EIGHT - Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, November 18,1998 lone Booster Club holds meeting The lone Booster Club met Thursday, Nov. 12, at Beechers Cafe. Due to meeting night being changed to Monday, members voted to move the meeting place to the high school library. Meetings will begin at 7 p.m. The upcoming basketball tournament was discussed. Jessica Krebs won the contest to name the tournament, with coaches selecting "lone Basketball Bonanza" as the new name. The tournament will begin with a 3 p.m. game on Friday, Dec. 11, and conclude with the boys' championship game at 6:15 p.m. on Saturday, Dec 12. Enterprise girls and boys will be stay ing in homes for the weekend, with Debbie Morgan in charge of finding accommodations for the boys and Jeri McEllligotl for the girls. The club is in charge of all concessions. Morgan is chairperson. Dean Robinson will organize middle school students to do the three-point shoot during the half time of the games. Robinson will order new uniforms for the middle school students, which can be used for several sports. The club voted to pay the $509 balance due for the cost of the uniforms. Basketball schedule changes were announced by Robinson. He also noted Arlington will move to the west side of the Big Sky Conference to even out the number of teams on each side. Gym improvements were discussed. Principal Dick Allen has agreed that some painting needs to be done, but it will have to be put off until summer due to P.E. classes using the gym now. It was suggested the district championship boards be redone so they are all the same size. Debbie Raidie will check on prices for boards and prices for making a championship track flag. The Culver mascot sign will be taken down and Robinson will check on removing extra wires left from the old sound system. Members thanked Duane Neiffer for his participation in passing the recreation district measure. Bill and Gregg Rietmann and Robinson were thanked for building a railing on the football bleachers. Raidie showed a middle school track video she had made. Club members are discussing making a video of all school activities for the year. Raidie will make a video of the girls' volleyball season and asks people to give her videos or photographs to work with. She will return all pictures and asks people to write their names on the back of pictures sent to her. Raidie's address is P.O. Box 247 in lone. The next meeting of lone Booster Club will be Monday, Dec. 7, at 7 p.m. at the high school library . All Saints Episcopal plans Thanksgiving feast Plans are underway once again for the All Saints' Episcopal Church annual Thanksgiving Day feast. The feast was started many years ago by Bob and Theta Lowe, members of All Saints'. It is now hosted by another couple. Bob and Aloha DeSpain. The DeSpains' provide the dinner with the help of many people. The Bank of Eastern Oregon purchases the turkeys, and anyone who is able and would like to, may bring salads. Regis ends Mustangs1 season By Rick Paullus The Regis Rams ended the Heppner Mustangs' football season with a 50-19 win on Saturday, Nov. 14, in the first round of the State 2 A playoffs in a game played at Cascade High School in Turner. The Mustangs received the kick-off to start the game and gave Regis the ball at their own 12-yard line on a fumble on third down. After Regis had a first and goal at the six, Blake Knowles sacked the quarterback for an II yard loss to the 17. Two incomplete passes made it fourth down and Michael Schonbachler and Josh Hill tackled the runner for a three- yard loss, giving the Mustangs the ball at their own 20 yard line. The Mustangs were forced to punt as they couldn't move the ball which was blocked and recovered by the Rams at the Mustangs' five-yard line. On second down, Adam Lulay scored on a two-yard run. The kick was no good and Regis led 6-0 with 6:18 left in the first quarter. Derek Gunderson returned the Regis kick-off 20 yards to give the Mustangs first down at the 32-yard line. Craig Scott rushed twice for seven yards and Gunderson took a pitch from Ryan Matteson for eight yards and a first down. A clipping penalty brought up a second and 13 from the 44 of Heppner. Matteson then hit Tim Dickenson for 42 yards down to the 14 of Regis. On a fourth down from the 10, Scott ran in for the touchdown. Knowles' kick was good to give the Mustangs their only lead of the game at 7-6 with 2:16 left in the first quarter. Regis took over at the 50 yard line after an unsuccessful on side kick. The Mustangs defense held as Casey Evans and desserts, potatoes, olives or other favorite foods. On first down Dustin Lulay ran around end for a 4 1-yard touchdown. The kick failed and Regis now led 33-13 with 3:14 left in the second quarter. Neither team was able to move the ball and the half ended with Regis ahead 33-13. Regis returned the second half kick-ofT down to the 30 of Heppner. A Paul Lulay pass to Dustin Lulay set up a one-yard touchdown run by Morgan Highberger. Highberger ran in the two-point conversion to give Regis a 41-13 lead with 10:34 left in the third. Scott returned the kickoff to the 42 of Heppner. Gunderson ran for three yards then Matteson hit Jared Eckman for 39 yards, but on a fourth and 14, Gunderson was only able to get 10 yards and Regis took over at their own 10. The Mustangs' defense stiffened and forced Regis to punt at their own 32-yard line. Geer rushed in and blocked the punt but a face mask penalty on the recovery allowed Regis to punt the ball again with Heppnei taking over at the 50- yard line. Dickenson picked up 32 yards on a pass from Matteson on first down and Gunderson ran for eight down to the 10. A running play lost three yards, then Schonbachler ran for six yards and a first down at the seven. Schonbachler ran for four and Geer ran for two down to the one. Schonbachler then ran for the touchdown. The pass failed and the Regis lead was cut to 41-19 with 2:48 left in the third. Regis took the kickoff and marched down the field and, on the first play of the fourth quarter, Paul Lulay hit Dustin Lulay for a 15-yard touchdown pass. Dustin Lulay kicked the extra point to give Regis a 48-19 lead. Neither team was able to move the ball in the fourth quarter as Regis picked up a safety on a Mustang fumble in the end zone with 1:35 left, to make the final score 50 to 19. The Mustangs' defense was led by Levi Geer with 21 defensive points, including a blocked punt. Casey Evans ended up with 20 points and a quarterback sack. Derek Gunderson had 14 points. Craig Scott and Michael Schonbachler each had 11 points and Blake Knowles had 10 points including a fumble recovery. Scott led the rushing with 31 yards on seven carries. Ryan Matteson was five for 16, passing for 137 yards and two interceptions. Evans was one for one for 71 yards and a touchdown. Tim Dickenson had three receptions for 79 yards and Jared Eckman had two receptions for 58 yards. The Mustangs ended the season with six and four record. It also marked the end of the high school football careers of seniors Derek Gunderson, Casey Evans, Jared Eckman, Tim Dickenson, Bias Eguezabal and Shane Matheny. Lulay 1-1 St. Patrick's Senior Center Bulletin Board ___ Sixty-seven people, were present for the senior dinner Nov. 11. Members of the First Christian Church served. The Senior Center board met following the meal. Blood pressures were taken before the meal. The menu for Wednesday, Nov. 25, will be beef stew with vegetables, coleslaw, molded gelatin salafl, com bread, ice cream and cookies. Members of the Nazarene and Seventh-day Adventist churches will serve. Fifty-one people were present for the Thursday luncheon. The menu for lunch Thursday , Nov. 18, will be soup, cold cut sandwich bar, fruit/vegetable salad bar and dessert. The seniors extend their sympathy to the families of John Wood and Iva Booker who passed away recently. They were both former members of St. Patrick's Senior Center. Jan and Less Paustian hosted a farewell party for Ellen (Doll) Campbell Saturday afternoon in the recreation room at the Senior Center. A large number of friends came to wish her well. We w ill miss her. She has been a tenant of St. Patrick's apartments for several years. A reception honoring Iva Booker was held in the dining room, a time of remembering her long life. She had been a tenant of the apartment in St. Patrick's. The Dollaride Van is being scheduled by Barbara Hayes now. She can be reached at 676-5644 on Thursdays or at her home 676-9841. A meeting of the Senior Center staff will be held on Tues., Nov. 24, at 10 a.m. Mrs. Hayes will be present for the meeting, as will be two new office volunteers. Cards were played on Tuesday ai d Friday afternoons. Remember: exercise at 10 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays except no exercise Tuesday, Nov. 24, due to the staff meeting. All pinochle players are welcome to join the card players on Tuesday and Friday afternoons at 1 p.m. Bingo is every Friday evening at 7 p.m. Proceeds go to help support the center.
