SIX - Heppner Gazette-Tim es, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, July 2 2 ,1 9 9 8 Former Kinzua residents/workers gather for 20th reunion From tho Condon Tim«»-Journal, July 9.199« The 20th annual Kinzua reunion was held Saturday, June 20, at Isobel Edwards Hall in Fossil with approximately 230 former Kinzua employees, their families and friends in attendance. Art Robinson of Pendleton was master of ceremonies for the day. He recognized former employees and community members who lived at Kmzua and worked for Kinzua Pine Mills in the early days-Herschel Goen in the 1920s and Dan Walter, Ed Westrom, Lyle and Helen Ostrander, Herb Wright, and Ethel Bare in the 1930s. Opal Adams Cook was recognized as being the oldest lady and Kenneth Fisk of Soap Lake, WA, was introduced. He was a student at Kinzua Grade School and brought pictures of his school days to share. He enjoyed his first reunion. Raffle winners were Rosa Brehaut of Condon, the cedar chest made by Robert Reid of Heppner; LaVelle Jeliick, a calendar made and donated by Betty Murdock; Florence Roark of Baker City and Dorothy Buell of Pendleton won caps made and donated by John and Midge Geer; Nick Taylor of Portland, a lamp made and donated by Wayne Rollis of Heppner and a T-shirt with a photo of Kinzua mill, donated by Jerry Hollomon, of Heppner. Wayland Hyatt of Sheridan won a book, "This I Remember", written and donated by Nick Taylor of Portland. Lyle Simonds of Salem won a welcome sign made and donated by Brenda Walker of Portland and Jeanne Benson of Hermiston won a shirt donated by Jerry Hollomon. The master of ceremonies also recognized former employees, Dexter Collins of Black Mountain, North Carolina, who came the greatest distance, and Herschel Goen of Marysville, WA, who was the oldest person in attendance and was on one of the earliest Kinzua payrolls. Virginia Sitton of Fossil had the most family members in attendance and Marilyn Garcia of Fossil was recognized as being bom at Kinzua. Each person received a Kinzua Pine Mills mug. The auction was a huge success with donations of Kinzua money by Don and Rose McGrew of Fossil and Pete and Sharon Peterson o f Condon. Wayland and Pat Hyatt donated Kinzua, Condon & Southern Railroad tickets for riding the "Goose”. The lucky bidders were Roberta Conlee and Stephen, Art Robinson, Doug Elder and Jerry Hollomon. Out of town guests attended from Condon, Mitchell, Spray, Beaver Creek, West Linn, Salem, Heppner, Sheridan, Prineville, Klamath Falls, Albany, Grants Pass, Stanfield, Gresham, Portland, Hermiston, Pendleton, Redmond, Estacada, Mt. Vernon, Terrebonne, La Grande, Sandy, Lexington, Westfir, Central Point, Beaverton, Boardman, John Day, Huntington, Baker City, Milton- Freewater, Warm Springs, Woodbum, Keizer, Oakndge, Bend, Tygh Valley, Cave Junction, Hood River and Clackamas. Washington residents came from Washougal, Moses Lake, Centralia, Seattle, Walla Walla, Vancouver, Bonney Lake, Marysville, Newport and Deer Park. California residents came from Shasta Lake, Citrus Heights, Anderson and Palo Cedro; and Idaho residents came from Oldtown and Post Falls. Guests also came from Black Mountain, North Carolina and Lucedale, Mississippi. Loraine and Louie Brooks and Robert Brunner prepared the delicious turkey dinner with all the trimmings with potluck dishes being provided by the guests. Lyn Jensen Craig, Wheeler County's economic development coordinator, presented the proposal for a mural project to celebrate the former townsite of Kinzua. The mural would measure approximately 20 feet by 45 feet and would be painted by a professional mural artist on the side of the Fossil Cafe facing the city's pocket park. The mural will feature a scene from earlier this century at the former company mill town in the background with loggers, mill and railway workers in the foreground. Railroad memorabilia from Condon, Kinzua and Southern Railroad will be awarded to the winner drawn by the Fossil City Council at its October meeting. Other winners will have the likeness of their faces painted on characters in the mural. Fund raising for the mural will continue throughout the summer. Cost o f the mural is estimated at nearly $6,000 and at least half of the cost must come from donations in order to solicit grants for the balance. For additional information, call city hall, 763-2698, or Craig, 763- 2355. Volunteers have given many years to the reunion and several were given a special thanks- Virginia Sitton, Mike Craig, Betty Murdock, Dan Walter, Marilyn and Marvin Mabe, Tom Troxel, Loraine and Louie Brooks, Robert Brunner, Steve and Roberta Conlee, Karen Cossit, Doug and Bettie Elder, Terry Todd, Betty Bell, Rudy Rhodes, Art Robinson, Jim Craig, Marilyn Garcia, Mel Bailey, Vince and Rollene Allen, and many more who make the event a success. "Mark your, calendar for next year," urged the reunion organizers, "for June 19, 1999.” The date will always be the third Sunday.
