Yellow starthistle, a time bomb SW C D annual meeting slated The Willow Creek Waterpark has extended their deadline for early-purchase discounts for season tickets. Season pass discounts will be in effect until Apnl 1. Family passes will be $150 until that date; after April 1 they will increase to $160. Individual season passes will be $60 until April 1 and $75 thereafter. "1 encourage people to get them while they are discounted," said waterpark manager Sarah Carlson. The office will be open for ticket purchases Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from noon to 3 p.m. at 6-7 p.m. Carlson said that the waterpark is still taking appointments for use of the indoor spa Fridays through Mondays and some spaces are still available for the evening and afternoon exercise classes. V C- •• * .-.*>* ■ 100% Cotton Heavyweight $29« L The clock is ticking and the figures are staggering considering the current estimates of yellow starthistle in Oregon and the neighboring states, says Dave Pranger, Morrow County Weed Control. Oregon and Washington r-e p o r t approximately 150,000 acres each, Idaho reports 300,000 acres and California reports 10 million acres currently infested with yellow starthistle. In Morrow County there is approximately 2500 acres of yellow starthistle. Since there are about 1.3 million acres in the county, this means that starthistle inhabits less that .2 percent of the county. Figuring just pasture and rangeland into the equation, starthistle still only inhabits .4 In sickness and in health-yes, it's been the funky flu season for many people. It's also a foregone conclusion that if the female head of a household is ill, then someone else in the family is much sicker. How dare mom get sick without having prepared enough frozen meals to tide the family over. Meanwhile everyone assumes that only women are qualified to clean the bathroom or unplug toilets. Regardless of health or queasiness, if you weren't holed up in the bathroom, there was an opportunity for viewers to watch some Olympic moments. Between interviews and expensive commercials there were snatches of competition. Unless you acquired droopy eyelids, those events provided better viewing than soupy soaps or nighttime programs. Watching disasters on downhill ski runs made my aching bones protest. And mogul maneuvers must be the epitome of someone's idea of making molehills on a mountain. The action by skilled athletes excelled over the usual murder and mayhem television shows they call entertainment. Also the Olympics provided a change from news about political shenanigans that range from Whitewatergate to zipper gate. Charisma seems more important than character these days. The average live-by-the rules taxpayer is represented in government by some unscrupulous, power-hungry politicians who would make great Hollywood actors. Their message to younger people appears to be "do as I say" or at least don't get caught. Like having a disgraced family member, the whole scene makes many Americans want to hide their heads in shame. But there's great news for baby boomers and those who are enjoying a second childhood. They will have more time for active misadventures. They've discovered a way to keep human body cells from aging. But it's too late for me as I never could outrun a crippled cat and I didn't plan to start hand-gliding at age 90. This could also help some career politicians to stay in office longer, especially those already needing a cane, who are not in favor of term limits. Undoubtedly lawmakers will get back to arguing over how to spend budget surpluses while the Iraq situation plays out. The cost of military readiness in the Persian Gulf area is mind boggling. But in the meantime, Congress should be appropriating more money for million dollar restrooms, the kind that don't flush, in remote areas. Taxpayer dollars at work. And we ought to be diligent about imposing fines for not complying with a limitation on the amount of water used in toilets. The old 3.5 gallon tank is supposed to be replaced with ones using 1.6 gallons. Even if one has to flush twice, just think of the number of jobs as toilet checkers. Yes, we are fortunate to have toilets that flush unlike some unfortunate victims of storms. Hopefully all those stricken folks won't decide to move to Oregon. However they say there is a national home building boom underway. A requisite to building should be the use of stilts under houses located in floodway or maybe put skids under those houses perched on cliffs and hillsides. Zoning regulations in Oregon appear to be much stricter. So why is it that these ground squirrels now coming out after hibernation don't comprehend our land use plans? "It means that yellow starthistle can still be controlled and in some areas even eradicated," says Pranger. "Fifty years ago we could have said the same thing about diffuse knapweed. That time bomb exploded years ago though and today there are well over 100,000 acres of diffuse knapweed in Morrow County alone." "Since starthistle can be every bit as damaging as knapweed," adds Pranger. "It makes sense that every effort be exhausted now to control and contain starthistle before it blows up." Leprechauns are out and about in various forms, gathering auction items, practicing for the o'hanky planky race, decorating their o'shanty, practicing their best Irish brogue or Irish ditty, and preparing for fine food and festivities. T is thanks to hearty souls that the celebration goes on. It means months of hard work for the likes of Doris Brosnan, Molly Rill, Cara Osmin, Bob Kahl, Judie Laughlin, Gwen Healy, the organizations doing the cooking and entertaining and especially the auction committee. Plan to have lots of fun honoring the Hirl family at the KUMA Coffee hour, participating in the parade and the races, taking your guests into our local businesses, enjoying the Ceili upstairs at the Elks (admission is a collector's button) and sharing reunions with one and all.
