French receives lifetime achievement award Ron Daniels (left) presents Ray French with Lifetime Achievement award. Morrow County Commissioner community is almost too Raymond French was honored by extensive to list. He has been a the Heppner Chamber of member of the St. Patrick Church Commerce at their annual and Holy Name Society, the luncheon meeting Jan. 13. The Heppner Chamber of Commerce, Chamber presented French a American Legion, the Morrow "lifetime achievement award". County Historical Society, the French graduated from Oregon and National Cattlemen's Heppner High School in 1945 Association, the Heppner and then served in the U.S. Navy Coordinating Council, the John during World War II. After the Day/Snake River Advisory war he returned home and Council, a member and trustee of married Norma Denton. He and the Heppner Elk's Lodge, a his wife have three daughters, member of the committee for the Karen, Verina and Susie. The antique machinery museum, past Frenches have lived the past 34 director of the Heppner Rodeo years on the French Ranch Board, past school board Century Farm. member, a member and past French's service to the Teleconference scheduled OSU will offer a teleconference as part of the Columbia Basin Wheat Seminar on Tuesday, January 27, from 8:30 a.m. to noon. The teleconference will focus on plant variety protection and niche marketing. The Morrow County Extension office, 102 S. Main above Coast to Coast in Heppner, will air the broadcast. There will be three opportunities to view the telecast in Morrow County. On January 27, there will be a free uplink at the Extension Office in Heppner and at the Riverside High School Library in Boardman. On January 29 a tape of the teleconference will be shown at the lone Grange starting at 8:30 a.m. Those who have a satellite dish with Ku capability may view the telecast at home. W h e a t Com m ission plans m eeting The Oregon Wheat Commis sion (OWC) will hold a regular meeting on Monday, Feb. 9 at Cousins’ Restaurant in The Dalles at 10 a.m. The research review meeting will be held the next day at 9 a.m. at the same location. The OWC complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act which prohibits discrimination against persons with disabilities. Anyone who would like to par ticipate in these meetings, but who needs special accommoda tions, contact the OWC office 48 hours in advance at (503) 229- 6665 or TDD (503) 986-4762. The commission meeting is open to the public and anyone wishing to attend is invited to do so. BMCC sign language classes offered Beginning Sign Language will be offered in Irrigon beginning Wednesday, Jan. 28. This Blue Mountain Community College (BMCC) class will cover the ba sics of elementary sign language. The course, to be held at Co lumbia Middle School in Irrigon, will run from 6:30-7:30 p.m. on Wednesdays. Cost of the course is $20 and preregistration is re quired. Legion, a u x ilia ry plan m eeting The American Legion and Auxiliary will hold their regular meeting at the United Methodist Church basement on Monday, Jan. 26. A potluck supper will begin at 6:30 p.m. All members are encouraged to attend and help plan the year’s activities. St. Patrick7; Senior Center Bulletin Board There were 65 present for the senior meal Wed., Jan 14, even though the weather was terrible. Fifteen meals were home delivered. Members of the Christian Missionary Fellowship served. The Senior Board met at 1 p.m. in the office. Bingo was played in the dining room from 1 to 3 p.m. The menu for the birthday dinner Jan. 28 will be ham and white beans, coleslaw, jello and cottage cheese, sliced bread and cobbler. This menu was changed from Jan. 21 to Jan. 28. Members of the Episcopal Church will serve. There were 34 present for the Friday breakfast and five home delivered meals. The menu for breakfast Jan. 23 will be egg and muffin, bacon, fruit, hot and cold cereal, orange juice, milk and coffee. One table of pinochle was in play Friday after noon. There was no Sunday movie. Georgina McDaniel has been visiting her mother, Sylvia, for a few weeks. She will be returning to Salem soon. Sylvia gave a birthday party for her Monday evening, Jan. 19, inviting all the other tenants to help celebrate. Tenant Jack Erwin returned from his vacation in Arizona a few days ago. He reports that the weather there was much the same as here, except for our snow. Friends of the Springer family prepared and served dinner at the Senior Center following the funeral services for Violet. The seniors also wish to express their sympathy to the family. Ten volunteers folded 4-H newsletters for the Extension Service Friday, Jan. 16. president of the Morrow County Livestock Growers, 1964 Morrow County Cattleman of the Year, president of the Oregon Cattlemen's Association from 1980-81, chairman of the Heppner Soil and Water Conservation Board, chairman of the Columbia Blue Mountain Resource Conservation and Development, 12 year chairman of the Heppner Soil and Water Conservation Board and nine year director of the Pendleton Production Credit Bank. He was honored by OSU in 1982 for "distinguished service, devotion and loyalty rendered in the livestock industry" and by the Oregon State Police for "leadership, action and cooperation toward their mission of protecting Oregon's people property and natural resources, representing Morrow County". He was elected to the Oregon House of Representatives from 1985-1988 and is currently serving as Morrow County Commissioner. He was elected to that position in 1990 and has elected not to run again when his term expires in 1999. HEDC plans annual meeting Sam Sirkin, deputy director of the Oregon Economic Develop ment Dept. (OEDD) will be ad dressing the Heppner Economic D evelopm ent C orporation (HEDC) at their annual meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 27 at the Hepp ner Elks Club. David Harlen, re gional director for OEDD will also speak. New directions for economic development in Oregon will be discussed, as well as rural development successes. The evening will kick off with wine tasting hosted by Murray Drugs at 6:30 p.m. and a prime rib dinner served at 7 p.m. New officers will be introduced and 1998 HEDC goals will be pre sented.
