Nine students from Kim's Tae- kwon-do school in Heppner traveled to Boise, Idaho, March 21, for the 14th annual Idaho State Karate Championships held on the campus of Boise State university. Over 250 competitors from four northwestern states competed in fighting, forms, board breaking and team demonstrations. Local students again did well against their big city opponents, according to Gary Oberg, head instructor and owner of Kim's Tae K won-do. In the heavyweight purple belt fighting division Bill Morns took first and Matt Browning, third, with each drawing a match with a competitor from Missoula, Montana, who stood 6' 8" and weighed in at 300 pounds. Others placing were Jim Raible, second in purple belt middleweight fighting; Til Tullis, second , blue belt junior fighting; and Kim Morris, third, blue belt junior fighting. Tyler Raible and Travis Judd achieved exceptional performances, winning in two divisions. Both placed second in forms, Tyler in purple belt and Travis in white belt. Additionally, Tyler took second in pee wee purple belt fighting while Travis won the white belt heavyweight fighting class. Oberg competed with 35 other Mustangs split with Hermiston By R ic k Paullus The Heppner Mustangs took on Hermiston ’ s JV baseball team on March 24 and lost the first game, 16-12, before winning game two, 12-4. The Mustangs fell behind in game one and never could get the lead. Derek Gunderson went 2-4 to lead the Mustangs at the plate. Bias Elguezabal also went 2-4 with a double. Cory Bennetto also had a double, and Shane Matheny went 2-6 with a double. Tim Dickenson led the Mus tangs to the win in game two, go ing 3-4 with three RBls. Zach Fabian went 3-4 with two RBIs, and Gunderson went 3-4 with a double. Dickenson was also strong on the mound, picking up the vic tory. Local cowgirls, cowboys compete Lexi Matteson, Heppner, was named the all-around cowgirl and Emmett Evans, also Heppner, the all-around cowboy at the McMinnville High School Rodeo held April 4-5. Matteson was first in barrel racing, third in breakaway roping and fifth in pole bending, goat tying and team roping. Evans was third in saddle bronc and calf roping and seventh in team roping with Vic Thompson. Evans’ place in cutting was unavailable at press time. Also at the rodeo Annie Hisler took third in pole bending and fourth in barrel racing; Bnan Knowles was fourth in saddle bronc; and Ryan Matteson was fourth in calf roping and fifth in team roping with Lexi. All are from Heppner. This next weekend, the local cowgirls and cowboys will travel to Eugene black belts and finished second in board breaking. "I am pleased with their hard work and dedication," says Oberg. "Even though we are perceived as a small school from an area most people cannot find on a map, our students are extremely competitive." "1 he trio of Jim Raible, Matt Browning and Bill Morris has been dominating their divisions over the last two years," added Oberg. Classes are held Tuesday and Thursday at the Morrow County Fairgrounds and the public is invited to watch. Children begin at 6 p.m. and adults start at 7 p.m. Don and Eunice McElligott celebrate their 50th anniversary Don and Eunice McElligott were presented with a framed certificate honoring them as they celebrate the Golden Jubilee of their marriage. The presentation was made by Fr. Gerry Condon at the Sunday Mass at St. William's Church in lone. Gallery hours are noon-4 p.m. Tuesday-Fnday and Sunday from 2-6 p.m. Only four paintings or drawings from every school in the area were allowed, said Heppner High School art teacher Kaya McLaren. "I'm really proud o f these students," says McLaren. “I've only been working with them a quarter, so their art work is really a testimony not only to their own talent, but their own interests, focus, and self-motivation as well. People have this idea that St. Patrick's Senior Center Bulletin Board There were 83 present for the senior dinner April 1. Nineteen meals and one frozen meal were home delivered. Members of the First Christian Church served. The Nutrition Site Committee met following the meal. Bingo was played at 1 p.m. Bill Rowell comes from lone every Wednesday to call the bingo numbers. The menu for dinner Apnl 15 is Salisbury steak, mashed potatoes with gravy, green salad, rolls and bread pudding. Members of the Nazarene and Seventh-day Adventist Churches will serve. Bingo will be played at 1 p.m. Blood pressures will be taken before the meal. Twenty-ei£ht people attended the breakfast Friday, April 3, and two breakfasts were home delivered. The menu for breakfast April 10 will be pancakes, sausage, hot and cold cereal, fruit, milk, orange juice and coffee. Pinochle was played two afternoons last week, one table on Tuesday and two Friday. Everyone is welcome to come play on either afternoon. The exercise class led by Velma Wight is held Tuesday and Thursday at 10 a.m. Flossie Watkins is back from spending the winter in the south. She is the Tuesday afternoon volunteer receptionist in the Senior Center office. We are very happy to have her. Tenant Callie Huddleston moved to an assisted living home near her daughter in Ephrata, Washington. The tenants held a farewell party for her. She is greatly missed. We wish her happiness in her . new home. Clark Gerking is busy moving into a second floor apartment here. Welcome Clark. The Bank of Eastern Oregon will be taking portraits at the Senior Center Apnl 30 and May 1. and Matteson earned a position on the Wrangler High School All Star Rodeo Team based on leadership qualities, academic eligibility and athletic achievements, said a NHSRA news release. "We are excited to expand Wrangler's rodeo sponsorship program at the high school level," said Karl Stressman, special events manager for Wrangler Rodeo. "It gives us a tremendous sense o f pride to associate the Wrangler brand with promising young men and women. We're confident each Leaders of the National High School Rodeo Association (NHSRA), the oldest youth rodeo organization in America, have appointed Annie Hisler, and Lexi Matteson, both of Heppner, to the Wrangler High School All Star Rodeo Team, the first-ever corporate-sponsored youth rodeo team. The Wrangler High School All Star Rodeo Team is fashioned after Wrangler's Champion Pro Rodeo Team which includes superstars like Ty Murray, Joe Beaver, Dan Mortensen and hall- of-famer Jim Shoulders. Hisler artistic talent is something you're bom with, but it isn’t. It's something an artist works hard to develop. This kind of hard work deserves recognition. "Aside from being dazzled by their quality of work, another thing I was really impressed by is that each artist's work is vary different from the others, very distinctive," added McLaren.
