January 29, 1997 Mustangs take Tigers 66-46 Gunderson named to Shrine team Brent Gunderson Jim Schlaich puts in two against Stanfield The Heppner Mustangs found themselves in a “must win” situa tion against the Stanfield Tigers in a home game. Saturday night, Jan. 25. After giving the visitors some false hope, the Mustangs took the Tigers to the woodshed in the sec ond half for a 66-46 win, Heppner’s fourth league victory against three losses. In the first quarter, the Mustangs raced to a 17-3 lead behind the shooting o f Eric Schonbachler. Schonbachler scored eight of his 11 points in the first stanza. Stanfield caught fire and trailed only 21-16 at the half. The Tigers were outscored 20-11 in the third quarter and the Mustangs had a comfortable 41-27 lead going into the fourth quarter. Dave M ichael came o ff the bench for the second night in a row for some good minutes. He poured in all 11 of his points in the last quarter to pace the Mustangs. Senior Justin Matteson led the Mustangs with 16 points. Tim Dick enson had a solid outing with nine points and 12 rebounds. Klint Mills led the Tigers with 12 points. The Mustangs hit the road Fri day night, Jan. 31, traveling to Pi lot Rock to play the Rockets. They return home Saturday, Feb. 1, to host the Sherman County Huskies. Mustang JV girls lose big time to TigerScots bv Molly Rhea_____________ The Heppner JV girls team had a miserable time in Athena on Friday, January 24, losing for the second time to the Weston- McEwcn Tiger-Scots, 56-17. Nothing seemed to go right as the young Mustangs struggled to get past the Tiger-Scots' press and were hardly able to get a shot off. The quarter scoring was bleak with the Mustangs trailing 2-15 at the quarter and 8-29 at the half. The second half Heppner continued to appear lifeless and was unable to effectively move the ball or score The third quarter score was 11-42 and the final tally was a dismal 17-56. Heppner hit only three of 12 freethrow attempts (25 percent), while the Weston-McEwen squad was seven for 10 from behind the line The Mustangs were nicked for a frightening 39 turnovers Kathleen Greenup led the Mustang scorers with five points, two steals and an assist Trisha Adams had four points and three rebounds Macy Rhea had two points and four boards Julie Watkins had two points along with two rebounds Tracy Rankin hit a bucket and grabbed a rebound. Ashley Ropp got credit for one freethrow, three steals and an assist and Leah Denton hit one freethrow while pulling down two rebounds Until this game the JV fans have seen steady improvement from these girls This young Mustang squad will need to put this frustrating game behind them, continue to work hard and have fun IMS Cardinals defeat Fossil Eagles By Jennifer Thompson The lone Middle School Cardi nal boys won a good game against the Fossil Eagles on Saturday, Jan. 18, 51-38. The Cards managed to keep the lead the entire game. The top scorer for lone was eighth grader Cory Bennetto with 15. Brad Burright followed him with 11. Korey Mor gan had 10, while Dustin Hague- wood had seven. Adam McCabe and Jeremy Rietmann each had four; Karl Morgan chipped in three. Gunderson, the son of Dave and Tricia Gunderson, Heppner, was selected as second team all state as both offensive and defensive lineman Brian Koffler, the son of George and Debbie Koffler of Heppner, was named Shrine alternate Mustang girls whip WM TigerScots, 50-41 bv Mollv Rhea The Heppner Mustangs varsity girls team whipped up on the Weston-McEwen Tiger-Scots in* Athena on Friday , January 24, 50- 41. Heppner pressed the entire game and made the win look easy with their "in your face" basketball style Jill Barber set the tempo by canning a three pointer to start the Mustangs' scoring effort Heppner took it to 'em and led 10-2 as the first quarter ended While the Tiger-Scots focused on controlling Lori Moeller, Mindy Binschus alway s seemed to be in the right place at the right time Binschus exploded for 10 points, seven rebounds and two steals to lead the balanced Mustang scoring attack At the end of two, the Mustangs led, 22-17. The final two quarters were more of the same a s . the Mustangs continued pressuring the ball, creating turnovers and generally getting the Tiger-Scots' dander up The Mustangs led 33-26 after three and won the game. 50-41 The game's results again can be traced directly back to the freethrow line The Mustangs went to the charity stripe 29 times and converted 17, for 59 percent Heppner allowed the Tiger-Scots only 16 freethrow attempts and they sunk seven o f those for a lowly 44 percent Moeller was held to five points, but managed to grab nine rebounds and four steals, Casey Ingraham came in to score nine points and nab a steal. Barber hit two treys and two freethrows for eight points, five rebounds and an assist Jaci Hughes hustled her way to seven points, hitting 5/6 at the freethrow line, snagged two rebounds, a steal and dished out three assists. Lexi Matteson had two points, two rebounds, three steals and one assist Annie Hisler popped in five points, cleared one board and ladled out two assists. After being shell shocked on Friday evening by a hot shooting Weston-McEwen team, the young Heppner squad took all of the first quarter and most of the second before even scoring a point. The score at the end of the first eight minutes was 0-12 with the Mustangs hanging their heads The score was 0-18 before the Mustangs finally canned a freethrow' From that point on Trisha Adams managed to supply the spark that ignited Heppner's fire Adams scored eight of her game-high 11 points in the last four minutes of the second quarter She also scooped six boards and four steals.
