias Elguezabal came off the bench to gather six rebounds. “The kids did a good job and we got to look at everybody. We had a lapse in the second quarter, but came back in the second half to put the game out o f reach,” coach Chuck Matteson said after the game.
