Heppner didn't go down easy, however, losing by only one point, 35-36, in the February 27 game at the Pendleton Convention Center. The Mustangs turned in higher numbers in nearly every category, out-rebounding the Tiger-Scots 35-22, shooting 34 percent from the field to Weston- McEwen's 29 percent, and hitting 4-6 free throws (67 percent) compared to 1-5 (20 percent) for the Tiger-Scots. The problem came with the Mustangs tallying up 24 turnovers compared to photo by Joyce Hughes only nine for their opponent. Both teams played tight and tentative for the first quarter, with senior Mindy Binschus scoring six of her eventual team- high 13, to lead the Mustangs to a four-point edge after one. Heppner outscored the opposition 12-11 in the second quarter to increase the margin to five, 20-15, at the half. At one point in the third quarter the Mustangs enjoyed a seven- point lead before the Tiger-Scots dug in their paws and came clawing back. Amber Weatherspoon hit a trey at the end of the third quarter to narrow the Mustang advantage to two, 26-24. The Weston-McEwen rally continued in the fourth quarter as they managed to grab the lead and pull ahead by four, 30-26.
