TWO - Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, October 30, 1996 Fillies earn second in league Howard set up the powerful front row and helped Mindy Binchus, Lexi Matteson and Annie Hisler earn kills. The Fillies steadily put points on the scoreboard and lead 8- 4, when the Huskies jumped up and bit them, stuffing a Filly serve. At that point a Husky server went behind the service line and scored points 5 through 15. Sherman County won the first game. 15- 8 . Game Two the Fillies racked up a 7-1 lead with kills coming from Traci Dickenson, Lexi Matteson, Stormy Howard, Lori Moeller and Annie Hisler, along, with a block stuff from Mindy Binchus. Then the Huskies took control of the game and scored points two through nine. The fired-up Huskies never looked back and won the second game 15- 11 . Awards were presented upon completion o f all the matches. Earning the CBC All Star Team status for the_ Heppner Tillies were: on the first team, Annie Hisler and Lori Moeller; honorable mention. Stormy Howard and Traci Dickenson. improvement this season. Coach Dana Reid has taken this bunch o f individuals and molded them into a competitive team that knows how to win. This positive group o f young ladies displays teamwork and good sportsmanship win or lose. C-team wraps up season with win The outcome o f game two was never really in question with the Fillies leading from the get-go. In the second game the service line success increased to 88 percent, and the Fillies won easily 15-8. Servers with 100 percent success behind the line for the night included Amy Drake 9/9, Trisha Adams 7/7, Abby Kahl 7/7, Allison Sykes 5/5, Amanda McDaniel 2/2,1 racy Rankin 1/1 and Macy Rhea 1 / 1 . The Heppner C-team has d e m o n s tra te d s te a d y hv Mnllv Rhea__________________ The spunky C-team wrapped up their season with a two game match over the Riverside’s C ’s on Thursday, October 24, 15-13, 15-8. The first game was notable for long rallies with some outstanding net play. The lead swung back and forth as the Filly C 's struggled at the service line with a team service success o f 81 percent. With a good display o f teamwork .the Heppner C’s won 15-13. C orrection The obituary o f Elizabeth Slottee, which appeared in the October 23 Gazette-Times was incorrect. Ms. Slottee was survived by a brother, Chris, not a sister. Lexi Matteson spikes one over the net while Annie Hisler (5) watches. bv Molly R h e a ______________________ Although the Heppner Fillies suffered a letdown on Saturday, Oct. 26, they had a season to look back on with pride. The Fillies put out tremendous effort throughout the season to earn second place with a 10-2 league record going into the district playoffs. Heppner faced a determined Sherman County Husky team in the first match o f the "loser out” district playoffs. Unfortunately, the Fillies were the first team to be eliminated as the Huskies went on to w in both of their matches and earn a berth at the regional playoffs. In Game One the Fillies looked a little skittish but soon settled in to their game plan against the much taller Huskies. The fans were treated to several long rallies and heads up saves. Stormy "These girls have nothing to be ashamed of,” said Coach Terri Gentry. “Although today's outcome was disappointing, I am so proud of this team. The IHS homecoming game was Friday, Oct. 18, against Culver. The court also included senior princess Stephanie Haguewood; junior prince and princess Jake McElligott and Jenny Sullivan; sophomore prince and princess Chris Faught and Katie Tworek; and freshman prince and princess Mark McElligott and Amber Miles.
