Andrew Reitmann ran in two touchdowns to give the Cardinals a 14-6 lead over the Cougars in the first half. The second half was all Koby Rea as he scored two more touchdowns tq give the Cardinals a 28-6 win over the Cougars. "We have really worked as a team this year. It has helped our game a lot," said Mike Radié. The Cardinals worked as a team as they gang tackled, protected the quarterback and blocked for big running plays. Cayle Krebs picked up three fumbles, one offensively and two defensively, to keep the Cardinals in control of the ball. Krebs also made key tackles and sacks throughout the game. Number 15 made the one touchdown for the Cougars with a touchdown pass from the quarterback. The Cardinals played Condon at Ione Friday, Oct. 16. lone Pulverizes Honkers in homecoming game By Tracy Bennetto Griffith and Jaysi had eight points. Erin Crowell did an incredible job setting with 23 good sets. McElligott and Camie Burright had "awesome" kills that left the Honkers stunned. "I think that the homecoming spirit remained unbreakable in the Cardinal's gym," commented coach Charity McElligott. The Cardinals' next game was October 8 at Wheeler. The Ione High School varsity volleyball team plucked the Arlington Honkers in a 15-3, 15- 5 victory on homecoming night, October 2. Katie Tworek served over 10 points, four of them aces, to win the title of leading scorer for the Cardinals. Tworek was followed closely by Nikki McElligott who Mustangs JV team loses to TigerScots By Brian Rust The Heppner Mustangs JV team went to Athena on October 12, ready to play after their devastating loss to the Wahtonka Eagles the week before. However, the JV team lost to the Tiger-Scots, 35-14. The game started off with the Mustangs receiving. Michael McCabe ran the kick-off 80 yards for the first touchdown eight seconds into the game, The It was a Mustang stampede when Weston-McEwen came to town on Thursday, October 15, as the net squads swept the Tiger-Scots. The varsity used only their first five servers to put game one in the book. The Mustangs lead 5-3 when Brooke Boyer went back and ran the Heppner score to 13. The Tiger-Scots next server managed two points before Janelle Healy served the final two points to win game one, 15-5. Although the second game ended with an almost identical score, 15-6, it was a lot more exciting with Mustang setters Boyer and Jill Barber targeting their sets to every Mustang hitter. The crowd saw some short sets as well as sets to the back row. The JV Mustangs won their match 15-4, 15-13. Heppner dished up some hot serves in The Heppner Mustang JV football team beat the Pilot Rock JV team 32-14 on Monday, Oct. 19. After recovering a Pilot Rock fumble, the Mustangs' Matt Baker picked up 30 yards to get the Mustangs down to the 10- yard line. Travis Bellamy then ran twice, the last one covering four yards for Heppner's first touchdown. Bellamy ran in the two-point conversion to give the Mustangs an early 8-0 lead. With eight minutes left in the second quarter, Brian Rust scored on a one-yard run. Stefan Matheny ran in the two-point conversion to give the Mustangs a 16-0 lead. Pilot Rock scored on a 34-yard pass play to narrow the gap to 16-6 with 3:48 left in the second quarter. After the Rockets had held the Mustangs on downs, Bellamy picked off a pass in the flat. Michael McCabe ran the ball 21 yards down to the five yard line. Bellamy ended the drive with a one yard touchdown run. Matheny ran in the two-pointer to make the score 24-6 at the two-point conversion was good. The next drive the Mustangs scored on a 10-yard run by Travis Bellamy. Neither team found the end zone in the fourth quarter as the defenses dominated play. Mary’s By Jaysi Bennetto The Ione Middle School Cardinals took on the St. Mary Blue Angels for the third game of the season October 2. The Cardinals beat the Blue Angels, 15-4, 15-8. The Cardinals started off with a great lead in the first match. Leading scorer Caitlin Orem had eight straight points with no returns from the Blue Angels. The Cardinals won the first The first round play-off game between the Heppner Colts and Stanfield has been changed to 6:30 p.m. in Heppner. The change is due to some work being done to the high school irack in Hermiston. The other play-off game between Les Schwab and Wal- Mart has been moved to the Armand Lanve field at an earlier time because that field has no lights. The championship game will be played on Saturday at a site and time to be named later. Ione High School coach and former teacher, D?1 LaRue has been named the 1997-1998 ■ ■ ■ ■ The Heppner High School football game scheduled for this Friday, Oct. 23, at Stanfield has been cancelled. According to HHS, Stanfield is forfeiting the game because they have only 11 players able to play. A regular board meeting of the Morrow SWCD/Weed Advisory Board will be held Tuesday, October 27, at 4:30 p.m. at the Pettyjohn Building in Heppner. Agenda items include: review of Environmental Quality The First Christian Church at the comer of Gale and Center streets in Heppner will hold its annual "Fall Frolic" Saturday. October 24, from 10 a.m. 12 p.m. "This is a fun activity for children in the sixth grade and under," said a spokesperson. ■ The game was originally on the schedule for Oct. 30 and then rescheduled for Oct. 23. Both those dates will now be BYEs for the Mustangs. Although both teams demonstrated aggressive play, the Heppner Cs never allowed Weston-McEwen to put more than two points together before claiming the side-out. match 15-4. In the second match, the Blue Angels led 3-0 at one point. After a rough start, the Cardinals jumped back into the game and won it for Ione with a score of 15-8. "The girls were expecting more action against St. Mary's, but maybe next week we can play more as a team," said Cardinal coach Barb Peterson. The next game was held in Ione against Echo.
