Former Kinzua residents/workers
gather for 20th reunion
From tho Condon Tim«»-Journal,
July 9.199«
The 20th annual Kinzua
reunion was held Saturday, June
20, at Isobel Edwards Hall in
Fossil with approximately 230
former Kinzua employees, their
families
and
friends
in
attendance.
Art Robinson of Pendleton was
master of ceremonies for the day.
He recognized former employees
and community members who
lived at Kmzua and worked for
Kinzua Pine Mills in the early
days-Herschel Goen in the 1920s
and Dan Walter, Ed Westrom,
Lyle and Helen Ostrander, Herb
Wright, and Ethel Bare in the
1930s. Opal Adams Cook was
recognized as being the oldest
lady and Kenneth Fisk of Soap
Lake, WA, was introduced. He
was a student at Kinzua Grade
School and brought pictures of
his school days to share. He
enjoyed his first reunion.
Raffle winners were Rosa
Brehaut of Condon, the cedar
chest made by Robert Reid of
Heppner; LaVelle Jeliick, a
calendar made and donated by
Betty Murdock; Florence Roark
of Baker City and Dorothy Buell
of Pendleton won caps made and
donated by John and Midge
Geer; Nick Taylor of Portland, a
lamp made and donated by
Wayne Rollis of Heppner and a
T-shirt with a photo of Kinzua
mill, donated by Jerry Hollomon,
of Heppner. Wayland Hyatt of
Sheridan won a book, "This I
Remember", written and donated
by Nick Taylor of Portland. Lyle
Simonds of Salem won a
welcome sign made and donated
by Brenda Walker of Portland
and Jeanne Benson of Hermiston
won a shirt donated by Jerry
Hollomon.
The master of ceremonies also
recognized former employees,
Dexter Collins
of Black
Mountain, North Carolina, who
came the greatest distance, and
Herschel Goen of Marysville,
WA, who was the oldest person
in attendance and was on one of
the earliest Kinzua payrolls.
Virginia Sitton of Fossil had the
most family members in
attendance and Marilyn Garcia of
Fossil was recognized as being
bom at Kinzua. Each person
received a Kinzua Pine Mills
mug.
The auction was a huge success
with donations of Kinzua money
by Don and Rose McGrew of
Fossil and Pete and Sharon
Peterson o f Condon. Wayland
and Pat Hyatt donated Kinzua,
Condon & Southern Railroad
tickets for riding the "Goose”.
The lucky bidders were Roberta

The mural would
