Cardinals thrash Cougars Mustang JVs win final game

The Cardinals proved their
strength in both defense and
offense as they beat the Echo
C ougars,
28-6,
Thursday
afternoon, Oct. 8.
fl’c Cardinals pulled out all
t un guns as they broke tackles,
clocked, and tackled like never
before. Andrew Reitmann ran in
two touchdowns to give the
Cardinals a 14-6 lead over the
Cougars in the first half.

Cougars.
"We have really worked as a
team this year. It has helped our
game a lot," said Mike Radié.
The Cardinals worked as a team
as they gang tackled, protected
the quarterback and blocked for
big running plays.
Cayle Krebs picked up three
fumbles, one offensively and
two defensively, to keep the
Cardinals in control of the ball.
Krebs also made key tackles and
sacks throughout the game.
Number 15 made the one
touchdown for the Cougars with
a touchdown pass from the
quarterback.
The Cardinals played Condon at
Ione Friday, Oct. 16.
lone Pulverizes Honkers
in homecoming game

did an incredible job setting with
23 good sets. McElligott and
Camie Burright had "awesome"
kills that left the Honkers
stunned.
"I think that the homecoming
spirit remained unbreakable in
the Cardinal's gym," commented
coach Charity McElligott.
The Cardinals' next game was
October 8 at Wheeler.
The Ione High School varsity
volleyball team plucked the
Arlington Honkers in a 15-3, 15-
5 victory on homecoming night,
October 2.
Katie Tworek served over 10
points, four of them aces, to win
the title of leading scorer for the
Cardinals. Tworek was followed

to TigerScots

The Heppner Mustangs JV
team went to Athena on October
12, ready to play after their
devastating loss to the Wahtonka
Eagles the
week before.
However, the JV team lost to the
Tiger-Scots, 35-14.
The game started off with the
Mustangs receiving. Michael
McCabe ran the kick-off 80
yards for the first touchdown
eight seconds into the game, The

as the net squads swept the
Tiger-Scots.
The varsity used only their
first five servers to put game
one in the book. The Mustangs
lead 5-3 when Brooke Boyer
went back and ran the Heppner
score to 13. The Tiger-Scots
next server managed two points
before Janelle Healy served the
final two points to win game
one, 15-5.
Although the second game
ended with an almost identical
score, 15-6, it was a lot more
exciting with Mustang setters
Boyer and Jill Barber targeting
their sets to every Mustang
hitter. The crowd saw some
short sets as well as sets to the
back row.

After recovering a Pilot Rock
fumble, the Mustangs' Matt
Baker picked up 30 yards to get
the Mustangs down to the 10-
yard line. Travis Bellamy then
ran twice, the last one covering
four yards for Heppner's first
touchdown. Bellamy ran in the
two-point conversion to give the
Mustangs an early 8-0 lead.
With eight minutes left in the
second quarter, Brian Rust
scored on a one-yard run. Stefan
Matheny ran in the two-point
conversion to give the Mustangs
a 16-0 lead.
Pilot Rock scored on a 34-yard
pass play to narrow the gap to
16-6 with 3:48 left in the second
quarter.
After the Rockets had held the
Mustangs on downs, Bellamy
picked off a pass in the flat.
Michael McCabe ran the ball 21
yards down to the five yard line.
Bellamy ended the drive with a
one yard touchdown run.
Matheny ran in the two-pointer
to make the score 24-6 at the
two-point conversion was good.
The next drive the Mustangs
scored on a 10-yard run by
Travis Bellamy. This time the
conversion was no good. That

The Ione Middle School
Cardinals took on the St. Mary
Blue Angels for the third game
of the season October 2. The
Cardinals beat the Blue Angels,
15-4, 15-8.
The Cardinals started off with a
great lead in the first match.
Leading scorer Caitlin Orem
had eight straight points with no
returns from the Blue Angels.

6:30 p.m. in Heppner.

football game scheduled for this
Friday, Oct. 23, at Stanfield has
been cancelled. According to
HHS, Stanfield is forfeiting the
game because they have only 11
players able to play.

Pettyjohn Building in Heppner.

managed only three more
counters before Amy Papineau
went back to finish them off
with points 11 through 15 for
the win.
Game two was a different
story with the game tied at
points three, four, and eight
before the Mustangs were able
to slowly pull away. Just when
it looked Heppner had it in the
bag with a 14-9 lead, the Tiger-
Scots clawed up to 13. After
grabbing the sideout, the
Mustangs were able to put it
away with Laurie Michael

"The girls were expecting more
action against St. Mary's, but

more as a team," said Cardinal
