lone Library program a success r By 2® Student named to dean's list ■ L 1* Kids work together to build mini-golf course at lone Library program. The lone Public Library's summer program, "Books and Beyond-Hobbies and Interest for Life" was a big success. During the span of the six week program 34 children attended, 140 books were checked out, and children reported reading over 700 books Some of the most popular projects were building a mini- golf course out of recycled materials and game making (both themed after their favorite books) and clay modeling. Michelle Raible, leader of this year's program, said she was very ) pleased with the turn out and enthusiasm of the participants. "The children were always very excited to be there," said Raible. "We also bad several parents and young teens help out. With 19 to 20 busy bodies each session, their help was greatly appreciated." The Tone Topic Club members (supporters of the library) provided snacks for each session. "The first day our theme was collecting," said Raible and Lea Mathieu brought her angel collection and angel-shaped cookies. I thought that was so great and the children really loved it." The program ended with each child attending getting a certificate and prize. Top readers included Mary and Kylie McElligott and Katie West (over 100 books each), Paul and Matt Hams (over 70 books) and Katie Vosberg (60 books). Cannon, whose wife, Gloria, is the daughter of Gene Peterson of Imgon, recently reported for duty at Naval Air Sta- tion North Island, San Diego. The 1990 graduate of East Newton High School of Granby, MO, joined the Navy in June 1991. Garden Club to sponsor flower show All the clubs of District 10 of the Oregon Federation of Garden Clubs from Heppner, Condon, Boardman. Echo, Hermiston, Umatilla and Milton-Freewater are joining in sponsoring a public fall flower and craft, show, "Splendor in September", September 20-21 in Thompson Hall at the Umatilla County Fairgrounds. The show is open to the public to make flower exhibit entries. Celebrating the beauty of autumn, "Splendor in September" will be the first flower show of its size and depth to be presented in eastern Oregon. Chairperson Laura Richardson, Hermiston, and her central committee have planned a show with something for everyone. In addition to a wide range of horticulture and design exhibits, a craft show will feature selected garden and other hand-crafted items. On Saturday, September 20, a lasagna luncheon will be available and on Sunday, Sept. 21, afternoon tea and cookies will be served. Door prizes and a raffle will be held both days. Educational displays will include soil testing information, classification of dahlias, activities of District 10 garden clubs, and controlling puncture vine. Blooming patio pots, dried flowers and potted starter plants will also be for sale. The show will open for public viewing on Saturday, Sept. 20, at 10 a.m. and on Sunday, Sept. 21, at noon., The garden clubs invite all amateur flower growers in this area to exhibit in the show.
