! « snst : SIX - Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, October 14.1998 Local teen shoots 4X4 buck Bulldogs drop Mustangs By R ic k Paulies The Heppner Mustangs traveled to Culver on Saturday, Oct. 10, and were beaten by the Bulldogs, 32-22. The Bulldogs jumped out to an 8-0 lead on their first possession on a 26-, and touchdown run by quarterback Ryan Overcash. Overcash passed to Jeremy Benningfield for the two-point conversion. The two teams then traded pants before the Mustangs took over on their own 26- yard line. The Mustangs then began driving the ball, picking up three first downs getting to the 4 1 of Culver. A lateral pass was fumbled on the next play and Benningfield picked up the loose ball and ran 55 yards for the touchdown. The two point conversion was good, giving Culver a 16-0 lead 2:12 left in the first quarter. The Mustangs then recovered an unsuccessful onside kick at their own 49. Heppner then drove down to the Culver three yard line before a fumble on a handotT gave the ball back to the Bulldogs. The Mustangs’ defense held and go the ball back at their own 42- yard line. Heppner’s’ third fumble of the first half gave the ball back to the Bulldogs at the 50 yard line. The Mustangs took over on their own 35- yard line on the second half kick-off. A 30- yard run on a sweep around left end b, Derek Gunderson took the ball down to the 23- yard line. Ryan Matteson then hit Tim Dickenson for a 23-, and touchdown pass to put the Mustangs on the board. The pass on the conversion attempt was now good to make the score 16-6 with 9:12 left in the third quarter. On Culver's next possession, Gunderson intercepted a pass, giving the Mustangs the ball at their own 33- yard line. But the Mustangs gave the ball right back on their fourth fumble of the game. The Bulldogs moved the bell down to the six- yard line where Seth Boyer ran it in for the touchdown. Overcash passed to Alex Carlson for the two-point conversion to increase the bulldog lead to 24-6 with 5:37 left. The Mustangs started at their own 22-yard line and drove down to the Culver six with the aid of a 29- yard run by Craig Scott. The Bulldog defense held and took over on downs. The defense held as Blake Knowles and Clint Bellamy sacked Overcast for a nine-yard loss to bring up fourth down. The Mustangs took over at the Bulldog 30-yard line after the short punt. A couple of short runs and a 14- yard pick-up by Gunderson set up a 13-yard run for a touchdown by Gunderson. Matteson passed to Scott for the two-point conversion to close the score to 24-14 with 9:04 left in the game. The Bulldogs then drove down the field and scored another touchdown on a sic-yard Overcash pass to Benningfield. Overcash passed to Carlson for the two-point conversion to make the score 32-14 with 3:24 left. The Mustangs took over at their own 35 after the kick-off sailed out of bounds. Gunderson picked up seven yards on a pass from Matteson, followed by a 21-yard pass to Jared Eckman. Matteson hit Eckman for a 39-yard touchdown pass and then hit Casey Evans for the two-point conversion to make the score 32- 22 with 2:12 left. The Mustangs got the ball right back and a 26-yard catch by Evans took the ball down to the 30- yard line of the Bulldogs. Overcash then intercepted a pass and took the ball back to midfield to kill the drive. The Mustangs defense held and forced a punt, taking over at their own 31 yard line. The game ended, however, on a 26 yard pass to Eckman. Ryan Matteson ended up completing 11 o f 18 passes for 198 yards and two touchdowns with one interception. Jared Eckman was the leading receiver with five catches for 91 yards and a touchdown. Derek Gunderson had two receptions for 26 yards and Tim Dickenson caught one pass for 23 yards and a touchdown. Gunderson rushed nine times for 76 yards and a touchdown. Levi Geer rushed 12 times for 44 yards and Craig Scott ran the ball seven times for 39 yards. Dickenson led the defense with 24 defensive points and a fumble recovery. Geer ended with 16 points. Eckman had 14 points along with Casey Evans who also had a fumble recovery. Gunderson had 13 points and two interceptions. Clint Bellamy had 13 points and Scott added 10 points. The Mustangs dropped to three and three on the year and two and one in the Columbia Basin Conference. Heppner needed four more serve rotations before they were able to take the win. In game two the Mustangs quickly took control of the game and just refused to allow the Tigers to score. As a team the JVs posted a dismal 71 percent (37/52) service success. 100 percent serving was contributed by Leah Denton (6/6), Ashley Ropp (4/4) and Amy Drake (3/3). The Heppner Cs won their match 15-5, 15-11. The Mustangs jumped all over them in game one as Heppner quickly established an 11-1 lead, then sustained their edge to take the win. In game two the Mustangs were down 3-9 when Shelley Rietmann went back to deliver points four through 12 to t^ke a lead which the Mustangs ne\er relinquished. The young Mustangs held onto the lead to take the game and the match. 4769200 1 2* % Colts beat Irrigon 8-0 The Heppner Colts scored an early touchdown to take an 8-0 lead and hung on to defeat Irrigon on Wed., Oct 7, at Heppner. On Irrigon's first series, Jode Coil intercepted a pass and returned it to the 30-yard line of Irrigon. Coil capped the drive with a five-yard run around end for the touchdown. David Flynn kicked the extra point, giving the Colts an 8-0 lead.
