Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, December 9,1998 • THREE Lady Cards win squeaker over Rockets Boys defeated by Pilot Rock Nikki McElligott launched a last second attack on the Pilot Rock Rockets to squeeze out a narrow 62-61 victory for the lone Cardinals at Pilot Rock Friday, December 4. Charissa Gates got the Cardinals started by hitting a three-point shot in the first quarter o f the game. The Cardinals tied the Rockets 55-55 at the end o f the fourth quarter, forcing the Rockets into overtime. The Cardinals trailed 59-61 until just before the last second o f the game when McElligott launched her own defensive shot and made a three-point bucket putting the Cardinals on top. Scoring for the Cardinals was led by McElligott with 31 points. Camie Bumght followed with 19 points for the team. When coach Chris Davis was asked about the game his response was, "We played hard, but didn’t play real well. The team did enough to win, so I can’t be disappointed." The lone boys varsity team stayed competitive with the Rockets, trailing only by four points at half time. Pilot Rock gained more o f a lead in the second half, leading the Cardinals 71-48 by the end o f the fourth quarter. Freshman Brad Bumght led the Cardinal scoring with 24 points and was tough on the boards, leading the team in rebounds. Allan Gribskov added 13 more points and guided the Cardinals in assists; Korey Morgan exercised tough defense with five steals and dished out four assists. The lone boys JV team was unable to bring home a win on Friday evening, losing to Pilot Rock 37-71. The lead scorer for the Cardinal JV team was Patrick Davidson with 13 points. Davidson shot 82 percent from the free throw line and played excellent defense under the basket for the Cardinals. Lady Cardinal JVs also had a tough game with Pilot Rock, losing their game 56-8. lone struggled with their passes while Pilot Rock had a tough defense and played good team ball. ’We need to learn to put some zip on our passes and do a better job o f anticipating what the defense is doing," said coach Duane Neiffer after the game. After a low-scoring first quar ter, the Mustangs built a 19-12 halftime lead. The Mustangs ex ploded for 21 points in the third quarter to blow the game open and take a 40-22 lead. M ichael McCabe scored nine of his 11 points in the quarter. The Mustangs were led by Blake Knowles with 15 points and Chris Bowman added eight points. Stefan Matheny scored seven points and had a good game at point guard.
