Bulldogs drop Mustangs
By R ic k Paulies
The Heppner Mustangs traveled
to Culver on Saturday, Oct. 10,
and were beaten by the Bulldogs,
32-22.
The Bulldogs jumped out to an
8-0 lead on their first possession
on a 26-, and touchdown run by
quarterback Ryan Overcash.
Overcash passed to Jeremy
Benningfield for the two-point
conversion.
The two teams then traded
pants before the Mustangs took
over on their own 26- yard line.
The Mustangs then began driving
the ball, picking up three first
downs getting to the 4 1 of Culver.
A lateral pass was fumbled on the
next play and Benningfield
picked up the loose ball and ran
55 yards for the touchdown. The
two point conversion was good,
giving Culver a 16-0 lead 2:12
left in the first quarter.
The Mustangs then recovered an
unsuccessful onside kick at their
own 49. Heppner then drove
down to the Culver three yard line
before a fumble on a handotT
gave the ball back to the
Bulldogs.
The Mustangs’ defense held and
go the ball back at their own 42-
yard line. Heppner’s’ third fumble
of the first half gave the ball back
to the Bulldogs at the 50 yard
line.
The Mustangs took over on
their own 35- yard line on the
second half kick-off. A 30- yard
run on a sweep around left end b,
Derek Gunderson took the ball
down to the 23- yard line. Ryan
Matteson then hit Tim Dickenson
for a 23-, and touchdown pass to
put the Mustangs on the board.
The pass on the conversion
attempt was now good to make
the score 16-6 with 9:12 left in
the third quarter.
On Culver's next possession,
Gunderson intercepted a pass,
giving the Mustangs the ball at
their own 33- yard line.
But the Mustangs gave the ball
right back on their fourth fumble
of the game.
The Bulldogs
moved the bell down to the six-
yard line where Seth Boyer ran it
in for the touchdown. Overcash
passed to Alex Carlson for the
two-point conversion to increase
the bulldog lead to 24-6 with 5:37
left.
The Mustangs started at their
own 22-yard line and drove down
to the Culver six with the aid of a
29- yard run by Craig Scott. The
Bulldog defense held and took
over on downs.
The defense held as Blake
Knowles and Clint Bellamy
sacked Overcast for a nine-yard
loss to bring up fourth down. The
Mustangs took over at the
Bulldog 30-yard line after the
short punt.
A couple of short runs and a 14-
yard pick-up by Gunderson set up
a 13-yard run for a touchdown by
Gunderson. Matteson passed to
Scott for the two-point conversion
to close the score to 24-14 with
9:04 left in the game.
The Bulldogs then drove down
the field and scored another
touchdown on a sic-yard
Overcash pass to Benningfield.
Overcash passed to Carlson for
the two-point conversion to make
the score 32-14 with 3:24 left.
The Mustangs took over at their
own 35 after the kick-off sailed
out of bounds. Gunderson picked
up seven yards on a pass from
Matteson, followed by a 21-yard
pass to Jared Eckman. Matteson
hit Eckman for a 39-yard
touchdown pass and then hit
Casey Evans for the two-point
conversion to make the score 32-
22 with 2:12 left.
The Mustangs got the ball right
back and a 26-yard catch by
Evans took the ball down to the
30- yard line of the Bulldogs.
Overcash then intercepted a pass
and took the ball back to midfield
to kill the drive.
The Mustangs defense held and
forced a punt, taking over at their
own 31 yard line. The game
ended, however, on a 26 yard
pass to Eckman.
Ryan Matteson ended up
completing 11 o f 18 passes for
198 yards and two touchdowns
with one interception.
Jared Eckman was the leading
receiver with five catches for 91
yards and a touchdown. Derek
Gunderson had two receptions for
26 yards and Tim Dickenson
caught one pass for 23 yards and
a touchdown.
Gunderson rushed nine times
for 76 yards and a touchdown.
Levi Geer rushed 12 times for 44
yards and Craig Scott ran the ball
seven times for 39 yards.
Dickenson led the defense with
24 defensive points and a fumble
recovery. Geer ended with 16
points. Eckman had 14 points
along with Casey Evans who also
had
a
fumble
recovery.
Gunderson had 13 points and two
interceptions. Clint Bellamy had
13 points and Scott added 10
points.
The Mustangs dropped to three
and three on the year and two and
